Reinfeldt calls on US to raise climate targets

Swedish Prime Minster Fredrik Reinfeldt implored the United States on Wednesday to implement more ambitious goals for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

"We think the targets set by the US are not comparable with what we have done in the European Union," said Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency until the end of the year.

Europe cannot at the moment increase its carbon dioxide reduction pledge, he added in online video comments on the eve of a European summit.

EU leaders have pledged to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 20 percent by 2020 from 1990 levels.

The 27 member states have also said they will deepen those cuts to 30 percent if they see comparable efforts being made in developed nations such as the United States, Australia, Canada, Japan and Norway.

Some nations, led by Britain, are keen to make the 30 percent cuts pledge, but others, notably the poorer eastern EU member states such as coal-reliant Poland, are more reticent.

EU figures published last week showed confirmed pledges from developed nations outside the bloc averaging cuts of just 13 percent.

International negotiations on tackling climate change got underway in Copenhagen on Monday.

But Reinfeldt made it clear that, given the current level of pledges, the EU summit in Brussels on Thursday and Friday would not agree to bigger cuts.

"We still want further targets from the developed world, in that case we will be able to move," he stressed.

The US House of Representatives in June narrowly passed a plan to cut emissions by 17 percent by 2020 from 2005 levels.

However Republican lawmakers critical of efforts to battle climate change have vowed to fly next week to the Copenhagen summit to undercut President Barack Obama's promises of strong US action.

Would it not be considered poor form for this marxist witch to cover her face with Old Glory?
13:49 December 10, 2009 by Roy E
Yes, it is poor form. But since when where activists ever concerned about form? Their cause, whatever it may be, is always the most important consideration. In the end, it's a display of self-righteous adolescent narcissism more than anything else - and a good indication that you're looking at a person you'd probably be better off not knowing.

,,,which is why the voting age must be brought back to 21.

@ Beynch

Get over it buddy, does it matter if the voting age is 21, realistically no matter who the majority vote in he/she will not be able to accopmplish much other then stuffing their pockets with the funds of their nations hard earned money.

Lets actually say we drop the voting age to 3 1/2 just because most politicians behave just like toddlers. It would only be fair. LOL

These pledges are about as big of a joke as "climate change" itself.

The fact is, all these countries send in thier pretty faces "pledging" what each country will aim to do. Then, they have to get their countries citizens, and in turn, the congress, house, representative branch of goverment to go along with it.

Cap and Trade legislation that the US is offering, is as good as dead in the house/senate. Enjoy your lip service Copenhagen. Nice publicity stunt in the face of a investigation of falsified data.

You ever notice it's always america that is expected to step up to the plate on climate control. Why don't that b..tch, have a chinese, indian or russian flag over her face, these are monster size countrys that put out much more pollution in the air than america, and with little regulations. Oh and can you just imagine how much pollution african countrys as whole put into the air.

to #7:

China's average greenhouse gas emissions per person are much lower than those of rich nations. The average American is responsible for greenhouse gas emissions equal to 25.0 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year, compared to 5.8 tonnes for the average Chinese, according to the World Resources Institute.

The global warming has been overwhelmingly caused by the accumulated greenhouse gas emissions of rich economies, and they should lead in dramatically cutting emissions.

By the way, scientist reports says that 80% of the world carbon emission has been from the rich countres since 1750.

@ Beynch

Absolutely correct. Once again the jealously of the rest of the world rears it's very ugly head. They don't like our success, so they blame it on our use of resources to try to find fault in what we do and why they aren't equally successful. In actuality, they could care less about the Earth's resources, what they don't like is our success at harnessing it to enrich ourselves. What they really want, is for the whole world to be poor and unhappy, that's their goal - - nothing more.

The Republicans are the only ones standing in the way of Stalinism. Hasn't Reinfeldt heard the Climate Change religion is a cult.

