Sales figures for Saab Automobile continue to disappoint, dipping 61.7 percent in September compared with the year before. Meanwhile, Volvo’s car sales jumped 8.1 percent.

In September, Saab sold only 2,246 cars to customers in Europe, roughly a tenth of the 22,776 cars sold by Volvo during the month.

However, the composite 2009 figures for sales through September are somewhat less encouraging for Volvo, with sales down 17.7 percent overall compared to the same nine-month period in 2008.

Overall, there were 145,174 cars sold in Europe between January and September 2009, a 6.6 percent decrease from the year before, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).

In September, sales numbers were up 6.3 percent across Europe, but down 15.5 percent in Sweden.

From the start of the year, car sales in Sweden are down 22.7 percent.

According to ACEA, the summer’s spike in car sales was due primarily to generous premiums which encouraged car owners to scrap older cars in favour of new ones.

Statistics from several countries in Europe indicate that the upswing in sales which started over the summer has continued into early autumn

Saab sales have tanked in part because customers don't believe the company will be around. Who can blame them? An financially lightweight buyer has wounded a previously weak Saab, maybe mortally. The government drags its feet because of the Buyer's finances and small reputation. Get rid of Koenigsegg before it's too late and the place is closed.

The government dragging its feet because its a left wing socialist entity.

Koenigsegg is the right solution to bring SAAB back to being a premium technically advanced car manufacturer again.

If SAAB can be allowed to build the right cars then people will buy them.

The government prevarication is what will sink the deal not Koenigsegg.

Sigh.. Omg..

The RIGHT wing party is dragging its feet because it is right wing; if the social democrats were in power Saab would have gotten financial support from the government and then they wouldn't be in this mess.

Our left wing isn't socialistic and our right wing, which you claim is socialistic, most certainly isn't socialistic. There has never been a socialistic or communistic country. Go back home yankee. Helt jävla otroligt. And please stop watching fox news, it's poison for the mind.

Sales may be effected somewhat by the question mark over the current or future outlook for SAAB, but for most people across Europe who don't keep an eye on Swedish news and will not know or care who own SAAB, their decision to not buy a SAAB could be that the two main models that they sell, the 9-3 and the 9-5, are badly out dated and are a weak chalange to the newer offerings that are on the market from Volvo, VW, or BMW.

The current 9-3 has been about for the last 7 years, and the 9-5 for over 12 years, most of their competing brands are working on a 7 year cycle, the first 4 years the car is as released and then given a face lift to see it through the last 3 years of its life. SAAB have done that, but they are doing it to cars which are just too old now, there is only so much that they can do with a face lift.

As for Koenigsegg buying out SAAB, well GM where going to get rid of SAAB to the highest bidder, and if the Koenigsegg bid was not excipted then there was a good chance that some of the Chineese companies would have steped in, and as with the buy out of MG Rover in the UK, once it was bought over the UK production line was closed and everything moved to China for cost reasons.

So while a lot of people may not like the Koenigsegg take over of SAAB, it could be the better of two evils. So I say for now we should wait to see if he makes a mess of things before we condem him.

I for one am looking forward to the 9-5 replacement due in 2010, even if it is an ecco of the GM era, at least it will be a new SAAB that can compete with the other manafatures.
