A major Hollywood studio is close to finalizing a deal to produce an English-language film adaptation of Swedish author Stieg Larsson’s wildly successful “Millennium” trilogy of crime novels.

According to the Hollywood Reporter newspaper, Sony Pictures is in final stages of negotiating a deal to produce films which would be based directly on Larsson’s books, rather than as English remakes of the Swedish-language films by Danish director Niels Arden Oplev and his Swedish counterpart Daniel Alfredson.

“Stieg Larsson's ‘Millennium’ series is nothing short of amazing,” Doug Belgrad, president of Sony’s Columbia Pictures, told the newspaper.

“The novels are very cinematically told, with fantastic characters and page-turning plots. Once you start reading, they are impossible to put down. Lisbeth Salander is one of the most compelling characters in contemporary fiction and we couldn't be more excited about bringing this project to the screen.”

Plans call for the screenplay based on the first book in the Larsson trilogy, “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” (Män som hatar kvinnor), to be written Steve Zaillian, who received an Oscar for the script for Schindler’s List.

The Swedish film adaptation of the first book in the “Millennium” series was released in Sweden in February 2009, and attracted nearly 6.5 million viewers and €55 million ($81 million) in worldwide box office receipts in just over six months in release.

The “Millennium” trilogy features the adventures of investigative reporter Mikael Blomkvist and rebellious hacker Lisbeth Salander as they navigate a dark and dangerous web of family and state secrets.

The books have been translated into more than 30 languages and sold more than 10 million copies worldwide.

Larsson, a Stockholm-based investigative journalist, died in November 2004 of a heart attack at the age of 50, just a year year before the trilogy was published in Sweden.

Good opportunity to show some good-will and offer his girlfriend a nice share of the pie otherwise the karma police will chase them down.

I hope they don't do the same as they did with the French film, Nikita. It was remade as "The point of no return" and was a poor shadow of the original.

Fine. Let Hollywood do something with it. One can only hope though that the on-location filming actually takes place in Sweden, i.e.Stockholm, Gothenburg, Södermanland, Härnösand, etc.. All illusions would be completely ruined if this becomes a Hollywood backlot job with paper maché stage props, Jack-in-the Box in the background, and California palm trees. Please inform Sony that if this is a Hollywood studio schlock job, few people will see it. It should also be in Swedish with subtitles! Thank you.

Totally agree with you Beynch! On all points.

@beýnch Yes because Swedish is the best, most popular language ever! And maybe they can film it during the 25 minuits of summer we get.

The locations should certaintly be Sweden. It offers this gentle tenebrous and sullenly ill backdrop which is perfect for this flick

Yes, maybe the film should be based in Sweden but the family negotiating the deal have shown that they are very greedy and will probably agree to anything Sony says.

J.K.Rowling insisted on Harry Potter being filmed on british location and with british actors, and it is all the better for it.

Why must Hollywood do this? They take excellent movies and mini series stories and just because they are not "Americanized" stories or are subtitled, they feel the need to re-do them or condense them to fit in a 2 hour movie.

EX:

"Bella Martha" = "No Reservations"

"Traffic"

"State of Play"

Hollywood, and the The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, indeed.

Bergman this is not; and Sweden will not be well-served by the plastic Hollywood.

In Swedish? Who in the Hollywood Industry speaks Swedish, or is able to produce a Swedish production that won't end up looking like an western American cowboy-movie made in Russia?

This is definitely a down-ward step for Sweden.

lingonberrie, "end up looking like an western American cowboy-movie made in Russia?" Hilarious! I recently saw Valkyrie. I thought it was a good movie, and a great story to tell. We hear to little of the resistance to Hitler by the Germans. But they didn't even have German accents. I mean c'mon they are getting pretty lazy out there in LA.

I watched both "Män som hatar kvinnor" o "Flickan som lekte med elden" last month and I loved the gritty feel to them,Hollywood will no doubt make good slick movies but after watching Daniel Alfredson I'm not sure they can satisfy the Scandinavian public...but people do deserve to see these masterpieces of print in English,I thought Noomi Rapace played a briiliant Lisbeth Salander...will be interesting to see who gets that gig.
