The groundbreaking Swedish pop group ABBA is set to be inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next year.

The Swedish pop icons will enter the Hall of Fame along with punk rockers the Stooges, art-rockers Genesis, reggae's Jimmy Cliff and beat band The Hollies.

"ABBA first put Sweden on rock's global map," the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame said in a statement to announce the four Swedes were poised to join the likes of heavy metal group Black Sabbath, punk pioneers the Sex Pistols, and jazz trumpeter Miles Davis in rock music's pantheon.

The five groups will be officially inducted into the rock and roll shrine at a ceremony in New York on March 15 next year.

After their induction, films recounting the five groups' careers and a display of artifacts will be on display at the Hall of Fame Museum, while just about every song written by each of the bands will feature on a computerized jukebox.

That will mean that music fans could segue from the Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog" to Genesis's "One-eyed Hound" and on to ABBA's "Waterloo" before selecting "Many Rivers to Cross" by Jimmy Cliff or The Hollies' "The Air that I Breathe."

The newcomers on the rock and roll block "represent a great cross-section of artists that define the broad spectrum and history of rock and roll and people that have contributed immeasurably to our business," Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation president Joel Peresman said in a statement.

Everytime I hear ABBA it makes me want to rock out like a... rock star...

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame sounds too missleading, they should chang it to simply The Music Hall of Fame.

Well, I guess based on their global mass appeal they deserve a spot at th R&RHoF. Musically I always felt ABBA was less than exciting. More like what in the 60s used to be called "bubble gum", i.e. it requires no effort to listen to it. By the way I definitely do not think the name should be changed to The Music Hall of Fame! That would generalize, trivialize and demean its very concept. After all we, the baby boomer generation, do like Rock'n Roll! It's part of our very fabric.

@Beynch

Based on your statement that ABBA "requires no effort to listen to it", could you explain why music that you wanted to listen to "required an effort to listen to it".

I have always felt that one listened to music that they wanted to listen to. You just listened to it. The idea of music that requires an effort to listen to is therefore a novelty to me.

Please explain if you can.

Congrats ABBA... well deserved.

ABBA defined the Sweden of the 1970's that I used to know. They weren't my favourite group of that era but certainly deserve to be inducted into the hall of fame.

ABBA did put Sweden on the map for music. It was a big influence. They deserve to be recognized and awarded. But I would never ever consider their music Rock, that's all I'm saying.

ABBA rocks! Sweden rocks!

Congratulations to the ABBA members it is about time. I doubt Agnetha will fly to the States for the ceremony though even though it would be awesome to see them all together again.

@2394040: Comparing ABBA to my musical taste, is to compare cake to fois gras.

ABBA made pop music. I would disagree that ABBA were rock, rock and roll, hard rock, metal rock or devil rock. Yes, they made good music, soothing, soul filling, meaningful, so much that some lines of thier songs still ring in my ears 25 years latter.
