Swedish journalist claims Obama Nobel jackpot

While the decision to award US President Barack Obama the Nobel Peace Prize has been received by widespread surprise, one Swedish journalist is toasting the Norwegians after winning 50,000 kronor ($7,177) betting on the outcome.

Peter Lindholm, a journalist working on the free Swedish newspaper Metro, tipped Obama for the prize after reading the line up of artists booked to perform at the gala concert in the Oslo Spektrum arena on December 11th.

"As soon as I saw the artists, a penny dropped," Lindholm told the Resumé newspaper.

The line up, which includes a slew of Obama favourites, and is set to be hosted by close ally Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith, was all that Lindholm needed to write up an article for the paper predicting the US president to emerge as the winner.

The enterprising hack decided to back up his hunch with hard cash and wagered 1,000 kronor on the Nobel committee plumping for Obama, despite the fact that when nominations closed for the prestigious prize the former Illinois senator had only been in office for a number of weeks.

Barack Obama's status as a rank outsider, with names such as Bill Clinton, Afghanistan's Ghazi din Muhammad and Colombian freedom fighter Piedad Córdoba tipped for the prize, was reflected in the odds of 50-1 given to Lindholm.

"50,000 kronor. A pretty good commission," Lindholm said to the newspaper.

While Lindholm enjoys the fruits of his labour, the chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee chairperson Thorbjørn Jagland was left to explain the surprise choice.

"Obama receives the Nobel Peace Prize for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples...The Committee endorses Obama's appeal that 'Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges.'"

Of course, the Nobel Peace prize is, and has been, a joke for many years. This is a political football for Swedes and Norwegians to hand out. So powerless are the Scandnavian nations to bring any change about, they need this artifice to speak. Obama has done absolutely nothing to merit this award in the 7 months he has been President.

After this "win", anyone who receives any Nobel Prize should consider it an insult!

Hmmm? Who says Swedes & Norwegians have no sense of humour, of irony?

I find it hard to understand why Obama got a Nobel Prize. But then, I never could figure out why Al Gore got one.

All the Nobel prizes are nothing more than the Secularist Progressive mirror version of the Catholic Church's anointed Sainthood on those believed to be the most politically correct to promoting and furthering their cause.

In the end, both entities are lame.

2394040, because the world devoured that fat slobs "documentary". Everyone save energy...dont mind my huge, energy hog, New England mansion behind me. Everyone except me needs to start cutting back. It probably doesn't hurt that his environmentalist push made him $100 Million. It was also given to a terrorist, Yasser Arafat. Next up Michael More for his film knocking capitalism. Complaining about how its imposable to make money in a system that has allowed him to make millions. That is where my money is for the next award.

Why are you guys tearing your pants in jealousy. Obama has won the prize. Case close. Accept it or not the guy has made name simple.
03:03 October 11, 2009 by lumia
I don't get it, he got a prize....for making a statement about what (what I consider) America should start doing....while the rest of the world has already put those words into action for the last ten years. I don't get it....and....I don't like it. But what can you do, right?
14:52 October 12, 2009 by Dagem Hailemariam
The Irony is that all of you who are complaining most likely haven't done jack to make any improvements in this world outside of bitching and complaining. If you did then maybe you would encourage what he is trying to do instead of tearing him down.

People now-a-days have become so cynical that they don't even see how they are the problem. For the first time in history sits a president in the white house who is talking about progressive taxing, a universal healthcare system and an understanding of the fact that the USA is not alone in this world and they too must answer to global group conscience! He is attempting to plant seeds that need to be planted and you guys are too small-sighted to see what kind of impact he could have! He is dealing with enough opposition, without you all oppossing him too.

Makes me glad that none of you were sitting on the committee handing out the prize...you would have probably not given it to anyone and conceded defeat to the fear that has gripped this planet for the first 8 years of this decade...why not instead give hopeand faith a chance to work.

Utopia is a fallacy, live in reality and know that there is no perfect solution, just people trying to do the best they can!!!
