Surfing the web in search of sexual content is one of the ten fastest growing internet activities in Sweden – especially among women, a new study shows.

According to a survey by the Sweden-based World Internet Institute, nearly one in five Swedish web surfers – 17 percent – has gone online to visit sites with sexual content.

“It’s actually not that surprising that surfing the web for sex is increasing. Attitudes toward sex in society play a role in how honest people are, as does internet use overall – more and more services are carried out online these days,” World Internet Institute CEO Janne Elvelid told the TT news agency.

Since 2003, the percentage of Swedish internet users who have gone online to visit sex sites has increased nearly six-fold.

On the other hand, the percentage of Swedes who report visiting sexually-themed websites on a regular basis has remained steady at around 4 percent.

Not surprisingly, men under the age of 25 were found to surf the net for sex most often, with nearly one third of respondents reporting they had visited websites with sexual content. The corresponding figure for young women is only 4 percent.

Nevertheless, the study does reveal that there has been a massive increase in the number of Swedish women who admit to logging on to look for sexual content.

“Women and men have become more comparable in their internet usage,” said Elvelid.

From an international perspective, however, Swedes aren’t as hungry for sexual content as web surfers from other countries.

According to the World Internet Institute figures from 2007, only 11 percent of Swedes said they visited sexually-themed websites, the lowest percentage of all countries included in the comparison.

Figures for the UK, on the other hand, showed that 14 percent of British internet users looked for sexual material, while 29 percent of web surfers in the United States reported visiting sex sites.

The top spot went to the Czech Republic, however, where 40 percent of respondents said they surfed the web fin search of sex websites.

The survey results come from responses from 2,000 telephone interviews in which respondents were asked, “How often, if ever, do you use the internet to look at sexual material?”

Now at the risk of being called 'very dusty and old fashioned' I can't help wondering where romance and true love have disappeared to.

Mechanical and tech. sex may be ok for the moment but at the end of the session that craving for love from the heart and great intimate cohabitation is not satisfied.

Male or female we all need to be needed and wanted and 'plastic sex' cannot fill the void. ( sad )

I agree with vladd777, its pretty pathetic, when will people realise? though its just a statistic.

"'plastic sex' cannot fill the void."

Hmmmm, i am not totally sure about that.... so will continue to fill the void with plastic and see what happens :D

@Argentox,

I'll like you! When i want to watch sex i peep into your mirror...

oh, by the way, you keep banging very unattractive women, please get some attractive ones or i will have to find another mirror.

"nearly one in five Swedish web surfers - 17 percent" That's strangely rounded, much closer to one in six.

More statistics: http://internet-filter-review.toptenreviews.com/internet-pornography-statistics.html porn makes up 12% of total websites!

Not surprising at all. With all the descendants of Thor turning soft, breast feeding, greesing up and slicking back the rug; no wonder their women are out surfing trying to find a little libido action. ;-)
20:52 October 21, 2009 by loddfafnir
17% of those surveyed admitted to visiting sites with sexual content

... and 83% lied!
21:21 October 21, 2009 by ppk
There is more and more veiled women, so what can they do else than... surf the Net?

@ peropaco, "their women" means that yours must be a veiled one :-)

"only 11 percent of Swedes said they visited sexually-themed websites"

This is a pretty accurate hipocrisy meter for a society. Well done Sweden.
22:41 October 21, 2009 by wxman
Just an observation from the "real world". The young lady in the photo has never, and never will, surf the Net for sex. She quite simply doesn't have too.
00:47 October 22, 2009 by creeper
I didn't even have to visit a "sex themed" website today thanks to her. Thanks Local!
02:17 October 22, 2009 by Monty Clift
It's obvious that the Swedish women are looking for a real man, something they cannot find within their own country. Swedish men do not understand the female mind. All this craziness in Sweden regarding sex roles etc. is simply a test that all females worldwide use to test how much bullshit a man will tolerate from them. I'm afraid that Swedish men have failed the female bullshit test so now the girls will look for the Alpha men that they really want elsewhere.

Interesting figures.
09:19 October 22, 2009 by crunchy2k
yes,,,,Swedish woman have and make interesting figures. And the story below the headline was about what?
09:31 October 22, 2009 by Deema
Seriously, People!!

Surfing the net for sex has NOTHING to do with how manly your man is or how desperate the woman are, or how often do you get laid!!

it is so naive to assume that...

it's a normal behavior resulting from curiosity, availability, level of arousal and opportunity!

Even extremely beautiful girls who can get any man they want - like my self ;) - will surf the net sometimes.. (and sometimes regularly. ask the girl in the pic!)

So let's all stop lying, and contribute to teach Swedish woman that it's okay to admit it.

Now, repeat after me: "I am not ashamed of surfing sex-themed-websites!"
09:45 October 22, 2009 by Dick Swinger
Now now ladies, theres no need to be squinting at a poor quality reproductions. If you'rer interested in spectator sports then just ask! I assure you there are equally as many people that like to be watched some even have a chaise lounge intalled in the bedroom, scotch sprayed, and protected by a cheap blanket. To help everyone find one another, maybe the local can turn its Tshirt making enterprise towards a complimentary set of garments with "showtime 11:00pm arrive early to arrange for audience participation" or "want to see me in action? come back when I'm busy" and "watching you is easy coz you're beautiful" or "I am almost the one in five, can I come home with you if you're busy tonight? "

Yours

Dick

My lovely, self proclaimed very satisfied brunette was wondering out loud when I told her of this story as to whether or not the cause for Swedish women searching the web for sex was due to the contemporaneously presented story in 'The Local' ... "Church of Sweden says yes to gay marriage?"
14:43 October 23, 2009 by bocaraton
i wonder how different the response would be looking at google search terms in sweden vs. asking people on the phone? or an anonymous web based survey,

i am sure a few more might do it, than those that admit to it to a stranger over the phone...
20:50 October 23, 2009 by Rebel
Wonder if Swedish women surfing porn prefer American males (and females) or do they try to seek out Swedish men and women?
08:51 October 24, 2009 by Uncle
yourface - what the hell are you injecting? Why is there a computer in the homeless house and how is your racist views, learned from your alcoholic father back in Uzbekistan, are related to the topic?

The survey question is way too general. "Sex" could range from glossy Hollywood press photos of wild celebrities to online naked people to potential dates to just plain weirdness. The results are useless and don't explain anything. To then build an article around this trivial arithmetic is not a good use of The Local's resources, nor its readers'.
