Dutch luxury sports carmaker Spyker, which has expressed its interest in buying Saab automobile, is an even less reliable potential suitor than Koenigsegg, claims Christian Berggren, a professor in industrial organization at Linköping University.

The academic also questions the intentions of Spyker and its Russian parent towards Sweden’s iconic car company.

“Either its aims are very unclear, or one can also wonder about the industrial competence of the company,” Berggren told news agency TT.

The prospect of a successful marriage between Spyker and Saab is depressing, in Berggren’s view.

“What Saab needs is a strong industrial owner, with strong finances and resources that drive product development, bring down costs and so on. And this company does not have these things. It is really less reliable than Koenigsegg,” he said.

“When GM chose Koenigsegg, anyone who knew anything about the industry knew that this was a very weak bidder. But GM couldn’t find anything better. As much as possible they want at any cost to put off being liable for the costs of closing the concern. They’re clutching at straws,” Berggren added.

What a load of rubbish, when a news agency like TT has to drag up an uninformed, professor from Linköping University for a quote then they really prove they are not tapped in to the story.

It was an MD of Jaguar who said about the Ford take over of his beloved brand something like this: 'When an elephant goes to bed with a mouse the mouse gets squashed and the elephant doesn't have much fun either.' The same has to be said for GM and Saab.

The depth of General Motors' pockets and their industrial know-how did not work for Saab as they starved it nearly to death over 20 years. I say I say let a smaller investor give Saab the focus and love it deserves. Good luck Spyker, Victor Muller and Saab!

Could Studebaker help? Just joking.Or maybe not, when thinking here inventiveness on engines.

Here we go again. GM goes from one completely unqualified group to an even more completely unqualified group. Spyker is too small and only 6 years in age. Completely inexperienced.

When they realize the condition and challenges at SAAB, they will walk too.

GM should have picked Renco or Wyoming - groups with strong experience and resources.

Spyker...really? Spyker?

First everyone attacks Konegsegg, now they are attacking the next potential buyer.

Looks like all the commentators will only be happy when SAAB and Volvo are owned by Chinese or USA companies.

Saab must be owned by a group with experience in turnarounds and heavy manufacturing to make SAAB healthy. This is not a pretty picture and the purchaser must know what they are doing. Neither Koenigsegg or Spyker has those skills. Both have enough trouble with their own profitability.

This isn't a beauty contest.

@ falcon

This is nothing to do with beauty, it is to do with keping manufacturing jobs inside Europe, not exporting them and leaveing tens of thousands unemployed.

I feel for you as a Mustang GT driver I was practically in tears when my beloved FORD almost died during the economic collapse. When the stock hit $1.05 I went out and bought all I could, so my team could survive. My friend Mark at work did the same, we started to wear blue Izod style shirts to work with FORD emblems on them Our UNION arranged a discount for workers who bought FORDS, my Mustang club held shows to allow people to look at the new cars close up.

But most important, FORD went back to telling the salesmen they were the most important workers in the company. In the end it is about selling cars and trucks, not buyers.

If you want to sell a Swedish car, you have to put your money where your mouth is. Start a stock issue with the intent to buy SAAB, encourage the Americans to give you the company, sit down with the workers and ask them to take part of their pay in stock. Then build the SAAB you have always dreamed of.

FORD's President is an airplane guy, but he has caught the enthusiast's fever at FORD and stock is up to $9.00 a share (yes, saving my team made me a lot of money).

We are going back to Henry Ford's original mission, building a great car, that any worker can afford.

Saving SAAB will come from inside SAAB and Sweden. If you don't ask your workers to help how can they? Get back to your SAAB roots, wasn't the SAAB Sonnet asembled in a barn? Tell your workers SAAB will survive if they save it.

Are my slippers green? I have a mighty collection and are they green? I ask you? Do you care? You do not. Who gives a Swedish flag whether this company owns that or the other way round? The simple fact is you don't own the means of production and you never will as long as these "people" do.

@ Nemesis I fully agree with with you about keeping good jobs in Europe. That is why the SAAB buyer must be skilled in what SAAB needs. While they make nice cars, Koenogsegg and now Spyker lack the experience in heavy manufacturing and turnarounds that Saab requires. Reuters reports Spyker hasn't made a profit since going public.

Both Renco and Wyoming had that experience but GM twice went with very weak groups. A weak buyer isn't good for Sweden or Europe either. A strong buyer committed to keeping Saab in Sweden is the answer.
