Eva Gabrielsson, the long-time partner of the prolific author, Stieg Larsson, who died of a heart attack in 2004 aged only 50, has refused the 20 million Swedish kronor ($2.8 million) that the author’s brother and father offered her in a gesture to alleviate a long-running dispute over the author’s estate, her brother has told the news agency TT.

“She received an offer and she said ‘no thanks’. I can't make a judgment about why she refused,” Joakim Larsson told TT.

Stieg Larsson’s brother, and his father, Erland, have said that they want to make peace with Gabrielsson once and for all. In the beginning of November they offered her 20 million kronor through the Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet.

Joakim Larsson said that there were no conditions attached to the offer. “We offered her the money so that she could live a financially comfortable life,” he said.

Stieg Larsson shot to fame in Sweden and abroad with his distinctive style of detective novels, which culminated in the Millennium Trilogy; the series of novels which he completed just before his death, and which were published posthumously to wide acclaim. The novels have sold 20 million copies in Europe alone, and have earned the writer’s estate an estimated 130 million kronor.

After the writer’s death, a heated debate in the media ensued about who was the rightful heir to his work. Legal proceedings found the brother and the father as the only heirs, as Larsson and Gabrielsson were never married, and did not have wills which bequeathed parts of their estates to each other. However, Gabrielssson explained that Larsson identified the book manuscripts as their pension when he submitted them to the publisher, Norstedts.

The couple lived together for 30 years. One reason why they were never married was that Larsson did not want to put her in danger, since in Expo - the magazine at which he became editor-in-chief - and in his books, he was a strident critic of Swedish neo-Nazis. A neo-Nazi newspaper published a veiled threat to Larsson’s life in 1993, for which the publisher was jailed for four months.

When they made the offer to Gabrielsson, Larsson’s father and brother said they were tired of being portrayed as the ‘bad guys’ in the story.

Gabrielsson's lawyer Sara Pers-Krause told TT her client did not want to resolve the inheritance row through media outlets.

Larsson's books depict a dark and violent Sweden brimming with state and family secrets, and follow the lives of Mikael Blomkvist, an investigative reporter, and Lisbeth Salander, a feisty rebel hacker-turned-detective.

She lived with Stieg for 30 years .... what else if not his WIFE!

Many lived for less than that with their ex. and got more. For heavens sake show some respect to Stieg's relationship with her.
12:06 December 11, 2009 by Plowbridge
Legally she is entitled to nothing regardless of protests of circumstantial rights.

However morally the family could offer her a lump sum from current assets and a good percentage of future income. That way everyone wins.
12:06 December 11, 2009 by Tennin
I thought there were special sambo laws to protect people from having something like this happens.
12:21 December 11, 2009 by Luckystrike
All money, rights to the books and material should immediately be handed over to Eva Gabrielsson. Not legally I know, but morally! I mean come on!!! Pigs! 20m from a estimated 120m estate...that's a complete insult!

News on the WWW has been circulating that Stieg Larsson's brother, and his father would more than likely sells filming rights to Quentin Tarantino (Staring Brad Pitt as Mikael...Angelina as Lisbeth) ...Although, that is what I read...not fact...but if true...truly disappointing!
13:01 December 11, 2009 by Plowbridge
For once hollywood couldn't make a worse remake than the three made over here. The first was passable and the next two were total crap.
13:08 December 11, 2009 by NickM
I suspect that the relatives did not like this woman from the very start. Otherwise, they'd do the honorable thing and offer her an equal share of any royalties from the success of Larsson's work.
13:27 December 11, 2009 by Luckystrike
I really like the films, didn't know the third part was even available yet....What don't you like about the films Plowbridge ? Is it that you read the books and much prefer them to the films? Or you just didn't enjoy the films (bad acting, storyline...for example ? =)
13:48 December 11, 2009 by Plowbridge
The books IMO were written with pace and had depth to all it's characters. The films formalized and condensed the screenplay manners that weakened all but the Salander role. As they were aimed at the mass market here they lost the edge or incentive to rise above standard fare.

