Shame no scandinavian consortium couldn't put together a proposal, scale down the company and return it to profitability.
Anyway, I'm glad the government didn't bail out Saab, as it would be a money losing business...
Good thing the economy in Sweden is booming and that these over 10000 involved emoployees (incl. suppliers) can easily find other jobs so they do have a merry christmas with their families! (this is cynical)
The real question is, if they can't be profitable at the current sales volume, how would they be profitable by reducing supply? There's a reason why small car brands get bought out by huge car consortiums.
It's definitely true that the car market is over-supplied, but not all brands can downsize and survive.
I know very well why I have a Toyota Prius and not a SAAB.... coz I drive a loooot in the city and Toyotas are good.
What I don't know (or just refuse to accept) is why sooo many people rather buy a VW or a BMW for twice the price of a SAAB with the same features and YES... same quality.
I'm into cars and I have dealed with cars. I've got to know many cars and many members of my family work with cars for a living... and you know what? SAAB's were not bad quality cars, and average SAAB would give the same trouble as any VW or BMW. But people wanted the brand to show off and not the quality and features to enjoy. And the ones who don't think like that... simply didn't buy them coz someone said that the quality was bad for some reason I don't know and they don't even know them selves coz any "--PRO.--" would tell you the oposite.
I hear a colleague telling someone that he thinks that his brother is making a lot of money coz he bought a SAAB 9-3 ... and he has him-self a RENAULT that costs about the same as THAT SAAB.
People superficialism and SAAB's aparently non existing marketing dep. (now FOR SURE non existing) are the ones to thank.
Ok then. I'll take some snus and pray for all those who just lost their jobs.
My thoughts go out to all the SAAB employees worldwide. Having had two airlines I worked for go out of business, I feel your sadness and pain...especially at this time of year.
By the time Reinfeldt's government have finished with copying other's disastrous conservative policies they would have either sold off or resided over the disappearance of much of Sweden's heritage. The cronies around the government will do all right though.

These wonderful cars are maintained well enough, that my 2001 9-3 Viggen and 9-5 Aero Combi will be the last cars that I will be owning anyway. I will not be buy any Government Mandated (GM) cars again, as this is their agenda anyway.
Early in the year I warned the Swedish Ministers about the consequences of what would happen if today ever came. I hope for once that I am wrong. I feel really sad for all the fine people that I know, whom are associated with the company in Trollhattan.

I too have only owned SAABs for over 30 years and worked for 2 airlines that went bust!
I also worked for SAAB Aerospace in the heydays of the 80's.
I shall nurture and keep my 9000 Aero and 9-5 Aero for ever!
The number 1 problem that is ignored is that BMW/AUDI/MB, have all passed SAAB and left SAAB trailing in the wake of these companies.
This is what caused the demise of SAAB not GM, current range of GM cars are much better than the SAAB equivalent, at the volume for sales this year the end was inevitable. Its sad but true, to deny the above is not being honest.

As soon as they clear up this security problem, get the Swedish diplomat selling Pantyhose back from the Russian police, get the record snowfall brushed off the Global Warming conference to the South, lecture Israel about Palestien, lecture the US about Afganistan, force the Swedish Church to Ordain gays, etc, etc., THEY INTEND TO ADDRESS THE SAAB/UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEM.
Sweden will recover, regardless. Swedes have been in the business of recovering since their Viking ancestors genes from eons ago enabled them to do so.
Where will these jobs be replaced from? Look at the OMXS 30 and ask yourself where are the fledgling companies that will create new jobs. There are none! That is why the Social Democrats have always polled well, they create employment through the federal budget. I'm not saying the third way is wrong, but it aint market based capitalism!
Saab sold 93,295 vehicles globally in 2008, representing 1.1 percent of total GM sales volume, down 25 percent from 2007. The recession reduced this even further this year, along with the fact that consumers were aware of the potential collapse of the firm. Lets assume that sales could account for 125,000 again. If the company can be reduced in size to achieve economies of scale there would be no problems taking them back into profit again and returning to natural growth.
This could easily be done, but it would take a lot of work to get there, but it could be fixed.
If a market could be found for 125,000 sales per year, I can assure you that it can be made profitable, but only if it is run by the right people.
Blame GM if you want to (and if you want to show your ignorance), but Saab would have folded long ago had GM not stepped in and bought them after they had been on a losing track for years. Saab was one of a number of small-scale manufacturers that could not compete and Saab went looking for a buyer. GM stepped in and offered two things Saab wanted: 1) economies of scale that could make Saab a real global competitor and 2) a willingness to purchase only a 50% interest rather than a 51% controlling interest. Without the economies of scale, Saab would have priced itself out of business. Without GM, these jobs that are about to be lost would have been gone by 1990. I say, hats off to GM for keeping the factories running all this time...they could have moved manufacturing to Asia long ago. Heck, GM pumped many millions of dollars into Saab while it continued to lose money hand over fist.
Face facts, folks, Sweden is a mixed economy and the "evil" characteristics of free-market capitalism greatly enhance our quality of life. Imagine what life would be like here if all of our products were protected by quotas, subsidies, and tariffs. We'd pay even higher prices,have less selection, and what few things we would have in the stores would be sh*t quality. And you people would be the first (and loudest) to scream bloody murder. In my opinion, the factors that play the greatest role in depressing the local economies in Sweden are the least capitalistic in nature. I can deal with long, dark winters. What really depresses me is the low selection and high prices of goods. The reason Saab is headed for the gallows now is that it cannot compete and should not be supported. It is a loser, get over it. And get busy doing what all those Saab workers should have been doing all along: a service in which Sweden has a comparative advantage.
But Volvo might fare a little better. The New World Order might allow some of it to remain in Sweden. The key word of course is "might".
With the New World Order, one never knows for certain.

