In the latest battle over what people may legally call their children, the Swedish Tax Authority (Skatteverket) has ruled that the parents of a two-month-old boy in Skåne in southern Sweden may not call their child Allah.

According to the decision, Skatteverket does not approve “names that can give offence or be seen to cause discomfort for the bearer”. In this case, Skatteverket was “of the opinion that the name can be seen as objectionable for religious reasons.”

Skatteverket legal expert Lars Tegenfeldt told The Local that devout members of the public might take offense to certain names with highly religious connotations.

“God or Allah or the Devil is offensive to the public. Not me personally, but there are religious people who think so,” he said.

“Some religious names though, like Jesus, are normal,” he added.

There have been several high profile cases in Sweden over the authority's seemingly arbitrary decisions regarding first names it deems acceptable.

In 2007, for example, a couple was initially banned from calling their daughter Metallica (a decision later overturned), while authorities in another part of Sweden allowed a baby boy to be called Google. Other controversial names rejected by the agency have included Q, Token and Michael Jackson.

The parents told The Local they do not plan to appeal the Skatteverket's decision rejecting the name Allah.

I think this people should think about the future of their kids. It will be a nightmare growing up with such a name as Metallica or Google or Allah. Come on people, is that what you want to give your child, a name that will cause just trouble. Imagine going to a job interview and having Google or Metallica on your CV, no one is going ot look at it.

I am keen to know that what kind of these parrents are who wants to give name Allah to their son. From which religion they belong and what are their purpose behind this ?

why people like these have rusts on their brains.

Sweden IS a nanny-state. Quit acting surprised that this happens.

If this is overturned and the kids name does end up being Allah just dont take a picture of him. Just ask you Danish neighbors what happens if you do.

Muslims the worse bit about it is they don't understand themselves the extreme of it all...

was speaking to a Muslim arab regarding religion and his said Mohamed comes before his own mother !!!

that just opened my eyes to how extreme there religion is and to never trust a race who believes such myths.

Personaly I would never name my son Allah or Google or God. But if some crazy lunatic wants to.... well, it's not my problem. Anyway, I have a biblic name as most of Spaniards do. Many Swedes, etc.

But still, Skatteverket is right in one thing:"names that can give offence or be seen to cause discomfort for the bearer"....and yes, people like Mr Beynch here would be able to do God knows what to the poor baby...hahahaha. Ohh, sorry I said God.

So why is Jesus allowed and no Allah? Jesus Christ why the double standard? Jacob, David, Jonas, are all religious names.. Jesus is G-d to many but yet they don't have a problem to approve that name? LOL

I have a name suggestion to for the little bugger.. Asmodai. ;-).
17:48 December 23, 2009 by Kaethar
@peropaco: Isn't it obvious? Names like Jesus and Mohammed are allowed but titles like God or Allah or Satan are not.
18:37 December 23, 2009 by TvAmazon
To me there is a big difference in the names Jesus and Allah. Has anyone ever heard a christians yelling Jesus is great while trying to murder people. Yet every month we hear of more muslims running around yelling Allah is great while trying to murder other christians or muslims.

I think the big difference is that christians are taught to love one another because we are all sinners. So christians are supposed to love sinners and rebuke the sins.

But many muslims are taught that murdering in gods name is a heroic act "Allah is Great". They are also taught the women and children are property and that it is ok to murder them if they offend their family. It's also ok to murder homosexuals.

The overall message from Jesus is very different (Love one another and treat others the way each of us would want to be treated). The Allah and Mohammed messaged is the opposite (Kill others if they do not do as you think they should do).

Jesus, according to the Christian tradition, is both man and god. So while naming a kid is no problem, naming it Jesus Christ would be.

The couple trying to name their kid Allah have a pretty transparent Islamophobic agenda. They're a bunch of agents provocateurs who will most certainly use this to show the Swedish state has been taken over by...you guessed it...Muslims. It's obvious. This story will be plastered all over Spencer-ish websites.
19:29 December 23, 2009 by testUserName
@TvAmazon

I suppose you have short memory... All this Islamophobia started after 9/11 and if you start looking at the brutality Christians had shown in the wars are far greater than what Muslims have done. Take an example of crusade, reflect what Christians did when they invaded Jerusalem and what Muslims did. What about world wars. Why you civilized people were messing around only few decades ago? Christians killing Christians and jews and saying love the sinners. huh!

@Beynch: So in 11th century you say didn't forgive sinners? When did you exactly amended the word of God? What had happened in world wars? Did you use amended version at that time?
21:01 December 23, 2009 by Qassim
In my simple perception, for many parents naming their new-born baby is an unknown gift from them to him/her. And hence, it is very essential that you choose a suitable name for your newborn baby, a name that won't cause him suffer or feel annoyed or isolated within his/her peer group.

