Icebreakers do battle with Swedish waters

All but one of Sweden's icebreakers have been called into action as half of the Gulf of Bothnia separating Sweden and Finland freezes over.

With meteorological agency SMHI forecasting more cold weather for the coming weeks, the big freeze seems set to stay.

Even Skagerrak, Kattegat and Öresund, waterways off the west and south-west coasts that are generally spared the ice treatment, risk freezing over as the cold snap continues.

"At the moment it's so gusty that new ice hardly has time to settle. But the waters have really cooled down, so if the wind eases off it could happen quickly," said Johny Lindvall, deputy head of shipping at the Swedish Maritime Administration (Sjöfartsverket).

Six of the agency's seven icebreakers have already been put to work, with the seventh, Ymer, ready for action at the end of the week. One of the icebreakers, Ale, is currently assisting in the northern Kvarken area in the Gulf of Bothnia but may be redirected to Lake Vänern should the need arise.

The last time the Gulf iced over so far south was in 2006 when the freeze stretched as far as Oskarshamn and the Swedes enlisted the help of their Danish neighbours, whose icebreakers had remained quayside for the previous fifteen years.

"We leased their icebreaker Danbjörn," said Johnny Lindvall.

"They were very enthusiastic. We called on a Friday and the Danbjörn arrived at Oskarshamn on the Tuesday. The only thing was that none of those on board had ever been out in the ice before, not even the captain. So we had to put an old icebreaker captain on board as supervisor. But then everything went fine," he added.

Good story. We have icebreakers here on the Great Lakes, so it's good to see a report of similar efforts in Sweden.

Another wonderful example of "global warming". Last year was abnormally warm and not snowy in Stockholm; this year is it abnormally cold with much snowfall. Sounds like Mother Earth is playing tricks with the environmentalists who continue to spout BS about global warming.
20:12 January 4, 2010 by planethero
yeah but check the CO2 these things produce.

they use icebreakers all over the world, most things do exist outside the US

Polar bears cry when the swedes crush ice.

Please, think of the polar bears. And Al Gore.

Maybe mother earth is cooling things off so she can clean herself of some of the polution.

Could have done with some of those icebreakers at a party in Stockholm the other night. Talk about boring.

These extra cold temps are a thorn-in-the-side for Al Gore and the rest of the loons.

'Climate change' is a more accurate and less misleading term to use than 'global warming' to explain the worldwide disruption in weather and climate.

Only people who don't know what they're talking about refer to the changes as global warming now.
02:01 January 5, 2010 by Investor612
"Climate change" was the convenient term invented when it became increasingly apparant the recent warm period that began in the 1970's ended in 1998. "Climate change" is a meaningless term whereby any unusual weather gets blamed on manmade emissions to be convenient in pursuit of the larger political agenda.

"Green" is the new "Red."
05:19 January 5, 2010 by saab
Yes, Investor612, so very true. Here in the States, the "climate changers" used to cite the hurricanes in the Gulf as a sign of the apocalypse. Last year... no hurricanes. Big Al Gore, is that you crying? Oh and when we have tornadoes in the Midwest in Spring, it's climate change too. Here's a funny interaction I had last week

Me: Gee, it is cold out there! Six degrees! (-14C). Where is that global warming?

Friend: What are you kidding? Were it not for global warming, we would also have 16 feet of snow out there!

So, you see, the climate changers are not only like the Reds, they are anti intellectuals who have bought bogus science (because of course they all took one science course in college... or was it high school?) and KNOW THE TRUTH. Having spent more than 6 months in Sweden taught me several things: nature is still beautiful, social contracts between the people and the government are still possible as long as both sides buy into it fully and... group think is a bad thing. Stay warm everyone!
08:57 January 5, 2010 by Luckystrike
When will people learn that global warming in no way means that you will have warmer winters. Go educate yourselves before making silly comments.

Global warming, aka climate change is very real and has been happening for hundreds of thousands....heck...millions of years. Fact! Never before though, have us stupid simple primitive humans dug up and released millions of tons of carbon into the atmosphere over the past 60 years. Fact! Dont even try and argue that point. Hence making climate change accelerate at unpredictable rates with extreme side-affects.

Common, it's about time for you old ignorant folk on TL to retire to the old age home and let the younger, smarter and obviously more intelligent people discuss these issues.

What about reading something _scientific_ about the "global warming"?

www.greatglobalwarmingswindle.co.uk

There is a video on google too: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5576670191369613647#

This movie has already some time ago proved to be a fraud. Previous BS films by Martin Durkin shown on Ch4 in the UK have even forced Ch4 to issue prime time appologies for the rubbish they aired.
11:09 January 5, 2010 by Grippen
Yes - the old version of the movie had few doubtful/weak points, but still it is a great introduction about the "global warming" bullshit.

Then - the greatglobalwarmingswindle.co.uk website has a list of scientifically proven facts with references to scientific articles. Try to beat those.

12:46 January 5, 2010 by Grippen
So? An article as old as the original version of the movie and still addresses just few picked points.

