Pakistan Swedes arrive home

Published: 11 Oct 09 11:38 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/22586/20091011/

The four Swedes deported from Pakistan arrived at Stockholm Arlanda airport late on Saturday night.

The Swedes - Mehdi Ghezali, who spent two years in Guantánamo Bay following his 2001 arrest in Afghanistan, 28-year-old Munir Awad and 19-year-old Safia Benaouda, and their two and a half-year-old boy, landed at around 10pm.

They group were escorted from the airport by plain clothes police into a waiting car, according to a report in the Svenska Dagbladet newspaper.

"I am sick," confirmed one of the group to the newspaper which reports that all four appeared worn out by their seven week ordeal.

The Swedes have been detained since August 28th when they were arrested in northern Pakistan, along with seven Turks, an Iranian, a Russian, and one Pakistani, according to police reports.

According to Cecilia Julin at the Swedish foreign ministry the four are "coping well under the circumstances" and in response to a question as to why they were released she replied:

"We interpret the situation that the Pakistanis have concluded that there is not sufficient evidence to support putting them on trial."

Pakistan police reported that the group was arrested after being found in a prohibited area near a nuclear power facility.

Police suspect that they were on their way to rendezvous with representatives from the Taliban in southern Waziristan, long considered a Taliban stronghold.

One of the Swedes claimed the group was in fact on its way to a meeting with a Muslim revivalist movement in the city of Lahore.

The Pakistan authorities confirmed early in the week that there remain no suspicions against the group of Swedes with regard to any serious criminal offences.

Cecilia Julin confirmed that the Swedish state has not paid for the group's airline tickets to return to Sweden.

Patrik Peter, a spokesperson for the security police, was unwilling to discuss the details of the case said:

"If they want to talk to us then we would do so willingly."

'Cecilia Julin confirmed that the Swedish state has not paid for the group's airline tickets to return to Sweden'

So much for the swedes crying for their tax money. They'd rather prefer their tax money to be used to make up porn movies than ......!!! no offence intented.

Why Swedes are making this such a big issue even they don't the reality ??? They have never been sure what's being done with these people in Pakistan and still they posted the news.. Don't they have anything else to say.. Seems like the next news will be, the four Swedes deported from Pakistan are sleeping now :)..

Take proper investigation, and let us know the real grounds why they had been arrested.. Not the fake stories..
13:41 October 11, 2009 by sherkovic
and yeah...The Pakistan authorities confirmed early in the week that there remain no suspicions against the group of Swedes with regard to any serious criminal offences.

Thats a spat on people's face who reported that the group was caught with detonators. Remember!! The lies have a really hard tendency to come back and bite in your ass.
18:11 October 11, 2009 by superturbo
Yeah, I'm sure it was just a coincidence that he was captured AGAIN (the 3rd time??) under the same charges... In truth, Sweden should not have any obligations with this Gehzali person since he's an Algerian citizen. But what have the Algerians done for their citizen? Not a damn thing. So much for the muslim affinity, lol.

Oh, and if I had to choose between helping religous extremists (which he indeed is, whether he's a criminal or not) and porn movies, I would definetely choose the porn. Bye.
19:06 October 11, 2009 by boby
Stop harassing these people- they are innocent tourists. Its well known that Afghanistan is a very popular destination with Swedes. Just because the Americans arrested one in Guantanamo means nothing, the place was full of innocent people. Actually its the damn Americans just covering up the fact that Bush blew up the twin towers together with the Jews. Oh, and there are no Muslim terrorists, it is a peaceful, love seeking religion.
19:17 October 11, 2009 by izbz
Agreed with superturbo, it seems these people has got quite use to the saying ' one bitten twice shy, twice bitten never mind.' I have been a tax payer ever since I came to Swedan... no'black money', have refused to work for any employer who wanted to pay me that. So I say let's support porn rather than extremists. Maybe if they are so supportive to their own faith, I think if everyone of them in Swedan were to just donate 1 kronor each, I am sure they can buy a round trip ticket to Swedan and back to Pakistan with 5 star hotel included.

So have a nice trip!!!!!
19:49 October 11, 2009 by sherkovic
@boby; you got it absolutely wrong mate. These people are not innocent at all. They were not tourist because they were traveling with 2 very potential extremist suicide bombers with one just 2 years old and the other only 19 year old mother.

Afghanistan is definitely a very peaceful place with Pakistan, Turkey, Iran, Saudia, Egypt, Syria and other muslims countries invading the place since last 30 years. USA just came to rescue them but it is not absolutely wrong that USA has invaded Afghanistan the truth is that its Pakistan who has invaded Afghanistan and killing innocent people their.

Mehdi Gazali oh yes definitely he is not innocent he first blew himself up in afghanistan and for that reason was kept at guantanamo and 1000 different charges of raper murder and terrorism were filed against him in different courts of law.

It is aboslutely wrong that the group was innocent they were awarded lot of bounty and prizes and were released from pakistan to go back to Sweden and carry on their extremist activity.

