Three million Swedes file share illegally: study

More than one in three Swedes continue to ignore the country’s anti-file sharing laws, according to a new study by a recording industry interest group.

The survey, carried out by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), reveals that 40 percent of Swedes between 15- and 74-years-old actively share music files illegally over the internet on a daily basis, or with less frequency.

The figure is equivalent to 2.8 million people, or nearly one third of Sweden’s population of 9 million people, a figure much higher than suggested by previous studies.

“It’s a very high figure but I’m not surprised,” the head of Ifpi’s Swedish chapter, Ludvig Werner, told the TT news agency.

As the study only asked about Swedes’ file sharing habits for music, rather than film, books, and other types of media, it’s likely that the actual number of Swedish file sharers is substantially higher than the survey suggests.

According to Werner, the figures in the IFPI study likely reveal a higher prevalence of illegal file sharing because it was conducted over the web rather than through fixed telephone lines.

“It means that all of the respondents are familiar with the internet. When you call someone’s home and ask questions, you get a slightly different target group,” he said.

Despite the IFPI survey’s surprisingly high figures, experts don’t believe they are exaggerated.

“It’s about half of all who have broadband connections, and that doesn’t sound unreasonable,” Jens Häger of the Mediavision consulting company, which has also carried out studies to measure the prevalence of file sharing in Sweden, told TT.

74% of statistics are made up on the spot...

and 97.23% of IFPIs statistics cant be trusted

while 86.4% of mine can be trusted without references and

100% of mine with references.

In all seriousness, the IFPI have been known to cook their numbers, and now their next move is for stronger laws (to protect the failed business model) because in their argument the current laws are 'not strong enough' nor provide enough of a deterrence.

Ideally, they would like something like what the RIAA enjoy in the U.S, upto 150,000USD per song 'infringed', so just like the US they can get 1.8million USD (Jammie Thomas) judgements against single mothers and 2million judgements against college kids (Joel Tennenbaum). While if they make a mistake and sue the wrong person, they go scott free, even if they sue the wrong person because he was dead at the time of infringement...its just a boo boo from their side and must be forgiven, no harm done right?

On this story, I'm with eZee - I find this very hard to believe.

The headline from thelocal is equally lame and misleading.

I'd like to be able to say it would be interesting to see the source material for the survey - where was the survey conducted (website, email) , how were they contacting people, how many, integrity of the data pool, etc, etc.

But with figures like these - it leaves me entirely sceptical and disinterested.

On the flip side of the coin, I'm not sure getting such a high figure would really benefit IFPI so much because it can open dialogue that since so many people do it, it can't be wrong be perceived as wrong but its the laws that are problematic.

In the end, to save the good people from all the criminals around (over 2.8 million by the IFPIs count) let's put all non-sharers in jail for their own safety.
