Cell phone owners could face TV licence fees

Swedish TV licensing body Radiotjänst has indicated that cell phone users may soon face licence fees as technological advances bring television to the mobile.

Responding to a query from a concerned citizen, the agency said it would not rule out obliging cell phone users to pay a TV licence fee if public service television providers make all their programmes available for mobile phone viewing.

"All equipment displaying a channel's entire output requires the payment of a television licence," Radiotjänst spokeswoman Anna Pettersson told newspaper Dagens Nyheter.

Pettersson added that mobile phones did not yet fall into this category, as only a selection of the public television network's programmes were currently available for handset viewing.

The agency has previously indicated that computers may become subject to licence fees as television networks continue to broaden their online appeal. Radiotjänst noted at the time that people who had already paid their TV licence fee would not be required to pay a second fee for additional devices.

The licensing bureau also sparked outrage earlier this year when it began collecting fees from companies using surveillance cameras.

Lars Kjellström, the man who inquired about Radiotjänst's cell phone stance, said he felt the current TV licence fee system had become outdated.

"I think there's just one alternative: we pay regular tax instead," he told Dagens Nyheter.

Oh lord...you gots to be kidding me!!! I don't even watch their channels :-S

This is when I start to lose respect for certain parts of the Swedish way of doing things!! Gotta love the diversity in this country though...on one side you got the pirates and on the other the anally retentive. Good luck trying to get me to pay though!! Even if you are from the Radiotjänst and you are reading this, seriously good luck...I ain't paying sh*t :-D

Send me a TV license fee "faktura" because i have a cell phone capable of receiving those signals and I will ask you to come and collect in person... when you do show up please dont wear a helmet because i want to clearly see the expression on your face when you see my throwing arm...and a second later feel my cellphone bouncing off your head.

OI !!! we the consumer didn't ask you to bring TV to mobil or computer, you chose to do that without asking us first. Please take your Tv program off our cell phone and computer. Anyway I got better things to do with my computer and mobil than watching any dumb TV program.

This is why I have a mobile phone that The Trendy And Beautiful People laughingly call a "brick". My phone makes and takes calls and sms messages. It can take pics too but I have a digital camera for that. No licence fee required.

It is utter insanity making you pay a fee for a product you don't use - state tv and radio is the audio/visual equivalent of a prozac drip. Commercial tv gets its funding from (waaaaaaaaytoomuch) advertising - no licence fee required.

In this day and age surely it should be possible for my satellite provider to block SVT1 and SVT2 and the SR radio stations (I almost feel asleep even typing that!) from my box - but of course the state has a vested interest in screwing us for a licence fee!

Make the channels interesting and it justifies the cost - otherwise why should we who watch/listen to commercial/independent tv&radio pay for a service we don't use? Simple answer - tax.

What is the logical explanation of this tax? Then remove all the commercials from the TV, too...

If you already have a television, you will be paying Radiotjänst, no? I pay it for my household, not per device. It's not like 2 TV's = 2 x fees.

The proper story is probably closer to Radiotjänst saying, if you have a device capable of receiving television, then you will pay the fee.

Where is the news in this? So I can only assume that this article is misleading and factually anorexic.

If that's not the case - perhaps thelocal will do a full write-up explaining, like a real bunch of journalists (like those journalists, who win prizes) - I won't be holding my breath though...
