Czechs praise Swedish input on Lisbon treaty

Sweden was lauded on Friday by the Czech President Vaclav Klaus for framing

a solution to his demands for an opt-out from the bloc's Lisbon Treaty.

"President Vaclav Klaus received a proposal from the Swedish EU presidency, in response to his request relating to the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty in the Czech Republic," his office said in a statement, without elaborating.

Sweden has been working to ease the concerns of the Czech Republic and Vaclav Klaus, who is the last EU leader holding out on signing the treaty, which aims to streamline decision-making in the 27-member EU.

"This proposal corresponds to the president's expectations and he can continue to work with it," his office said.

The bloc has nearly doubled in size in the past five years as a swathe of former communist countries such as the Czech Republic have joined.

On Wednesday Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt - who has been instrumental in the negotiations to overcome Klaus's objections to the treaty as it stands - said
the EU was working on a new way to settle the issue.

"I feel confident that if we have this (opt-out) in place we will have a Czech ratification after that," Reinfeldt said, adding that he expected the issue to be discussed at an EU summit in Brussels on Thursday.

Eurosceptic Klaus has a record of throwing up new hurdles to the treaty, which must be approved by all EU member states to enter into force.

Earlier this month he angered EU partners by demanding an opt-out to make sure that ethnic Germans forced out of the country after World War II in punishment for alleged wartime collaboration with the occupying Nazis cannot claim their property back.

A Czech opt-out would not be the first time such a solution has been granted with both Britain and Poland also having won similar exemptions in their own areas of concern.

Last week, Klaus suggested he would ultimately sign.

In any case, he cannot sign the treaty now as the Czech Constitutional Court banned him from ratification pending its verdict on the treaty's compliance with the constitution, expected on Tuesday.

The case was brought to the court by a group of pro-Klaus lawmakers.

Hopefully the Swedish can get the Czech president to sign this week.

The sooner this is ratified the better for everyone in Europe.

The EU bureaucrats would never allow the Lisbon treaty to be put up for another round of voting. Surely some nations that barely passed it would could likely vote against it. Just like it was re-presented to the Irish continually until they voted "right". This recession proved just the medicine for those misguided Irish to vote "right". It is sad that the EU is taking advantage of the recession to push the Lisbon Treaty through.

LT is just for those who are rulling - EU is becoming something similar to medieval monarchies ... When N. Sarkozy says that Germany and UK are the only one with whom he is going to deal about EU questions, and N. Sarkozy´s 23 years old son Jean is going to rule the most powerful quarter in Paris, and if this may be the way the EU is going to be ruled ... then I am against as much as possible.

Reinfeldt and Sweden are demonstrating some impressive leadership here. Speaking as a way-outside-of-the-circle US observer, I hope this kind of negotiation can continue during the UN Copenhagen Climate Summit where the EU will be able to influence us here in the US to sign the Kyoto Protocol. We in the US really can take some clues from the way the EU gets things done...have you looked at our ineptitude on health care reform lately?

I do not know where the above person is getting their information, but The Copenhagen Treaty is going to be disasterous for the US, if signed. Also, many countries that have joined the EU (NWO) regret it immensely. Reinfeldt and his party have altered the entire country of Sweden, and all that has once made it so special will be gone with its loss of sovereignty, and the very same with the US. The Kyoto Protocol and climate change are what the elite bankers have devised to charge the people with carbon tax for their own profits to pay for their New World Order. Carbon is good for the earth. Global warming is a scam. The earth is in a cooling cycle. When will people stop believing everything they are told? Reinfeldt has managed to sell himself the the youth, but they not the most knowledgeable when it comes to things like Hitler's Germany, and the massive loss of freedoms the the "coming" New World Order will bring.

We can argue about global warming until the cows come home and no one will be satisfied. Back in the 70s, the thing was global cooling. You just can't make anyone happy with all the contradictions. Personally, I would say that we are dealing with another round of climate change, which has happened as long as the earth has existed. At the same time, I would argue that anything we could do to reduce pollution in all its forms would be a good idea, but there is no quick fix.

As for the New World Order, that is a reality for the future as things now stand. A one world economic and political union has long been the dream of idealists. Unfortunately, it will be ruled by the same type of power-mad fools who currently rule the world anyway.

When all is said and done, they will accomplish the destruction of the world as we know it. How? Because of their greed, dishonesty, and lust for power.

2394040 - among scientists, back in the 70s the "thing" wasn't global cooling. A handful of people made some predictions, it made the cover of time, the great majority of climate scientists didn't agree. Even then the majority of climate scientists were beginning to be concerned about warming, not cooling.
