A prisoner serving time in Gävle jail has received a pay out of 18,300 kronor ($2,700) in compensation, after injuring his little finger during a game of table tennis.

The incident happened in November 2007 when the 46-year-old inmate whacked the little finger of his right hand on the edge of the table, according to local newspaper Arbetarbladet.

For the next ten weeks he was forced to wear a plastic splint to support the finger which was tender and swollen.

The prisoner made a personal injury claim over the matter.

The Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency (Kammarkollegiet) took the opinion of doctors and photographic evidence into consideration before making the decision.

They concluded that he suffered pain, injury and scarring and was therefore rightfully awarded financial compensation.

Swedes are cynical. And that's fine...

It's not just Sweden. This crazy stuff happens in the US too. i.e. burglar sues for damages and wins after hurting himself while breaking and entering someone's home.

everyone agrees the judges in the west have gotten out of control .. this is insane !! but the same or worse is happening in California and UK ..
11:09 October 25, 2009 by ropegun247
I wonder if in Folsom prison California you would get injury compensation when a jail mate knocks your teeth out so you can't bite???

Sweden... ridiculous system...

@ropegun247

funny by following both systems .. admittedly Sweden less often ( 3 months a year but now year round with the local's help ) i see some of positives and negatives of both. As much as people malign the Swedish sentencing and prison system. I don't think California is a good example.

UK courts are the same. Ireland is getting as bad. In the US everyone is litigation crazy.

Back in Belfast when I worked in a bar, some idiots used to sit drinking at the bar working out ways to get in compemsation claims against the government.

Ever notice that a lot of people who deserve compensation don't get any.

Sweden has a long way to go before it gets as bad as USA, UK or Ireland, although is starting to get as bad.

Quickest and easiest way is to have some sensible people birch the criminals, lawyers and judges until they agree to accept their actions are not reasonable or conducive to their actions.

Accountability is the keyword here.

I'll start the ball rolling and will gladly volunteer to thrash some sense into these idiots.

Please do not apply for the post because I really want the job.. Oh yeahh..

Interesting that people on here talk about courts, lawyers and judges when neither of those had anything to do with this article...

Kammarkollegiet is not a part of the justice system, it is an authority that acts as insurance company for government employees, and apparently also prisoners...
