Four-year-old Maryam Ali Abdulhadi, who disappeared on New Year's Eve in Malmö in southern Sweden, is with all likelihood alive and well in Iraq, the Skåne police said in a statement.

The girl disappeared just after midnight on New Year's from Gustav Adolfs square in central Malmö while in the care of her aunts. They called the police after unsuccessfully searching for her in the crowd for 30 minutes.

Police said that on Saturday they received “information that confirms that the missing girl is in good health and with all likelihood in Iraq.”

Maryam's mother has spoken with individuals in Iraq and has even been allowed to speak with her daughter.

The girl and both of her parents are foreign citizens. The girl has been living with her mother in Sweden while the father is in Iraq.

The mother told Norwegian newspaper VG that the girl's father called her and told her what had happened. He said that the girl was okay, but she would be living with him.

Police are continuing to investigate how the girl was abducted and by whom.

Its a good move by the girl's father. child's mother seem to have astrayed mentally. For children its very necessary that they have their own culture and religion to live with. Later on she can come back to Sweden. But I think girl's mother seem to have other'interest' of life more than looking after her child.
14:36 January 3, 2010 by Michael84
So anyone could kidnap a kid and take his/her to Iraq or Yemen or somewhere out of the country easypeasy!!? Jesus only you can protect our children!!

@glamshek: "For children its very necessary that they have their own culture and.." Listen pal individual's culture and religion is the one they pick not the one that their parents choose for them. In my humble opinion this among the others differentiate humans from other form of life on this planet.
15:31 January 3, 2010 by calebian22
Glamshek,

astrayed mentally? I must have missed that in the article.

What makes the father's interests more important? Oh wait, I forgot that the father's culture is based in the cradle of civility and modern thinking. My mistake to put western values above this man's clearly superior culture and value system that allows for kidnapping.
16:19 January 3, 2010 by Baned
So the girl was kidnapped by the father. It's still kidnapping! My heart goes out to the mother that has to deal with such a terrible incident in this way. Hopefully there is a civil way to resolve all this without putting even more stress on the child.
16:42 January 3, 2010 by peropaco
Gosh, it seems like kidnapping a child in Sweden and hopping on a flight is like a walk in the park.. What about passport check, authorization from both parent to leave the country etc? The kidnappers probably had different names than the little girl's on their travel documents so how did they manage to pull that off? I know! They saw two guys and a little girl with thick colliding eyebrows and names like Talal Abdudlelay Mustafa Yusuf and the immigration officer could not bother with all those names and just let them out.
17:12 January 3, 2010 by pyruvicacid
@Glamshek,

hmmm, sound's like you completely missed the point here. You're overlooking the fact the kid was kidnapped- and then suggest it's for her own good since she'll be raised within her culture and religion? you sound like on of those idiots who send their daughters back to Somalia for circumcision. It funny how a narrowly minded, ignorant individual such as yourself takes advantage of all the benefits given by westernized societies, lack appreciation for it and continue with your ideological fervour.
18:14 January 3, 2010 by Chuy
@everyone

I don't think Glamshek missed the point, I think that was a thinly veiled, "Go back to your own country with your own religion, so we don't have to deal with another foreigner." I think his/her comments would be completely different if the mother was Swedish.
19:30 January 3, 2010 by olive_tree
@ peropaco : authorization from both parent to leave the country etc?

Since when this is required here? I did travel before with m daughter, no one has asked me for that? we have another trip soon, and can not afford to lose my tickets, hope you can inform me. thanks
20:02 January 3, 2010 by Jimmy
why is being called "kidnapping" no where is it mentioned who has custody of the child. Sole or Joint never mentioned perhaps the father was enforcing a court order of his own country that the mother ignored and the swedish government refused to help.
20:16 January 3, 2010 by olive_tree
No comments from my side, The story should be full to be able to judge, The father has the right to give his opinion too, then we can judge.

just i wish the little girl some peace, that's all
20:51 January 3, 2010 by fridayz
what ever the fathers story, a little girl deserves to stay with her mother... a man who is capable of kidnapping a child is capable of what else?

MY heart is with the mother and her little girl... I imagine the mother looking at her toys around ..... GOD
21:34 January 3, 2010 by peropaco
@ olive_tree

When traveling with a child within the EU they are a lot more flex but from personal experience I was about to take my child to California on vacation and they asked for my wife authorization as well as her personal number...
21:35 January 3, 2010 by Jimmy
Fridayz what a load of rubbish. So a mother is the only parent capable of looking after a child?

Typical comment throughout Sweden. Equality and non discrimination as long as it is favour of the female.

Swedish mothers kidnap the children as well, read about George Peros and the trouble he faced when the Swedish mother kdnapped their children and went against Swedish and Australian courts.

Who says that the mother didn't kidnap her and the father is following the law.

No of course the mother is not at fault
21:40 January 3, 2010 by Playmaker
so fridayz if it was a little boy then he deserves to stay with with the father? maybe she kidnapped her from him? i just wonder how does she get to iraq? if she was reported missing then her passport should of been flaged. just seems fishy. i bet the tickets were pre booked and there is a insider. how does one pic out a girl in a big crowd then kidnap her with out her screaming for her life. maybe the aunt???
21:55 January 3, 2010 by Jimmy
it was reported that the mother spoke with her daughter, yet the mother didnot say that child wanted to come back to her.

if she is in iraq then she had to have a passport so reasonable to assume that the father had a passport for his daughter. And yes if it was suspected that the father had taken the child illegally i don't think there a that many flights direct to iraq in the early hours of the morning.

