New 4G mobile services are now available for customers of Nordic telecom operator TeliaSonera in Stockholm and Oslo, the company announced on Monday.

“We are very proud to be the first operator in the world to offer our customers 4G services,” Kenneth Karlberg, TeliaSonera’s Head of Mobility Services, said in a statement.

“The use of mobile broadband in the Nordic countries is exploding and customers need higher speeds and capacity. This is why we are launching 4G services in both Stockholm and Oslo.”

The 4G/LTE network will enable the use of services "requiring high transmission speed and capacity, such as advanced web TV broadcasting, extensive online gaming and web conferences," added Karlberg.

"The two pioneering 4G city networks cover the central city areas of Stockholm and Oslo and will be used for mobile data," the company also said, adding that 4G was the fastest technology available on the market, "with speeds up to ten times higher than today's turbo 3G."

Starting Monday, TeliaSonera's new 4G network will be available to customers in central Stockholm, as well is parts of nearby Kista, Älvsjö, Liljeholmen, Marievik, Telefonplan, Farsta and Hammarby Sjöstad.

During 2010, the company plans to expand the network to other populous regions and large cities in Sweden, starting with Gothenburg and Malmö.

“Swedes’ demand for higher speeds and greater capacity is almost unlimited. 4G is one of many steps in meeting customers’ needs,” said TeliaSonera’s head of mobile services in Sweden, Erik Hallberg, in a statement.

4G is the fastest mobile technology available on the market, according to the company, with speeds up to ten times higher than today’s turbo 3G.

TeliaSonera, whose largest shareholder is the Swedish state with a stake of around 37 percent and is 13.7 percent owned by the Finnish state, said it held nationwide 4G/LTE licenses in Sweden, Norway and Finland.

I took a quick look at Telia's website and I don't see any 4G devices available in the mobile broadband section. Did I miss something?

I can't even get a mobile signal where I live
12:26 December 14, 2009 by Fernandis
Well, the question is whether it'd be affordable for common ppl....i don't think so. Good for companies, but 3G is in market and still not perfect in terms of its services and money you pay for, thats why a lot of ppl just stay with GPRS for phone calls. It will take another 10-15 years for both 3G and 4G to become attrcative in the market.

It seems like there's a limited number of modems, you can get into a queue for 4G. Wonderful, now we're not just queuing for apartments but also for mobile broadband ;)

I have to aggree with Gletta. There are many places where you cant even get a signal. Would this 4G make a difference if some people can't even send an SMS at times?
15:36 December 14, 2009 by Twiceshy
One of the advantages of 4G is that the signal can travel farther with less degradation, so in the future this could also improve coverage. But there's a few years to go until 4G covers a big part of the country.

"We are very proud to be the first operator in the world to offer our customers 4G services," Kenneth Karlberg, TeliaSonera's Head of Mobility Services, said in a statement.

absolutely false.

4G has been around in south korea and japan for quite some time now. they are already starting to implement 5G in some areas.

nonetheless, its a great step forward, now everyone can watch TV on the train ride to work :)
19:14 December 14, 2009 by Twiceshy
Liquidmonkey the definition of 4G is vague. Typically it refers to a minimum throughput of 100 Mbits/s - 1 Gbits/s. By this standard this new Telia network is not truly 4G yet, as it's only rated for 50 Mbits/s, but it will be upgraded over time to get to 100 Mbits/s and probably beyond that.

So WiMax is not truly 4G, only LTE or LTE-Advanced are, and this Telia network is the first launched for LTE (though as you can see, in a kind of a beta state).

In this sense I don't think Japan and Korea have 4G. Read for example this article, it mentions speed always below 100 Mbits/s:

http://3g4g.blogspot.com/2008/09/japan-to-trial-its-own-4g-technology.html

By the way, can you provide any reference for your 5G claim? I'm not saying you're wrong, but it could be referring to some very weird usage of the term.

This seems a bit premature and costly as yet for the coverage provided to date.

A few years, and ten to fifteen years, are cited in the comments, and the one upbeat comment about watching TV on the train ride to work is a bit much.

Yet, since phones do everything but dance down the street in front of you today, I suppose having a TV in your pocket is the newest way to keep people from talking face- to-face. Can't have that in Sweden, you know.