I guess the lesson here is to have a will.

But, "didn't marry her because he was critical of neo-Nazis"...

Did he imagine that not having a signed piece of paper attesting to a relationship would cause them to keep hands off her, if in fact they felt like attacking?

Strange stuff.
15:42 December 11, 2009 by TvAmazon
If they truly felt like being fair they would have offered her at least half the value of the remaining estate. They sound like greedy guys to me.

Incredible.

This world goes from one pervert socialite controversy into the next.

"However, Gabrielssson explained that Larsson identified the book manuscripts as their pension when he submitted them to the publisher, Norstedts."

Unless that is written down somewhere, too bad, so sad.

Legally proceedings found the father and the brother to be the heirs. I don't see what the problem is here. She should be thankful they are offering her anything.

The fair thing to do is to share the money into 2. if she had been married to the man there would be no discussion on who owns the money. 30 years of living with a man is no joke. can this relatives tell us what they contributed to the writer's success.
09:51 December 12, 2009 by krow
GUYS LISTENED " Legal proceedings found the brother and the father as the only heirs" The question is why live with him for 30 years if you are not in the will. Maybe lesson for Tiger Wood to adopt
18:39 December 12, 2009 by Davey-jo
Did this guy not know how to make a will?
07:56 December 13, 2009 by Thompsuleme
The father and brothr are greedy bastards, giving so little to the woman who supported him for 30 4king years and helped him through life, they jus take another mans hard work. Lazy dimwitted Mongrels they are. He could have married her but had reasons. Shitty people they are

I wonder about the law . Is it really possible in home of equal rights Sweden that she can live with him for 30 years and not be considered his wife ?

Can someone please explain the Swedish "Sambo" laws as they compare to the English "common law" marriage .

I believe that Eva is not so interested about the money, Of course money is a very important asset in life. She is much interested in editing the stories that Stig wrote so that any publisher and movie producer will not distort the stories of Salander. Now that Hollywood is interested in the rights for the movies, we all know that alot of the parts of the stories will be change in many ways. If any of you have read Forest Gump, you'll most probably understand me. The movie is fantastictic but reading the book is even 5 times more hilarious than watching the movie. Read Forest Gump and have a good laugh!!!!!!!

I am stunned that Eva is not given more consideration by Stieg Larsson's family. After all, he lived with her for 30 years. I just don't understand the cruelty of families. Does everything have to about money, money, I want more money. The father and the brother just see the money as a free gift. They would have gotten little or nothing if Stieg were alive. Also, even if the courts do not recognize her, the family should anyway.

And the courts not recognizing her is a big shock too. I thought Sweden was a much more modern, fair place. I guess all it not that great in Sweden.

You need to change your laws, Sweden!

I find the entire affair of Stieg's estate filled with irony.

Is this miscarriage of justice not another form of the abuse of a woman?

I am certain that Mr. Larsson would never have thought that he was going to suddenly die and leave his estate to to his father and brother exclusively. The idea that he would have excluded his partner of 30 years is unthinkable. What has happened is blatantly horrifying.

Why in the hell would a man whose life was devoted to justice for all, and particularly for women in his artistic expression with his novels, neglect his life partner? Use common sense for the answer to that question. He would not.

I will not give one dollar to his estate until justice has been given to Eva Gabrielsson. She should have the majority of the estate as she would know what her life partner would have desired.

Stieg would have sent Salander on this journey to solve the corruption here. Obviously, she would have succeeded.

The novel by stieg is awsome ...but i watched the movie the girl with dragon tattoo....very good job...what a thrill...and the lisbeth aka noomi rapace is realy brilliant.......chilling...
05:34 February 12, 2012 by AzureBlue12
Unfortunately the law is the law......and please will people realise that there is NO 'common law' in the UK either. The same injustice would have happened to Eva in the UK as well. So let these unfair laws, which usually penalise the weaker party, which they are supposed to defend be CHANGED.

I know the devastation that happens, I lost everything to my ex-partner, who was a rich man with whom I lived with for 23 years and we had a son. BUT not married.