The reason China, India argue they can not be compared to the rich economies of the west is because Europe and N. America had to pollute to get where they are. India and China are arguing that if you guys did it we have the right to do it to, and if you want us to cut greenhouse gasses you come up with the techonology and hand it over to us free of charge. Only problem is the technology to cut emissions will be produced mainly by the private sector and no business will give away their work for free or even at a red tag price.

In turn this is another way for the west to try and lockdown the developing countries and make sure they obey the "master" too bad we in the west (our governments) don't understand that emperialism is long gone.
09:30 December 11, 2009 by bjinger
The problems of climate change we face today are the results of the industralization of the developed countries for the last centuries, so there is a common but differentiated responsibility for all the countres in the world. It requires the rich to help the developing countries while the latter assumes a sustainable development in the future. Obviously, the rich should do more for their past and invest for the common future.

China and India have done littlt wrong in the emissions for centuries and they are ready to go hand and hand with US and EU to raise the percentage target, but the problems are that the rich countries are ill-willed in Oslo and not to do as much as they can by 2020. So it's the rich to blame.

I have been following The Local for quite some time and sometimes the reader comments are ludicrous, sometimes just funny, but most often enlightning! Today the comments to several articles are refreshingly free of liberal nonsense, except for maybe @bjinger.

The outright treason as fostered by Al Gore et al against the world population is deplorable and ruinous for most of us -- except for themselves. The "Climategate" fiasco should have opened the eyes of the greenies, but I am afraid that none of us will live long enough to experience the real long cyclic measurements that will unequivocally prove them to be just that -- the natural cycle over hundreds of years and more.

Don't worry about the old Terra Firma! It has done a good job over the eons and will certainly take care of itself in the eons to come -- even if it has to get rid of the human race in the process of survival.

This woman pictured is nothing more than the idiot's we saw in college who wore "Che`" T shirts to celebrate a vicious murderer, so evil even his compatriots turned him over to his enemies. But those 'students' stubbornly believed the venal lies coming out of their professors' mouths, thinking "Che`" cared about "the good of the people". Fools.

"Climate Gate" is only the latest event in the adults beginning to become part of the closed 'closed conversation' which has characterized this "Climate" Tom Foolery expressed herein by the Swedish Prime Minister's "Che`"ist acceptance of the childishness of Al Gore's slavish henchmen. There will be a time in the future when, if these fake 'climate scientists' of the frothing left get their way, that they will be chased through the streets, just ahead of fiercely angry, 'climate' impoverished mobs, their jobs, cars and houses burned to the ground. Their enabling politicians will also be drubbed into obscurity, maybe allowed to work as librarians' assistants (no offense to libraries).

The global warming observed over the past decades is due primarily to no human-induced emissions of heat-trapping gases from the burning of coal, oil, gas, with important contributions from the clearing of forests and agricultural production(anthropogenic factors). Is global warming caused primarily by natural factors, especially with state of the hydrosphere. Natural condensation of atmospheric humidity to affect on state of the climate(affect on all : weather fronts, ocean currents). Anthropogenic factors physically no comparable with naturals and have limited influence on the climate variability at the local level. This is only a drop in the sea.

Impossible to influence on atmospheric circulation. And people need to see results. Therefore began to appear talking heads public speaking that is all because of anthropogenic factors. This is a fairly handy side. Media PR and desire to show what local level equal global.

Why Brussel unhappy with United States.

In 2008, Henry Paulson asked Congress for the authority to use government money(700 billions) to back the companies, arguing that if he had the authority, he would be less likely to do it. Paulson Plan(revised) was approved by Congress. Also Paulson was denied a bank loan in People Bank of PRC(inappropriate, they are trying to solve their own problems), but Paulson gave foreign sovereign wealth fund(600 billions) somewhere. Department of the Treasury will support industry against import. How probably dissatisfied in Brussel that Paulson support U.S. manufacturers.

United States "must reduce emissions" - Fredrik Reinfeldt, Van Rompuy. As predictable
