Sweden's Supreme Court has upheld a landmark ruling in which a 30-year-old animal rights activist was convicted for his involvement in storming the premises of four companies and harassing members of staff.

The 30-year-old Malmö resident was sentenced on charges of aggravated unlawful entry by the Swedish Supreme Court.

In 2005, the man was contacted by members of a British animal rights organisation. The organisation had made a number of threats and carried out attacks on British company, Huntington Life Sciences (HLS), which participates in animal testing.

Along with several accomplices, the Malmö resident proceeded to engage in attacks on four of the company's Swedish clients in September of 2005.

The 30-year-old is known to have hired one of the three minibuses which carried activists from one business location to the next. He was also responsible for ringing the doorbell and luring company employees to the door.

Once the door was opened, activists proceeded to force their way into the premises, dropping high-pitched alarms, screaming into megaphones and kicking down doors. The activists referred to company employees as 'murderers' and forcefully prevented them from calling the police.

One employee was on the verge of jumping through a window to escape the attack.

The 30-year-old was originally cleared by the Malmö District Court, which found that the crime was not of an 'aggravated' nature. But when the case was submitted to the Court of Appeal, the man was found guilty of aggravated unlawful entry – a conviction which could have resulted in a two-month jail sentence.

Instead, the Malmö resident was fined 12,000 kronor ($1,800) and ordered to pay for the cost of his defence (an additional 16,000 kronor).

The man proceeded to lodge an appeal with the Swedish Supreme Court which ruled that the crime should indeed be viewed as 'aggravated' and premeditated, as mini-buses had been hired in advance to move the culprits between various business locations.

The court ruling provides an important legal precedent for the protection of the workplace in Sweden, finding the violation of a workplace and disturbance of employees to be an 'aggravated' crime.

This needs to be stamped out quickly.

These people will attack the scientific base in the Skåne area, driving away companies and jobs, just as they did in the UK.

The people who attacked Huntington life sciences should not be allowed a foothold in Sweden. They are terrorists. They think nothing of digging up dead relatives of researchers and holding the corpse to ransom.

They really need to get these people examined by psychiatrists as they are all insane.

nemesis, be careful that nemesis don't come to you. terrorism is killing of civilians, and I don't see that civilians are killed by animal rights activists. good that judge finished better school than you.

Before judging too quickly perhaps you should check out some you tube videos on what the animals go through in these places, it is heart wrenching and appalling that we as humans can do such things to animals/living creatures.

While i dont totally agree with the methods used, i do think something needs/needed to be done... there was/is real evil with testing different products on living creatures who cant talk back and tell you what they are going through, but can only scream in agony.

speedygonzales, they could easily kill people with their methods. They blew up the car of a NYSEuronext employee in London while it was at his home. That could have killed one of his children (or him) and the fire could have spread to his house. The reason? NYSEuronext lists shares of firms that test on animals. That is like blaming Deutsche Bank for the actions of Josef Fritzl because he had a bank account there (assuming he did). Their actions are borderline insane. Just because you dont agree with how these companies treat animals doesnt mean you have to condone the actions of these borderline terrorists.

@eZee.se The only way to find cures for many of these horrible diseases is to test with animals. It's sad and unpretty but it can save many humans lives. I have had aunts and uncles die terrible painful deaths due to cancer. I have a good friend with young kids who has Parkinson's. I have an Aunt die a horrible death with Alzheimer's. I have a friend again with small children with type 1 diabetes which will kill her eventually. Another friend with MS with small children. Children are everyday of diseases that we might eventually cure . Animal testing is correct and moral and needed and people who attack the people who are working to save human lives are criminals and terrorists and morally wrong. The people who voice support for these criminals are also mistaken. If you really think you want my friends and relatives people like them die them vote that way but don not support criminal and terrorist attacks on people.

What those of you who comment on this are missing is the "precedent" part. It will now make any business essentially a law protected fortress. No matter what you agree with, the private sector has become more private.

Think about the implications of what has just happened. Now you may or may not agree with animal testing. You may think it entirely appropriate for us to experiment on other species if it is for our benefit. You may disagree with that. But now it is not only the animal testing company with this protection, it can be used by abortion clinics, stem cell research companies, bio tech, economic and commerce entities...

You can end up branded with the same stigma of being an ex convict like rapists and pedophiles. All because you display a rational response to a system that exploiting everyone around you.

Is this the society a world with our knowledge should tolerate?

I agree 100% with eZee.se.

The torture and abuse that animals suffer is NEVER an excuse for what they have to go thru. Those who think this treatment is moral and necessary have lost their soul plain and simple. We used to think blacks were inhuman and treated them as commodities, today the animals are taking their place. Animal testing is BIG business and until this world makes an effort to stop the torture we will have people who will do whatever it takes to stop this nonsensical practice. I also believe that what goes around comes around and as long these misguided scientists inflict pain and horrible suffering on another life it will come back to them ten fold........I also agree what they are doing IS evil. The means do not justify the end.
02:41 October 27, 2009 by here for the summer
@john649 the means do not justify the end to that we both agree. This applies to terrorist attacks on well meaning doctors. I happen to value both human and animal life but human life above animal life. We eat animals. They are breed, raised and killed and eaten. To say then that special rats and mice who are not tortured but used for rational necessary experiments to save human lives are somehow more sacred is wrong plain and simple.

What a freaking world we live in today. Someday we will wake up and find that animals have more rights than humans. This is unbelievable!! There's thousands of people starving and dying from disease, war and hunger all around the world and it is shocking to imagine how much money some people spend on ANIMALS, and just how much time they devote to caring and grooming them. I think this guy should be doing some real time in jail so that it gives him enough time to think about his actions.

Its not a matter of agreeing or disagreeing with animal experimentation, its about keeping within the realms of the law. Those who are concerned with animal rights can picket, lobby and carry out other forms of legal and peaceful action to prevent animal cruelty. What this ruling does is protect the person and property of companies and individuals from violent attack.

If you look into the more 'radical' animal rights groups, you will find the so called activists are nothing more than yobs with a taste for violence with a history of membership of groups that carry out acts of violence. They try to gain some respectability by justifying their action under the umbrella of some group. It does not work for terrorists who carry out acts of violence in the name of Islam, neither should it be accepted in the name of animal rights.

How can anybody accept the sort of threats posted in the discussion pages here from 'Animal rights activists' http://www.thelocal.se/discuss/index.php?showtopic=26315&hl=