Sounds like the mother did wrong firstly and now is trying to get sympathy from the fridayz of sweden
22:35 January 3, 2010 by JoeSwede
When you live in Sweden or are on Swedish soil you should live by the laws of Sverige.

I feel for the family but the right thing is for Iraqis themeselves to push for changes in their society within Iraq.

Sweden and Scandinavia as a whole needs to develop a thicker set of regulations that will allow it to allow it to relate to what is quickly becoming our greatest partners, Iraq, Iran & Somalia.
23:04 January 3, 2010 by fridayz
Jimmy and Play maker,

What I mean is that if the father demand was legal why he didn't act legally? Is it difficult for you to understand?!!! and it doesn't matter if the child is a boy or a girl a child at her age needs mother even though she doesn't cry for it.

JoeSwede, I would not point on nationalities here, I don't know anyone from Iraq but it seems they are in a very hard condition , people are being killed everyday in Somalia so they seek for asylum here.... however is not for me to judge.

Iranians though are different I suppose, my doctor here in vardcentral happen to be an Iranian and she is brilliant... I have some Iranian colleagues and in my surprise they are not religious at all,.. they don't seem to be asylum seekers they are more skillful immigrants I believe (at least the people I know!)
23:45 January 3, 2010 by Jimmy
fridayz at what age does a child need their father????

Not reported if father has or has not gone through legal procedure and swedish authourities are not that quick to assist a father in these cases.

no comment from you that perhaps the mother acted illegally

just a thought for you , you have a father or you wouldn't be here. What age did you need your father 21????????
23:57 January 3, 2010 by J Jack
Of all the bad stories to come over the holiday, this one gripped me the most. As father of a Swedish 4 year old myself, I was up all night worried fro the well being and paining over the possible suffering this missing child might be going through. We can only breath a sigh of relief that she in fact was confirmed alive and well and not having frozen to death in a locked garage or a canal. Her status doesn't allow Swedish Police to just bring her back. The stupidity of having her celebrate after midnight in an open and overcrowded place is overshadowed by the even greater stupidity of having her relocated to a country that is embroiled by war. This is a power struggle fought by individuals across borders for which they have no respect. Shame on the Police and the customs for not issuing and immediate AMBER alert with photo's everywhere and not preventing this child victim from being uprooted in this way! Borders and airports should have been locked down and surveilance should have been stepped up. She could have been intercepted.
01:58 January 4, 2010 by Michael84
@Joe swede: The last part of your comment isn't clear at all on a separate note i agree with "on Sweden's soil, Swedish laws"
02:09 January 4, 2010 by pathfinder.uppsala
I just do not understand how can some one take that baby girl out of Sweden so easily !!??

Where was the authority?

administration and police or something !!??

it is so scary !

Do we live in a first world country !!??
05:48 January 4, 2010 by Playmaker
well at least the fathers loves her enough to put a plan together to do this for what ever reasons. cant say for sure but maybe she broke the law by taking her here. like you said when in iraq it is iraqs laws or does that only work for the western countries? my cousin is in Basara iraq right now and it is not as bad as tv makes it out to be. think of how many people live there and how big it is. the US loses more to car wrecks a year then iraq.
22:27 January 4, 2010 by moaca
O her father loves her allright. That is why he had to abduct his kid (a 4 year old should be in bed with new years eve at that time as they are to young to comprehend what is going on anyway) and have her dragged over to wonderful Iraq. Every day here I see on tv the suicide attacks and bombings goind on in that country. Unfortunately this war was started by the yanks with a little help from the Brits. I live in the UK and I think the coverage is slightly different then in Sweden. Its war over there, no question about it. I just feel sorry for her because in her young life she had a glimpse of freedom and now she is doomed to be some guys slave later on.

And dont tell me that women have rights in that country because I dont believe that. And this goes for every country where there is muslim domination. As a female you are merely there to serve, full stop. This is not stated in the Quran (Koran) where the profet states respect for both genders, but inflicted by religious fanatics. Poor kid!
22:42 January 4, 2010 by morchad
@#21 there is a big thing called Öresunds bridge connecting Sweden to Denmark......and the whole EU thing i.e. free movement of people goods & services and a thing called the Schengen agreement so someone could fill a truck with children and drive right out of the country. I guess the parents/guardians are supposed to be responsible for the safety of their kids.
06:17 January 5, 2010 by CanadianInSweden
i would almost bet that i could get in a car and drive from göteborg to baghdad and not have my passport checked once...MAYBE the turks, but not likely,i trained from sofia to istanbul with no checks
23:52 January 7, 2010 by Canada_Girl
@ glamshek - Well, it's obvious you're an Arab by your comment. Guess what, pal. women can take care of children too, and much better than men, in many respects. Why is the mother not a good woman?... is she getting uppity and thinking for herself?

Nothing like taking the little girl to a war torn area, where she'll be cattled out to the first knuckle-dragging neanderthal as soon as she gets her period and end up with four kids by the time she's 22. What a great life that'll be.
