A 39-year-old Finnish man is being held by Swedish police on suspicion of murder after a witness reports seeing him throw a fellow passenger overboard.

The usual party atmosphere onboard the Viking Line ferry Mariella was doused in the early hours of Monday morning following the incident.

The Maritime Rescue Centre (Sjöräddningscentralen) was alerted when a man was reported to have fallen overboard as the vessel sailed south of the island of Utö in the Baltic Sea.

The ferry was on its way to Stockholm and continued its voyage as rescue attempts were made. A sea helicopter was dispatched to the scene but failed to recover anyone from the water.

Swedish police were at the harbour when the ferry docked at the Stockholm terminal on Tuesday evening.

”We assume it was murder,” police commissioner Bengt Carlsson told newsagency TT. ”The man is suspected on reasonable grounds.”

A male witness told police he saw the man being thrown overboard by a fellow passenger.

”He saw two men talking out on the deck which seemed harmless enough but then suddenly this happened,” Carlsson added.

The witness and two men were questioned and the 39-year-old was taken into custody at around 18.40 on Tuesday. The second man is not believed to be a suspect at this stage.

Police have conducted a forensic investigation of the ferry and lengthy video footage from security cameras is being reviewed.

They are now appealing to passengers who could have witnessed the incident and are liaising with Finnish police over the matter.

As the incident took place in Finnish territory the man could be handed over to Finnish authorities who could lead the the ongoing investigation.

Wow, it was about this time last year, that my girlfriend and I took that trip over to Helsinki. It was quite a lot of fun. I remember being out on the deck having a smoke and wondering if some drunkard fell off, if they could make it to the shores.

Quite sad this man was thrown over, but I guess my answer is no. You see I played water polo and swam competitively so really, I was wondering if I could make it... still probably not (in these temperatures).

And....won't this man feel stupid, if Finland has harsher murder laws. He'll be like, "damn, if I had waited 20 more minutes on the ferry, I'd be out in 2 years instead of 20!!"

You would be dead in 60 seconds you fool. Your muscles would seize up in that sort of cold and you would sink. Not forgetting the panic factor.

Since this took place just south of the island of Utö, I'm shocked to think that this forms part of Finnish waters. It is only about 16 kms off the Stockholm county coastline!

The Utö in question is not in Swedish waters.

You give them booze and they either rape some drunk teenage girl or the throw their mate over board for refusing to buy the last round. I thought the purpose for drinking was to enable Scandinavians an outlet and only opportunity to speak and communicate with each other,.. and not to rape and kill..

What about those Russians who go skinny dipping every year in the cold. I think it's for a festival where they celebrate the defeat of the teutonic knights or something They come out ok eventhough the water is so cold.

I'm surprised that the swedish goverment hasnt instituted a measure that the deck doors be locked after hours anyways. All my friends howl how you don't go ouside at night on a f-boat.

The government is there to save us from ourselves, right?
