The father of a three-year-old girl from northern Sweden is outraged that school photographers have retouched his daughter’s school picture for the second year in a row.

Per Engman, the proud father of three-year-old Meja Flymalm from Luleå is irate that a scar on his daughter’s face has magically disappeared from her class picture.

“It’s just not right, it’s a sign that people refuse to accept the world as it is and all these problems associated with idealized beauty just seem wrong,” Engman told the local Norrbottens-Kuriren newspaper.

Last year, Meja fell down the night before her school picture, leaving her with a visible red mark on her cheek. But when the photos came back, the mark was gone.

This year, school photographers took it upon themselves to edit Meja’s photo to remove a scar on her nose from stitches she received after falling off a sofa.

“They assume that parents don’t want scars, but I do. The scar is a part of who she is,” her father told the newspaper.

Thord Larsson of Thords foto who was hired by the preschool to take the pictures said that the photo retouching took place at the lab and that many parents are happy to have blemishes digitally removed from their children’s faces.

“There are a lot of parents who are happy when marks which may have shown up from a scratch that morning are made to disappear, and the same goes for runny noses,” Larsson told Norrbottens-Kuriren.

“We just want things to be nice and cute.”

Larsson was nevertheless apologetic about the incident, claiming that children’s school pictures are normally never retouched without the parents’ permission.

“We don’t sit around and embellish the pictures; we think the children are really sweet as they are,” said Larsson.

I have school photos of my son when he was 4/5/6 with scars. looking at them 20 years on triggers a memory. Ah that was when he...............

All kids get cuts and scars, it is a part of growing up show them all. Or should all our kids have plastic surgery for every little tumble?

I was fat kid and I would have love it if some one had digitally 'slimmed' me down. But I love seeing my photos now, especially because I'm thinner and my friends from school are now a bit more 'rounded' :-)

What a worthless piece of news. Was this ranked above or below a cat running up a tree in Gothenberg and being rescued by the fire department?

A brave man. I am glad there are a few people who are not willing to join the rat race for "beauty" and teach their children to stand their ground in life.

Congrats, Mr. Engman!

From this so called 'worthless piece of news' arise many points about rights, privacy, the idealised beauty syndrome in society, the desire to market a better product,etc.etc.

Of course, The Local could be filled with crime, political conundrums, international insecurities, economic gymnastics, etc.etc.

I,personally, like the blend of the very human with the supposedly 'more informative'.

I also think it a sign of an interesting and caring society that this is an item of news and that cats being rescued is newsworthy.

I do,however, recognise that perhaps these items are not 'sensationalised enough' for some thrill seeking individuals. Maybe the article should have spoken about some vast conspiracy theory, watergate style, and The Local journalists could have created some 'gross breach of human rights' angle, thus appealing more to the 'pulitzer brigade'. Amazing what this 'non-news item' reveals.

There is some irony and need for reflection here. The irony is that this article is presented on a web page FULL of retouched pictures and articles about perfect celebs. Is it not only natural to assume that we want physical perfection? Whatever that is.
