Social Democrat party leader Mona Sahlin has responded to a new opinion poll showing an increased support for the far-right Sweden Democrats by voicing the possibility of governing with the Liberal and Centre parties.

According to Synovate's opinion poll, published in the Dagens Nyheter (DN) and Sydsvenskan newspapers, the far-right Sweden Democrats can lay claim to the support of 4.7 percent of the electorate.

If the poll were to reflect the general election result then neither of the major political blocs would be in a position to form a majority government and would leave the balance of power with a party that all parliamentary parties have ruled out working with.

The support for the Sweden Democrats is at a record level in this poll although is not considered statistically significant.

The red-green opposition triumvirate had the support of 48.7 percent in the poll while the governing Alliance had 45.4 percent.

Mona Sahlin called for the formation of a cross-bloc coalition in order to keep the Sweden Democrats from the corridors of power.

"Nothing other than a cross-bloc majority government is acceptable. With the challenges faced by Sweden in the next couple of years it would be a political catastrophe with a minority government dependent on the Sweden Democrats," she told DN.

The parties that the Social Democrats could consider working with are the Liberal and Centre parties, although not the Moderates.

The overall results for voter support are as follows, with the changes from the previous poll in parentheses:

Moderates: 30.2 (+1.2); Liberal Party: 6.2 (-1.6); Centre Party: 4.9 (-0.1); Christian Democrats: 4.1 (-0.6); Green Party: 9.1 (+1.3); Social Democrats: 35.0 (+4.0); Left Party: 4.6 (-0.2); Sweden Democrats: 4.7 (+0.8).

Synovate interviewed 1,972 people for the poll between November 11th-25th.

Long way to go still, but if Mona continue like this SD will get more and more votes, this will be very intresting to see how this develops. good job Mona go ob like this and you´ll serve sd victory on a schrimptoast.

Mona appears hungry for power, and Heaven help Sweden if she gets it. However, on the immigration thing, one wonders why it is that you cannot even talk about the issue here. I understand that Sweden is an Orwellian nightmare when it comes to thinking politically incorrect thoughts, but the stranglehold the far left (the Social Democrats and their alliance) and the left (the Moderates and their alliance) is crumbling due to the internet. People can compare what is going on in other nations without listening to the anti-semite, left wing, press in Sweden as well as learn about what is going on in their own nation.

It´s a loaded subject thats for sure, because if you even have a slightest diffrent point of view you´ll emidoantly get branded as a racist. i pesonally want a restricted acceptance of numbers regarding refugees. becuase at the moment we cant handle to integrate the numbers arriving into our society. with integration i mean getting work.

huge amounts actions needs to be taken to do something about it, and as the big parties dont dare speaking about to the public you´ll get forced to vote on sd to make them open their eyes.

I think this happens all over the EU.

The mainstream parties should not be getting into a flap. They should be asking themselves why are people considering voting far right? People dont turn fascist or extreme overnight. Something is happening and its not being addressed, thats why these Parties are starting to do well.

I still think Mona is pushing the panic button to scare people. It would be a disaster for FP or C to link up with the Social Democrats, they would just get swallowed up. The Swedish Social Democrats are just concerned with power, they have to be to allow that idiot Lars Ohly into government....

i agree with you the mainstream parties "should" ask themself why people going to the right. however that means they´ll have to confess that they are wrong. and honestly have you ever seen a swedish politican do that, on top of that can you honestly think that Mona Sahlin would ever confess something so absolutley unswedish to say you been wrong on television.

Spiffy waddle Mona is sporting. So much for square jawed Scandic features. Gobble Gobble.

A waddle is found on a turkey neck. (Kalkon hals). She looks likes she has been hanging out on Hamburger Hill in Värnamo. All traces of the strong, chiseled jawline that Scandinavians are known for has been buried under a mountain of Big Macs. ;-)

Mona is a handsome woman. I just can't believe she appears to be within three feet of Maud Olofsson's person.

I always thought that both women had a nuclear device implanted in their bowels set to explode whenever the other comes closer than one yard.

Doesn't Mona look a lot like the guy who played Dr. Who during the late 1970?