The selection and price of goods in this country suggests to me that retailers expect their customers to turn up.
Most of what you have griped about in this thread has little to do with Saab's downfall. You are merely throwing out a list of typical complaints against capitalism which, while true in many situations, are not the root causes of Saab's failure. People all over the world with the freedom to choose their brand of car simply refused to buy overpriced, poorly-designed Saabs. Plain and simple.
A penchant for breeding greed and corruption is not limited to capitalism. Indeed, corruption and greed are what destroyed the Soviet model. Greed is a human trait, not an economic one, and it certainly existed in Sweden before capitalism got a foothold. To think corruption and greed would disappear if Sweden became 100% socialist is naive at best.
The desire for a better life is what drives innovation. In this, Sweden can compete. Socialism, while full of certain dignities and advantages, is also filled with disadvantages. One of the reasons Sweden's economy and society have been so successful is their formula for combining a liberal brand of socialism with conservative capitalism. Take either of those ingredients away and Sweden would not be nearly the utopia you seem to envision. I get the impression that you are not aware of the freedoms you enjoy when you make purchasing decisions, nor where those freedoms come from. The moment they limit you to one or two crappy cars to choose from and charge you an arm and a leg for them, then I bet you would be screaming for better selection. Producers simply supply what consumers want. Is that so hard to understand?
In the end, Sweden is among the most educated, advanced, wealthy and free nations on earth. These characteristics should make Sweden very adaptable and able to succeed as the demands of the global economy change. There are tons of opportunities for Sweden to provide what the world wants and needs. Unfortunately, overpriced poorly-built automobiles are not a good option.
Oh, and as far as trading citizenships is concerned...no need. I already have both. And if your experience in that massive land of over 350 million people has led you to perceive it as a "land of gangsters, corporate business, toxic hatred, filled to overflow with dunces and lemmings," then you obviously have not gotten out much. Neither have you taken advantage of the wonderful array of opportunities that America offers you, opportunities being exploited every day by inventive, passionate, caring people all over the country. You should open your eyes a bit wider and look around. Then again, perhaps you are the type of person who would do better in a place where someone else is responsible for making sure you are taken care of. Good luck with that.

I live on the west coast of Sweden (a little further down than Trollhättan) and a lot of us know that the unions, over the years, have been so powerful there that there is little possibility to make a niche company like Saab profitable.
It´s really time that people realised how much the unions in Sweden are strangling businesses. A company like Saab wouldn´t be able to make any profitable decisions over the years without negiotating with the unions. It´s a crazy situation which 70 years of it has produced and it needs sorting out fast before more businesses close or move out.
I seemed to be the only person who could really sell them at the dealership. I was always surprised to hear the factory trained salesmen bragging about what great snow cars they were in Florida. I always sold them as a high end jeep, great on wet roads and Florida sand, with great power to weight ratio. Despite the fact that I was selling them, the /metro sexuals at SAAB got me transferred to the Lincoln side of the dealership.
Where I promptly became Lincoln's #1 salesman in the area. I will miss the little cars, but not the pretty boy management at SAAB, which destroyed the cars image in America as unmanly.
In the 70s on my visits to Sweden, I saw mostly Volvo and SAAB Autos

Now. Well there are not so many Swedish Cars in Sweden.
When You lose Your manufacturing Base ( Factories) and all the small Machine shops, because the Chinese can do the job cheaper, even with air freight included. that must be the tipping point.
We cannot at this time compete with the East. I have no bad
things to say about the Chinese, just that we will be forced to have a lower standard of living. That is the new world Economy I think. Merry Jul
