Prison closures needed to keep authority afloat

An overhaul of Swedish prisons will see 14 institutions affected by closures and cutbacks as the appointed authority is forced to juggle figures in line with its budget for 2010.

The Swedish Prison and Probation Service (Kriminalvården) will make an official decision in November over the fate of prisons and criminal institutions across the country.

Ahead of the announcement, an article in Dagens Nyheter newspaper specifies 14 prisons which will be affected and reports the loss of 850 prison places and 630 jobs in the reorganisation.

Prisons will be close in in Östersund, Härnösand, Uppsala, Norrköping, Uddevalla, Ängelholm, Karlskrona and Trelleborg. Criminal institutions affected in the reorganisation include Viskan, Johannesberg and Mariestad.

In recent years Kriminalvården has concentrated on the development of three prisons at Kumla, Hall and Saltvik, all of which will be completed by the end of the year.

But the project has proved costly and the authority’s 7.3 billion kronor budget for 2010 is not enough to keep these and existing prisons running.

Lars Nylén, director-general of Kriminalvården, told DN that further expansion projects have been put on hold and the government has told the authority to solve the situation.

”We were already planning for closures but now we are in a position where we are forced to shut them down,” he said.

A number of institutions to be closed are 19th century buildings considered to be old-fashioned in today’s modern prison service.

Many of the prisons set to shut shared facilities with police stations that have since relocated.

Well, if they would deport these people straight away then we wouldn't have this problem, would we?

This is an outright disaster, and liberalism run amok. Sweden needs more prisons, not fewer. Every decent Swede should see to it that the responsible politicians get voted out of office in 2010. In the interest of preserving a decent Swedish society, cut back on the bloated social services budget and build more prisons!

Does anyone know how this works here in Sweden? I mean, what do prisoners do all day? Does the state support them to sit around and watch TV or do they work?

I believe there is always a way: move some industries to the prisons, put these people to work. They can earn a small wage so they have some savings when their term is finished and also generate profit to support the system they have been depending on.

We haven't heard from DreEstwd for some time because there wasn't the option to comment on his sole topic of immigrants.

So now he's found a topic to comment on and as usual he just spouts crap..

As usual he is wrong. There is no correlation between closing prisons and immigration.

I think DreEstwd should take a warning to stop spouting so much crap from his boss being reported for hate crime

@RickMethven: I notice you're one of those who does not tolerate, and prefers to silence, diverging opinions, and are therefore probably on the left wing of the political spectrum. By issuing your "warning", you've revealed your true colors. Somewhere between the Sahliness and Ohly. While I do not always agree with DreEstwd, he has the right to express his views. You will gain more respect by arguing fact instead of shrieking pre-programmed leftist political invective.

You show your true colors with the usual fascist diatribe
16:06 October 26, 2009 by Beynch
@RickMethven: Ha ha. You hard-wired marxists are so predictable. Where in my above commentary do I portray a "fascist diatribe" that offends you? - I rest my case.
16:54 October 26, 2009 by DreEstwd
Rick Meth- As usual, you offer a lot of childish name-calling and anti-free speech rhetoric but are well-short on the facts. As of 2005, 30% of the inmates in Swedish prisons were foreign nationals. If anyone has updated statistics, I bet that would be more now. Normally, Sweden waits until an inmate has completed their sentence before deporting them. Actually, only 1/5th of them have deportation orders but it definitely should be more. (http://www.quaker.org/qcea/prison/Country%20Reports/Sweden%20Report%20-%20Final.pdf) (scroll to page 10) If Sweden was to deport these criminals prior to serving their sentence, they could definitely afford to keep the prisons they have and most likely, add more. It's simple math, Rick and Texas Russo. But you guys are more concerned with preserving and protecting the Arabic culture here in Sweden that you are willing to overlook FACTS such as these. Btw, you guys should seriously consider replacing your WAY over-satiated cries of 'nazi,' 'racist,' and 'bigot,' with some actual facts to support your contentions. Otherwise, you make yourselves sound like 5 year olds.

all prisons should be closed, people just become worst there. beside it, prisoners are exploited and when they go out from prison, again they will attack someone for money (me, or anyone on the street will be victim). so, prisoners should get equal money as workers outside, and the state as creator/owner is responsible to finance prison, not prisoners. in that way they would have money and pension. in copenhagen, old man robbed bank, for what if he got normal life? he didn't get normal life, especially if he spent his life in prison and didn't have chance to have 15000 DKK per month.
19:25 October 26, 2009 by mkvgtired
speedygonzales, the Danes are the most highly taxed nation on earth how many more social safety nets do you want for this poor bank robber? The prisons in Sweden cant remain open anyway. If everyone gets a 20 month sentence for murder how can they? Are you advocating having no penalties for crime? Also, this whole "hate speech" thing really bugs me. It is ok to hold up signs "freedom go to hell" "down with democracy" "Death to Israel" "Europe learn a lesson from 9/11", and that is not hate speech. Admitting there is a problem in Europe because many new immigrants are anti-democracy is hate speech. Not sure I know how that works. It seems more and more that whatever goes against the traditional political line of the state is labeled as "hate speech". Very Orwellian. Someone needs to tell the Eurocrats in Brussels that when Orwell wrote 1984 it was supposed to be a satire pointing out the dangers of over sized government. I think they missed this concept and are using it as their manual for democracy.

I have to say I agree with both DreEstwd opening comment and his follow-up comment...I'm not altogether sure this would solve the problem but it would sure go a long way towards some solution.
11:01 October 27, 2009 by Rick Methven
DreEstwd.

It may be true that 30% of prisoners in Sweden are foreign nationals. They come from all over Europe, Russia, Far East etc. - Biggest group, I have heard is the Serbian Mafia

Where you always go wrong is that because of your single track mind you equate immigrant with Muslim and just like your SD controllers you then say "30% of prisoners are Muslim" Just like you say that "ALL rape in Sweden is done by Muslims".

You are very fond of using the word FACTS when what you really mean is " I do not have any proof but this is what I would like to be the FACT and maybe if I keep saying it long enough maybe people will believe me.

I am not an Arabic apologist, I have said on many occasions that there are problems that need to be addressed. The sort of unfounded Islamaphobic fear mongering the you and your ilk go around spreading does absolutely nothing to improve the situation
