Karolinska Institutet, Uppsala University and Stockholm University have made the grade in a new list of the world’s top 100 higher education establishments.

In the recently published Academic Ranking of World Universities, conducted by Jiao Tong University in Shanghai, Karolinska Institutet came top of the class for Sweden in 50th place.

Karolinska is one of Europe’s largest medical universities and celebrates its 200th jubilee this year.

Founded in 1477, the country’s oldest educational institution, Uppsala University, came in 76th place while Stockholm University was ranked 88th.

US universities dominated the top 20 with Ivy League stalwarts Harvard and Stanford taking the top two places respectively.

The best placed Nordic seat of learning was awarded to Copenhagen University which took 43rd place.

The annual list was first published in 2003 and is highly reputed within academic circles around the world.

The rankings are based on criteria including research performance, number of Nobel Prizes won by alumni and staff and other accolades including articles published in scientific journals.

I am suprised Karolinska and Copenhagen are not higher up the ranking. I am also suprised not to see Lund there.

There reseach base are extremely good and competes with the worlds best.

These things are always very US biased, their methodology is based along the lines American unis try to achieve whilst European universities generally try to improve themselves in other ways.

But meh, nobody pays too much attention to these things. Generally unis in Sweden can just be divided into whether you went to a 'proper' university or a hogeschool.

Karolinska do a great job given the limited funding received. Biomedical research is expensive and very competitive. Karolinska could be in the top 10 if slightly more investment was made!

Last time I checked, Stanford was not in the Ivy League.

Well, not surprised that Harward got on the top again, after all they just added one more Nobel to their list of accomplishments by the @$$kissing Norwegian Nobel Committee...

I'm puzzled as to why this is considered new. These rankings were published several months ago.

Even the hyperlink provided by The Local, does not include Standford in the Ivy League. Funny.

Every bad thing said or reported about Sweden is America's fault. Its Propaganda.

Really?

I would also tend to agree that there could likely be a bias for Englisn speaking universities.

well, guys. how would you evaluate this->

1. A Harvard, Stanford, MIT or CalTech graduate don't have to worry about job (even an IIT graduate from India too, they are instantly hired by big MNCs)

2. I have seen many Stockholm University graduates unemployeed. International students studying there find hard to get job across europe and even in their home country.

So, how would you rate this? US universities deserve the positions they have achieved. I can see many jealous europeans here.

I can't trust this university ranking, 2010 top university ranking Lund University ranked 67th most advanced in Swedish university according to well-known source. It's pretty different between research institute makes university ranking except US part.

What do you think about Chalmers? and Goethburg University? Do they match high standards? I like your opinion.

I've got to say, having gone through college here in the U.S., that the Universities are seriously high class. The major problem is the cost of tuition--it's sad to see how much debt students rack up just to get a degree.

My university--which didn't even make the top 125--is truly a great school nonetheless.

But I've got to admit that elementary and high schools in the U.S. are another matter.
