Gothenburg haunted by mystery rapist

Police in Gothenburg are on the hunt for a perpetrator suspected in a number of rapes and as many as thirty attempted sexual assaults in recent weeks.

“He won’t stop until we arrest him,” police spokesperson Björ Blixter told the TT news agency.

The man is an official suspect in two rapes, two attempted rapes, and two sexual assaults, all of which took place in the last two to three weeks.

But when police began knocking on doors in the Johanneberg neighbourhood where he is believed to operate, they received clear indications that the suspected rapist was close to attacking a further 20 to 30 women.

“The picture is quite clear as to whom we’re looking for,” said Blixter.

The so-called Johanneberg Man, is patient and his odd methods have surprised police.

He has been seen approaching buildings on foot, on an old bicycle or via moped. He then goes from door to door, ringing the bells of potential victims hoping to force his way inside.

“He’s really direct and looks women who open their doors straight in the eye and asks, for example, ‘Are you married, will you marry me, is your husband home, do you want to have a quickie?’” said Blixter.

“If he’s met with resistance and the door is closed, he just goes across the hall and rings the next door and tries again. He can ring at a lot of doors before he leaves an area.”

If a man opens the door, however, the suspect looks down, says he’s come to the wrong door, and disappears.

Police received a tip last Friday that they hoped would lead to an arrest. Upon arriving on the scene in Johanneberg, police found a man running up and down the stairs of a building.

But it turned out the man was simply distributing flyers door-to-door, writes the Göteborgs-Posten newspaper.

“The man hasn’t so far shown himself to be violent, but there’s a risk that things could escalate,” said Blixter, who suspects the man will return.

“He may be lying low for a while because we’re going to the public with information about it, but I don’t think that he’ll give up until we arrest him.”

"The man hasn't so far shown himself to be violent, but there's a risk that things could escalate," said Blixter

I was under the impression that rape was an act of violence against another human being. My bad, in Sweden rape is just a different method people are allowed to get their rocks off to.
09:25 November 9, 2009 by Kaethar
Sweden has a very different definition of rape than what you're used to.

I guess he is one of the many career rapists that has made his way to Sweden from all over the world to take advantage of the lax justice system and lib permissive society. Until things change I'm afraid that this kind of offence will continue to blight peoples lives in Sweden.
11:36 November 9, 2009 by bocale1
@double concerto, do you really think that a guy who knocks at any door asking "Are you married, will you marry me, is your husband home, do you want to have a quickie?" is a "career rapist that has made his way to Sweden from all over the world to take advantage of the lax justice system and lib permissive society"???

Come on, let´s be serious.

This is the sort of news that in any other country of the world would not even be reported as case of rape, probably just archived as mental disease with no major consequences on other people...

Is there any way that we can get an idea of what this person looks like? Ethnicity? Any freaking thing at all which might help the public identify him??
13:12 November 9, 2009 by Iraniboy
Oh that's where I live. Fortunately I'm not girl.

*He won't stop until we arrest him," police spokesperson Björ Blixter told the TT news agency

Of course he won't! So police is waiting untill he stops?!! Swedish police is realy weak in all areas. Criminal and crime should be stopped by police. That's exactly what they should do.

I am under the impression this man is a gentleman, probably a cureless romantic also. He knows true love lies behind one of those doors, and one day it will be his.
15:24 November 9, 2009 by this_aint_sparta
@ Osokin

yeah but before he finds his TRUE love he is gonna rape 3 dosens of FALSE love.
15:37 November 9, 2009 by eZee.se
Anyone else wonder if that line has actually worked on anyone?

" 'Are you married, will you marry me, is your husband home, do you want to have a quickie?' "

I think it would be hilarious if after he is caught he says that 'direct approach' worked a few times

Come on The Local this is a useless article, how about trying some journalism? When you cut and paste this tosh please try to also answer the obvious questions raised by the translation.

Like: His modus operandi? How can he be a rapist when he is non-violent? What does he look like? How the police are suggesting that people deal with this person? Etc. . .
16:00 November 9, 2009 by kim sim
It would be better if there is a rough description of how he looks....It will help women in Johhaneberg/Gothenburg to be careful rather than wondering if every unidentified 'man' who enters the building or rings a wrong door bell is the suspect..

"Why is everyone so mean on this guy?

Obviously he is just a nice sort of fellow who has no luck with the ladies, and only wants what he is entitled to. So we should send him to counseling and a few thousand Kronor to poland and russia so he can meet up with a few lovely ladies of teh evening every year so he doesn't bother women anymore or maybe set up a profile on the government sanctioned website www.RapistsRUs.Se"

Is what a Swedish judge will say when they finally catch the chap.

THE GUY ISNT VIOLENT?

Seriously If I had no conscience or a soul I would go to Sverige and do what this guy and other guys do and get a slap on the wrist.
18:09 November 9, 2009 by soultraveler3
How can he have raped 2 women and then they say

"The man hasn't so far shown himself to be violent, but there's a risk that things could escalate," said Blixter, who suspects the man will return."

How does that make sense? Did The Local screw up a story or are the cops that stupid and pc?

I hope the women living in that area stop opening the doors to people they don't know. You know the swedish cops aren't going to protect you so please use your heads and protect yourself.

I got into that habit long ago.

If someone comes to my door and I don't know them and I'm not expecting a package or a maintance guy I don't open the door.

It's not out of fear that I started doing this, just got sick of pushy religious people and salespeople coming around wanting to waste my time. We always had people coming to our doors in my old neighborhood. Lol, guess we looked like sinners with money or something. :)

Besides deterring annoying types, simply not opening the door to people you don't know, might also deter crime. Sometimes the simplest thing can do that.
18:28 November 9, 2009 by mkvgtired
Well women make sure to keep your cell phones on you when you answer the door. If you are confronted just call 112 and say:

"Um I would really appreciate it if you would send the police to my home, as I am currently being raped. I wasted my legally permissible single blow to the offender but for some reason he is still raping me. As I do not have an extra $7000 and do not wish to waste an entire year of my life, I am barred from defending myself further. Actually scratch that, since the police will surly arrive after the rapist, I mean guy society has treated unjustly, has left I will walk to the local hospital to have the rape kit performed myself. No sense in wasting your time."

The police describe the man as being:

-About 20 years old.

- Short dark hair. (Possibly curly)

- Relatively short, possibly 170-175 cm tall.

- Speaks good Swedish, possibly with a foreign accent.

- Normal built. (A bit pudgy)

Här är signalementet på den misstänkta gärningsmannen.

• han är i 20-årsåldern

• mörkt, kortklippt hår, kan vara lite lockigt

• har babyface, litet runt ansikte

• talar bra svenska, med viss brytning

• uppfattas som relativt kort, 170-175 cm lång

• normal, lite rund kroppsbyggnad

come on people, dear Swedes!!!

2 days ago one girl approached me (I have not seen her before) in tram and without saying hello asked for my number. Should I call it as a rape? I bet if it happened against men, it would not be so exaggerated. Oh, swedes, swedes, get rid of this ultrafeminism.

Im actually surprised that the man is still running around raping people. I dont know about the women in that neighbourhood but if I opened the door and a dude asked me those silly questions, I would check through the peephole to see if he is knocking on any neighbours' door then call the police. In another country I would have called the actual neighbour and warned them, but lets face it, this is sweden, we don't know our neighbours.
