'Who am I?' - Mystery foreigner pleads for help

A man who woke up in a Malmö hospital bed four weeks ago without any recollection of who he is or how he got there has turned to the Swedish public for help in determining his identity.

“Who am I? Please, has anyone seen me before?” pleads the man in an interview set to air on TV3’s Efterlyst (‘Wanted’) television programme on Wednesday.

The man, who refers to himself as Sami Hussein, currently lives in a hotel located in Arlöv outside of Malmö in southern Sweden often used by the Swedish Migration Board (Migrationsverket).

He speaks English well, but has no recollection of where he came from or how he came to Sweden.

“I don’t remember anything about my family, but there must be siblings, cousins, and all the rest, right? I can’t be alone in the world,” he told the Expressen newspaper.

“Sami” was found four weeks ago outside the Malmö police station, at which point he was taken to hospital for treatment of a mild stroke.

His first memory is waking up in the hospital bed.

Sami thinks he was born on March 3rd, 1949, but there is no record of anyone matching his description in either the police’s or Migration Board’s databases.

When he was found, Sami was wearing a black and white shirt and a dark red jacket.

While the last several weeks have been difficult for him, Sami is generally pleased with his time in Sweden so far – at least what he remembers of it.

“Everyone here in Sweden has been great! So helpful and friendly,” he told the newspaper.

“And it’s a very clean country.”

Sami hopes that someone will recognize him following his appearance on Efterlyst, which airs on Wednesday night at 9pm.

But until then, he is left to exercise his creativity when people ask him where he comes from.

“Sometimes I say that I come from Mars, or that I’m the man on the moon. Sometimes I say, ‘Where I come from is top secret’,” he told Expressen.

Poor guy realy hope he finds his past
11:26 October 14, 2009 by sherkovic
IT is strange that though he forgot everything, he still remember his name and he still remember how to speak good english. hmmm...
11:40 October 14, 2009 by Dr. Dillner
Sherkovic, transient global amnesia is a well-described medical and clinical phenomenon and is more than likely what he suffers from. His memory may slowly return in time.
11:59 October 14, 2009 by sherkovic
thanks Dr. for the medical explanation!
12:24 October 14, 2009 by Jenta
Sherkovic, don't be an idiot. You come out with your bizarre, unfounded suggestion that he's faking, and then when it's pointed out to you that this is indeed plausible you get all sarcastic. Stop trolling.

Well wishes to Sami

Jenta...Experience is the best teacher Jenta. Sherkovic( a name which by the way indicates he is not a native Swede and might have ended up here through one of the God knows how many means that are there- dubious or otherwise) knows why he takes that position and I totally understand his point

This seems to be yet another scam in getting your visa application approved. I could be wrong of course, but it is easy to be cynical. In the meantime he is a warden of the State, at the Swedish tax payers' expense. Will be interesting to follow this case to see if relatives already here are suddenly popping up.
13:23 October 14, 2009 by pcs
Lighten up people, he looks like and could be Eugene Terre' Blanches' brother for all we know. Apparently, Afrikanerweerstandsbeweging (AWB) has very good links here in not so liberal Sweden!

He doesn't remember his name it seems its just what he calls himself thats at least what I read in the article.

"

"Sometimes I say that I come from Mars, or that I'm the man on the moon. Sometimes I say, 'Where I come from is top secret'," he told Expressen."

Those which people who talk about tax payers' money..

Don't miss the point. Sweden receives lots of money from the United Nations for each person applies for asylum as long as he/she still in the refugee's status.

Second, what is this hypocrisy?

u people are all the time talking about human rights and lablab, but on the other hand, u don't welcome people...O.K, u have a right to not welcome people, but then don't talk about human rights because then it smells fishy!

I thought people will talk about caring and treatment!
21:48 October 14, 2009 by Osokin
wow these refugees are getting crafty ...

Sweden receives money from the UN??

According to this document from the migrationsverket not:

http://www.migrationsverket.se/infomaterial/asyl/sokande/kvot1_en.pdf

It's taxpayer money as far as I can tell.

Don't know whether to feel sorry for the guy or suspicious of him...

If he's for real I hope someone recognizes him.
09:26 October 15, 2009 by thelionking
Be careful how you treat people dear people. You just NEVER know when you are dealing with an angel.

Fellow has had a stroke! And some views here are sickeningly an attack on a ill man. Who afterall was found outside a police station!!...the very opposite of a criminal master mind.