Some of you have raised the question, "why Jesus is cool name but Allah is not". Well, Jesus is as human Moses and Mohammad and as well as Jesus was a prophet as Moses and Mohammad. He was surely a prophet though some of you may confront me with another notion that he was/is a God that was crucified in the manner of human being to omit your sins (for Christians)

Names like Moses and Mohammad are widely used within the Jews and Muslim communities. Particularly within the Muslim society, they name their kids Moses and Mohammad as well as Issah or Issa (which is the name Allah or God calls Jesus in the holly Quran). The point is that, you can name your kid a name that is related with creatures not the creator. We are just human beings, helpless, needy and never get sufficient with our lives in this world or the other, so that is why we are named the created, or creature however, there is a divine power that is omnipresent and omnipotent that exists. Technically we may have our own definitions for this supernatural being but we surely all have the same thinking that there is some mighty power behind the creation of the cosmos - the earth, the sky and all those in between including you that is reading this comment now.

With what capacity can you name your kid, which is the created with the creator's name, Allah or God? Whichever name you may call, God, Allah and so on. I think it is not intellectually cool to name your kid, the created with name (names) of the creator.

I am a Muslim as you can see in my name. If I name my kid I would name Abdallah which consists of two names - Abd = servant and Allah the creator of the creatures - cosmos or universe and all those in between. And that is how we Muslims name our kids. Moreover, we also name our kids all the biblical names, we don't have objection to all those names mentioned in the bible (both old testament and the new testament), though linguistically there might be very slight changes, for example, Jacob, we may say it this way - Ya'qub and so forth.

This comment is only for elaboration not to offend or start argument.

@Qassim: Some months ago, I use to think that members of this forum are well educated and we should just stick to the topic without getting to awkward situation but I was wrong. What you have said was said by many others but it didn't work. So instead of explaining and coming to a defensive position, i think its better to revert back with another question. Explain when people are really willing to listen to you but not on this forum. Trust me!

@testUserName

Ah ah ah ah! If you could read well at the bottom of the previous comment you wouldn't have responded to me. The way I explained things, are the way they really are in our societies. You are (have roots of) either a Christian, Jews or a Muslim and that is who you will always be, except from what you got as an inborn desire to interact with others - thinking outside the box and that depends on you bro....!!! Whether you listen to me or listen to others! That was what I was going to tell you, get it or not I am not concerned. I am not going to talk more on religious stuff and I don't want to waste my time with it.

Take the previous comment as an essential and even potentially a short course of human diversity if you are ready to be a student of human culture. Let's respect our diversity brother, if you don't respect mine expect no mercy from my side then, unless I am forgiving unlike you.
21:44 December 23, 2009 by Qassim
Guys! I thought you fully got my point but there still remains a room for understanding the point of my previous comment. A Muslim person does not name his son or daughter, "Allah". That is what a none-Muslim would have done to name his child Allah or God.

Get the point boys!

Yeah, sure, Sweden is a nanny state. Come to Australia and enjoy seeing games given the R18+ rating and be banned at the same time; and soon the internet will be filtered at ISP level. Or have a look at China or North Korea; now that is two nanny states.

It seems that you have been watching to many Hollywood or Swedish (ARN) versions of history that portray the musselman as defenders of the Holy Land. The First Crusade was waged by Pope Urban II after the Musselman invaded Jerusalem. At the behest of the Byzantine emperor the Church sent voluteers to repel the Seljuk Turk invaders. Not much has changed in the last thousand years. Muslims start it, civilized society has to apply a beat down.

I am frankly fed up with these jewish/christian sects running amok trying to cling onto power by use of some antiquated device usually in form of a holy book, containing mostly lies and a language defying its own grammar, indicating it to be a hotch potch product of misinterpretation.

We need to understand that Islam is a Christian sect and that the crusades was just one big fight between those who believed in the trinity and those who did not. That plus other idiotic ideas such as abolishment of interest, which inevitably leads to people living like vegetables or by plunder of thy neighbour. Yes, that pretty much sums up the fate of many of its brethern.

This is clearly proven by the first inscription on the al aqsa mosque. Read it remembering that Mohammed is not just a name but has the meaning The blessed one. Its a hymn to the profet Jesus nothing less.

@testUserName - I hate to have to give you a history lessen but neither of the World Wars had anything to do with religion. World War II was started because Hitler and the Germans did not like the hugh lose of land and very productive regions that were given to other coutries after World War I.

World War I was started because heir to Austria-Hungary throne was assassinated by a group from Serbia. The Austrians declared war on Serbia and the Russians stepped in to support Serbia. This lead Germany to support Austria. Then the domino effect kicked in with every European country supporting their allies. World War I was started and the fall out and consequences for Germany's lose lead to World War II.

