The number of company start-ups around Sweden rose significantly in September, up 18 percent in comparison with the same month of last year.

The increase is the first sign of an upward trend for new businesses for more than 12 months. So far this year a continuing downward spiral saw the number of new business start ups sink by 13,5 percent.

Statistics from the Swedish Companies Registration Office (Bolagsverket) show that 5,736 companies were set up in September, in comparison to 4,843 in the corresponding month of last year.

The most active entrepreneurs were to be found in Gävleborg, which saw a rise of 67 percent in the establishment of new companies, followed by Uppsala (37 percent) and Dalarna (34 percent).

Visma Spcs, which provides advice to new business owners, compiled the figures along with Bolagsverket.

”This is a really positive development,” managing director Rolf Dahlberg says.

”But there are still far too few new companies. But with the right support and inspiration, more will want and dare to start their own business."

This is very good news and very encouraging.

As an immmigrant to Sweden, I am laying the groundwork for starting my own company, without any form of goverment support. My plans are short, medium and long term. First stages are already completed

Here in Sweden, the first hurdles to starting a business are the worst. Once a person gets past them, things become clearer.

I have found some very good help here from some Kommune people after some stumbling in the dark. I also got some very good advice from the Skat office and arbetsförmedlingen. They took there time to make an appointment for me to explain some issues regarding self employment, making sure I understood.

Regarding starting a business, my Swedish friends have been invaluable. They have used contacts, organised translations and ensured some smooth running for me.

Compare that with what I had in Northern Ireland. Everyone trying to undermine my idea and goverment agencies who seem to only want people to suceed if they fit into there tick boxes.

New business's don't fit in tick boxes. In Sweden if you don't fit in there tick boxes, you can negotiate and work around it, with patience. Explaining yourself clearly and negotiating will work, if you use your brain.

Sweden is a natural place to do good business, contrary to the rants of some of the commentators here. The country is orientated towards external trade.

There is a lot of talent in Sweden that is encouraged, not discouraged. An obvious and good example is the Swedish music industry in which Sweden punches well above its weight. Other good examples are the bio-medical and high tech engineering industries.

This is VERY good news. This is what will jump start the economy. Hopefully this trend continues in Sweden and globally.

It's not unusual to see more small business start ups during tough economic times. Can't find a job - then try to create one.

Small business is actually the engine of most world economies since small business collectively employs more people than big corporations or government.

From what I've read however, the Swedish tax system isn't the most small business friendly compared to other countries.

@ Greg.

The Swedish tax system can be a headache.

However the Swedish system does have its advantages and its disadvantages, just like every other country. It balances out in the end.

Corporation tax in Sweden is not among the lowest in Europe. It is in the higher middle range bracket.