Isn't Greenland called Greenland because back then in the X century it was substantially warmer than now?

Haven't you been outside lately? It is kind of chilly and hmm, there is a lot of weird white stuff of on the ground - couldn't that be snow?
12:50 January 5, 2010 by Stormysmoker
@Luckystrike

Once again a "global warming" warrior has to rely on insults because there is no knowledge behind his thinking!

When are they goiing to learn that it's all a big con by governments and businesses to get us to make changes that they want rather than anything that we need to do. CO2's not even a significant greenhouse gas .

All worship Al Gore's wonderful hockey stick!!!!
13:28 January 5, 2010 by Luckystrike
@ Grippen, regarding Greenland. Interesting point however it seems very untrue, although lower parts of Greenland during the summer may have been a little green during the summers. Temperatures have been the same there since 600AD. A theory is the Erik the Red ( A Danish I think, Viking) named it Greenland to attract people in order to rob and slaughter them I guess. The fact is Greenland was never called Greenland because it was ever green and warm. Why is Iceland called Iceland ?

Another point, think climate change, not global warming. Global warming aka climate change can result in much lower temperatures and a lot more snow.

@Stormy..whatever

If this was a big con by Governments and business, why will America not sign any treaty capping Co2 emissions ? Your argument makes no sense. Did Gore hit you over the head with his stick?

Although obviously, Governments will use climate change as an excuse to tax us even more, that's obvious.
14:54 January 5, 2010 by CarlBlack
@ Luckystrike: If your only statement is that climate changes in time, that's definitely something everyone would agree. But the debate is typically about man-made climate change, so the question is what man-made climate change advocates really predict, warming or cooling?

Maybe the best is not to predict anything, then you cannot be proven wrong :-)
15:30 January 5, 2010 by Luckystrike
If you think of climate change as...lets say, the Amazon jungle. All species and plants live together in harmony, everything has a reason and a purpose. If I buy a tiny exotic plant from China and plant it in the Amazon, it's a good chance it will unbalance everything and devastate the jungle eventually. The same can be applied in many examples.

In the same way, climate change is as I hope we can agree, a fairly natural occurrence, and has been for hundreds of thousands of years. All of a sudden, in a very very short amount of time, the human race, develop rapidly and start using fossil fuels ( Which earth has naturally been cleaning out of the atmosphere for millions of years ). Even though it's a overall small percentage, 7% lets say, and now it's no longer the jungle but the entire world, can you really say that what we are doing to the atmosphere, the planet, even though it's a tiny proportion has no affect on the weather/atmosphere ?

With my above valid example, is it possible that Newton's third law be applied? Every action no matter how small or big has an equal and opposite reaction.

I don't predict anything at all, im no scientist. I only expresses my views.
19:26 January 5, 2010 by pearldrummer
Seeing as I seem to have started this debate I'd just like to say that whether you believe in Climate Change / Global Warming or not, it still makes sense to conserve energy and use less of the earth's resources, it's not only good for the environment and the future it's good for your pocket!
23:20 January 5, 2010 by Da Goat
Good on you Pearldrummer we should be caring for our environment.

It is a terrible shame that stupid people believe the bogus science HOAX of man made global warming climate change

all one needs to ask is a few simple questions

Q like where did all the carbon come from ?

A It was all up here on the surface at one time and CO2 levels were 100s of times greater than now !

Q Is CO2 a light gas or does it sink down onto the ground?

A do some experiments or visit a volcano and see if you suffocate!

Q do plants collect C02 like people collect money?

A you bet!

Q is the sky a big place?

A yes it is a bit bigger than earth!

so in short look after the earth but don't believe all the crap that is forced down your throat not so luckystrike as the climate change thing is half bull and the other half s--t
09:01 January 6, 2010 by CarlBlack
@Luckystrike: The point is that climate changes also by itself (and also the jungle: new species evolve), that's part of the evolution. And nobody has yet proven that man-made CO2 has made any change that wouldnot happen without it.
15:02 January 6, 2010 by Prionace Piaggio
It is amusing to see the climate change - fact or fiction? - debate can spark such a strong response for people. None of us (and that includes all those making the above polarised comments) are experts. We merely take the pieces of information that best suit our arguements from the so-called experts on either side of the debate.

My work specifically is about ships and their technology, and I have seen the efforts made to make vessels more efficient. This is done for two reasons - fuel prices and image. Icebreakers need over-powered engines to break the ice and to propel their extra heavy weight (many are also very old). CO2 emissions therefore are relatively high. Other ships are cleaner of course. But we need all of them (more or less).

But having fuel efficient ships that can gain some of their power from non hydrocarbon sources will increasingly be a necessity as the oil reserves are running out and oil will be getting more expensive (and most ships can not yet use LNG). THis is happening just as quickly as the climate change doomsdayers say we have time to act.

So bring back nuclear powered shipping I say and lets all glow with pride (or is this also a no no for environmnetalists still?).