Perhaps I am more sensitive than the rest of you, but a sick guy turns up on your door step...in this case a police station. It could have been the home of a Roman general of yester year.

All the same the biblical parallels are difficult to ignore.

So by all means -

Taunt him.

Imprison him.

Spit on him.

Throw stones at him as if he was an animal.

If some views here, are reflected in the authorities dealing with him's views, then Mr Hussein really is screwed... Paradoxically we as the community that was sent this "test" fail the test and we are the ones that really are screwed.

God bless you Mr Hussein, speedy recovery.

Good post thelionking!

I agree with you
14:27 October 15, 2009 by sherkovic
@Jenta; I asked a scientifically logical question to which a gentleman replied and I appreciated with a Thanks....Who fingured you that you started calling at me??

It is people like you who read somethingelse...interprete something totally else...say something totally else and in the end result in preaching hate and ignorance.

Stop being bitchy and mind your own business now...LOSER!!

16:34 October 15, 2009 by SWB2009
The article says he speaks English well. It doesn't not say anything about his accent, or if it sounded as though English might not be his mother tongue. A good linguist could tell where this guy is from, within a 500 square mile radius anywhere in the world! Then it would just be a simple matter of local media doing a blitz of "do you know this man" stories. If He is an American and his fingerprints are not in IAFIS, and his DNA is not in CODIS, then he may be an ET!
16:48 October 15, 2009 by David S
Good grief, didn't you skeptics read the part where he'd had a *stroke*

Good luck faking a stroke when you're getting a brain scan, I'd like to see that.
17:31 October 15, 2009 by HejHej
But he says " Sweden is v clean country", so it means he knows what is DIRTY..........
17:42 October 15, 2009 by sherkovic
@hej hej; or in other words he remembers that he comes from a less cleaner or a dirty place....so...
11:58 October 16, 2009 by dutchie104
Being a Dutchman myself, I think he sounds more like an 'Afrikaans' speaking South-African. 'Afrikaans' is a Dutch-related language spoken by South-Africans from Dutch or Flemish origin.
12:19 October 16, 2009 by Frisian
This man is isn't Dutch. He doesn't have that typical Dutch accent when he speaks in English. He also doesn't look like a Dutch/Belgian citizen.
14:11 October 16, 2009 by Michael84
how about if i say the whole story reminds me of "who am i?" by Jackie Chan just as a joke!
15:19 October 16, 2009 by Bjerck
This man's English doesn't sound Dutch to me either. I'm a dutchman who speaks English, Swedish, some German and of course Dutch. (And I teach both Dutch and English) His accent tends more towards a German accent from what I hear. By the way, how is it possible to be able to speak a second language with a foreign accent and to have completely lost your mother tongue?
10:55 October 17, 2009 by Ayesha07
His mentioning the name Sami Hussein, whether this is his true name or not, to me sounds like his heritage is from a culture where this is a common name. I also feel he is from a muslim community as to me this is more of a muslim name, my guess is Shiia, not Sunny muslim. A person non familiar with this type of names as per my believes, would not as first choice mention this name, but something more international or swedish or any other name but Sami Hussein.

I am not 100% sure about this: but, I think, I know, who that man is. About a month ago, I met a couple at the camping site in Söderfors, as I was out for a walk. There were not many campers there, because it was so late in the season; the day was quite chilly, I recall. The couple, with whom I spoke, claimed to be from the Netherlands, in fact! I even remember from exactly where in the Netherlands, because I have been there many times: Alkmaar, the man told me!!!

I told him and his wife, how much I love Alkmaar; after they said, where they are form! I am fairly certain, he is that man! (I can't be 100% certain, of course.)
11:11 October 19, 2009 by krishnochura
Hey, reading about him and seeing his picture, posture, etc.. I assume/guess I could recognize his country....

1. Probably from India or Bangladesh. (looks like and posture, speaks good English, UK style)

2. Immigrant to Belgium (Speaks germanic tone, flammis)

3. Then moved to Sweden (also said clean country... means from... )

could some one please send me a link to the video about him? So that I can try an educated contribution..please?
11:28 October 19, 2009 by PrinceKnight
KRISHNOCHURA ^^^^^If you would like to be educated, read the post before yours!

This man IS from Alkmaar, Netherlands. He came with his wife on vacation, having visited Söderfors in his caravan.

I have positively identified the man (with 99% certainy).