Now that they are in sweden again so people like you have to be very careful coz they can come anytime looking....and blow themself up right?

I don't understand why people blame USA, Pakistan or religions for the current problems of Afghanistan. To be fair, major blame goes to Russians who invaded Afghanistan in 1979. Rest of the blame is shared by the group of countries like Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, USA, UK and UAE who trained, equipped and funded the holy worriers to fight the Russians. So please don't twist the facts to fit your own big big theories.

I think most people first make some THEORIES and then try to find the facts to prove them RIGHT. The right way is the opposite i.e. first know the facts and then conclude some thing.

@sherkovic

mate, you dont know what you are talking about. I wont write any historic or pre-historic fairy tale but let me tell you that in 70's Russia invaded Afghanistan..later USA invaded Afghanistan (catch: When Russia invaded Afghanistan, Pakistan only fought war against Russia in Afghanistan, helping poor afghans, never invaded)

And mate, me being a humble scholar of international politics, would also like to tell you that there was no afghani or pakistani involved in 9-11, and still U.S. invaded Afghanistan.

I know this is not a simple subject, but do your research before coming to a discussion forum or writing a comment.

p.s. if you are dependent on main stream media for such information then i must wish you GOOD LUCK :)

@Name, Who Cares

You completely missed out the Sherkovik's point of view. Read the thread from beginning. He never blamed Pakistan or Afghanistan. :). Maybe he was lil sarcastic in reply of boby

@sherkovic

Next you will be denying like the other poster that supported this group that Al queda was responsible for the 9/11 terrorist attack. Or that one of London subway bombers was trained in this area of pakistan by al queda. Or that this woman and her boyfriend were arrested in another terrorist controled area of africa and bailed our previously by the Swedish Government. Is it child abuse to take ( a child to a war zone ) ?

Not all news thinks that they were innocent

So what about these terrorist? Has the stupid Swedish authorities just let them go free to plan their next terror activities? I guess terrorist activities are not the same as cheating on taxes.

Why not rename Sweden EOI..........Emirate of imbecils
18:14 October 12, 2009 by DreEstwd
I'm laying 3 to 1 odds that this guy, Ghelazi or one of his buddies is going to be responsible for the first major terrorist attack in Sweden. God knows that I don't want to see, none of us wish for it. But we all know it's coming. Sucks.
15:14 October 13, 2009 by Heideggers Ghost
I've always had a theory that those attracted to terrorism are criminally minded.

Lo and behold it appears that according to his wiki, Mehdi Ghezali was an accomplished bank robber before directing his "services" for a higher purpose.
15:35 October 13, 2009 by soultraveler3
I hope you're not right DreEstwd.

Sweden will probably get it someday as well. Most countries do. :(
20:41 October 13, 2009 by nevon
Fat chance Sweden will ever be the target of radical Islamists. DreEstwd is having another pathetic go at his fear-mongering, as always. Terrorists are cruel, violent criminals who have no regard for human life, but they're not random. There's pretty much no reason why any terrorist would carry out an attack in Sweden.

The real issue here is whether these people, or similiar people, can use Swedish passports to get into the US or the UK where they have very good reason to carry out attacks. But I'm pretty sure they're all going to be under pretty good surveillance from now on since they tried to join the frikkin Taliban and got caught in the process. Authorities don't just let people "go" under these kinds of circumstances.

Oh in other news, DreEstwd, the most outspoken racist on these forums is not actually Swedish. Yes. He's an immigrant who moved here. He also hates women. He's practically the anti-thesis of an average Swedish person, yet he comes here preaching about what's best for Sweden, usually by whining about how non-Swedes are going to take over the country.

If there was a Nobel prize for irony, DreEstwd would have collect it right after getting his Academy Award for being a racist redneck drama queen.
05:06 October 14, 2009 by Greg in Canada
"There's pretty much no reason why any terrorist would carry out an attack in Sweden."

You're quite naive in my opinion. Never say never. I also remember a time when Swedes claimed that a prime minister could never possibly be assinated in their country. And let's not ignore the fact that Sweden is in Afghanistan which could easily be justification for an extremist terrorist group.
11:16 October 14, 2009 by DreEstwd
Yes, Nevon is VERY naive. No reason to attack Sweden, huh? They have the same reason to attack Sweden as they did Spain and England. Don't think these idiots won't do it here either. It seems like more and more are going to Waziristan lately and if you think that they are going there on vacation (like most of the PC cultists here) then you need your head examined.

As far as your personal attacks on me, Nevon. Wow, it is incredible that you figured out that I am not a native Swede (just like 95% of the people on this forum). Congrats. LOL. Also, trying to label me as a Nazi just because I have different views than you on immigration is a complete and utter reach. From a person who defends child rapists, violent criminals and wannabe terrorists it is also a joke. Why don't you concentrate on the topic rather trying to be my groupie.