@ Taxalien Islam is not a Christian Sect but based on completely different principles and different prophets. The Koran was re-written it the 1700's to include many of the same miracles the Jesus performed as evidenced by the previous copies lacking these texts in older copies of the Koran. The Bible on the other hand is the most documented old text in existence with very little variation.

The current wars are another matter. Muslims sneak attack on America was just like Japanese in World War II. Except the muslims were mostly thugs that had taken control of several counties.
09:05 December 24, 2009 by testUserName
@TvAmazon: why not following love the sinner at world wars too?? Christians have more bloody hands than other religions. So keep your school lessons with you.

@calebian22: who was the civilized world during crusades? Killing women and children are the act of civilized world? Why the heck Christian volunteers went for the revenge? Wasn't it a Jewish state to begin with (with your definition of first come, first serve) so Christian invaded it somehow? Why? Jews called Muslims in many occasions to save them from Christians. Christians were never civilized until the recently when industrial revolution started in West.

Moreover, you definition "beat down". Why did Christians ruled Muslim countries (in Africa and Asia) in the last century? What "reason" will you give now?
10:12 December 24, 2009 by Pengy
Why the hell would anyone want to be called Allah, anyways. Might as well name him "I believe in ghosts" or "I'm from the early years of mental development" or something.

The only reason would be to inflict intended controversity, so it's just as good that the little bugger didn't get to be called Allah. Allah, Jehova or whatever false, made up god you call you child after would only be in order to make a mockery out of the poor, sad people who actually believes in such silly things.
13:22 December 24, 2009 by wotist
Naming your child Allah seems rather unconsiderate towards the child if your an ethnic Swede. If you're not, then I really don't know. Maybe accepted tradition somewhere? According to a search on the SCB name database, there are already 19 women and 35 men with Allah as a given name in Sweden. I would presume then that these people already carried these names when they arrived in Sweden and thus come from a different tradition compared to the Swedish one regarding naming children.

I would like to answer TvAmazon, First I'd like to say that your comment was very very offensive, and as a muslim, I'll give myself the right to correct you, our religion does not say that we should kill whoever doesn't think the way we do, for your information, even in wars, It was forbidden for muslim warriors to kill women or children or old people, even men that are not willing to fight or running away of fear or unarmed, you might think this is strange but it was also forbidden to ruin trees or flowers or whatever they had in that time.

Islam does not allow killing at all, and from your comment I can tell that you don't know a single thing about the religion, It's actually all about forgiving and loving and living peacefully with other people from other cultures, I don't think anyone should be allowed to jusge this religion by any knowledge that is not based on Coran.

These terrorists that we hear about nowadays, these are brainwashed idiots without future plans, they may have lost all their family members and money and for such a sad person it's very easy to get them to do whatever these evil terrorists want them to, but it's totally against what Islam wants muslims to behave like.

@Beynch: we are enjoying our holidays but seems that you are in holiday category too. :p

I think its easier to solve the spelling of Quran than the trinity concept. Which birthday you are celebrating; son, father or holy spirit? Now please stop here and enjoy your holidays.
17:55 December 24, 2009 by mkvgtired
@testUserName, The crusades were a response to brutal and violent Muslim armies that were advancing into Europe and previously Christian lands. Also, in that time the majority of slaves in the Middle East were those captured from coastal European cities. Dont try to make it seem as if the Muslim armies were innocent victims. If they didn't think God was on their side in their attempt to take over the world the Crusades would have never happened.

After reading the comments above, I will not say more except that we as human being should respect the others no matter the differences or the opposition because what we are doing, saying is due to what media renders us. (If we want respect in return as its a natural rule....tit for tat) So this perception is wrong that the Muslims make trouble rather these are the Muslims who want to give the freedom to the whole world from the blackmailing politicians and traders so the Muslims are suffering. I have a proof of the devil involvement in our lives, just try to be fair / truthful in all of your life matters and then notice its results? One message for all in the form of questions: Can a judge give justice without hearing the parties (clients) in the court? Surely not, knowledge, evidences are necessary to give the decision, justice I mean. So please do care what the Muslims, the jews, the christians are doing in the world but before all this, must read their scripturs, they are not really long just 3 books. I wish you will be in the position of taking the right decision....fully based on standards, common sense, justice........but knowledge is the key for solutions. Please never never rely only on the media, as it was hijacked years ago. Also if you want to read Quran, ask the Muslim---for Bible ask the Christian,...for the trusted website so that to be not hijacked by the opponents. If one is serious to know the importance of life, must read the Bible, the Quran and the Torah so that one can make his present (mortal) and future (immortal) life as secured. Take care of your time before you miss the time forever, Good Luck for finding realities and truth. "No pain, no gain".
23:17 December 24, 2009 by Taxalien
I'm always laughing when one of these believers show up to tell me how tolerant their religion is, regardless of it be Jewish, Christian or Islam.

It's like saying that black is the new white.

A monotheistic religion can by definition not be tolerant, as opposed to any polytheistic religion. In a polytheistic religion it doesn't matter if you worship your navel or the big old oak behind the farmhouse, as it is by definition each to their own. All monotheistic religions however all have scores to be settled with anyone that shows up naming other deities as fully operational sources of inspiration in life. And all of them have taken it a serious business to deal with any such blashpemy, in the past or the present. Christians are quite good at this game, black is white. They will say how good they are, that they tolerate other religions. However, nothing can be farther from the truth. When the debate raged whether the state should be tolerant to all religions the Christians didn't just lie down or jump up in joy of such a brilliant idea, they fought it with all the hatefull rethoric they could muster. The west is tolerant because its politicans where enlightened, liberal and thus tolerant, not because the Catholics, Protestants or Orthodox thought they needed some fresh blood in the ecumenical debate.

Ridiculous. It depends on parents what name they prefer for their offspring. If one names "Christ"or Jesus,it hardly matters.Rather one may think it in a positive way.

Wetallica, says" I'll give myself the right.....Our religion doesn't say that we should kill whoever doesn't think the way we do....even in wars,it was forbidden for a muslim warriors to kill women or children or old people." Sahih BukhariVolume004,Book052 Hadith Number 256, Narrated By As-Sab-Bin-Jaththama , The prophet passed by me at a place called Al-Abwa or Waddan and was asked whether it was permissible to attack the pagan warriors at night with the probability of exposing their women and children to danger. The Prophet replied. "They (ie women and children)are from them(ie,pagan) I also heard the Prophet saying ."The institution of hima is invalid except for Allah and his Apostle" So what nonsense are you talking? From Quran Sura 9:111"Allah has purchased from the faithful their lives and wroldly goods and in return has promised them Paradise, they will fight for the cause of Allah, they will Kill and be Killed" Suras 2:244, 2:216, 3:56, 4:74, 4:89, 8:12, 8:57 all these suras and there are hundreds more violent suras in Quran,You muslims have been lying for centuries to non believers(Infidels) but NO more I say. Funny how nowadays we have all these self-proclaimed western theologists (surj) who known Islam better than the muslims

Let me ask u, did u stumble on those hadiths (which btw r out of context) accidentally and then realize how evil islam is? Or did u deliberately google for such hadiths to vindicate ur preconceived notions of Islam?

its a rhetorical question so dont under any circumstances feel obliged to answer

am pretty sure deep down everybody on this forum knows the answer, even if we r 2 prejudiced 2 admit it
06:42 December 27, 2009 by Sashland
Funny how nowadays we have all these self-proclaimed peaceful muslins who still try to cover up the truth of their cult.

And, no, I'm no expert at all, but I can read, and Robert Spencer at

http://www.jihadwatch.org/

compiles authoritative teachings from world-leading experts, those from INSIDE islan, following the teachings over centuries, that give the complete and unvarnished reality of the repression, hatred, and hostility that is contained in its "teachings".

Take a look at

http://www.thereligionofpeace.com/

to get a feel for the breadth and depth of the assault.

We are fighting deception used as a tool of war. Don't take my word for it: educate, and protect, yourself and your family.

Since their book "teaches" them to use deception when necessary to spread their control, being forewarned is being forearmed. sharia law is their goal, learn about it and its tragic implications. Then warn others.
09:23 December 28, 2009 by EarleyDaysYet
OK, firstly "muslin" is a type of cloth. Secondly, why argue about who did what to who? History can't be changed. My interest is in going forward, in which extremists of all stripes need to be reviled. Moderate Muslims, of which I know many, are always protesting that Islam is a religion of peace -- so, fight back against those who fight and kill women and children in your name. If moderate Islam stands up to the fanatics, it will send a conclusive message to the world that they do not represent your faith. Christians, push back against right-wing evangelicalism which makes it mandatory to be a hide-bound, black-and-white, bigot and homophobe. Don't let the most vocal represent who you are -- don't let the world think that Westboro Baptist & Glenn Beck & Fred Nile & Rush Limbaugh are the public face of all of you.

By definition, those who shout the loudest get the most attention - if you don't agree with how the vocal minority are displaying or distorting your belief system, say so. Make your dissent heard. Give people the option of believing you're not all fundamentalist nutters, by presenting them with an alternative.

So endeth the sermon. :-)
