Swedish businessman Roger Akelius is to donate 100 million kronor over a 25-year-period to a children’s charity in the wake of Haiti’s devastating earthquake.

The charity SOS Barnbyar was overwhelmed when they heard the news.

“It’s the biggest amount of financial support from one donation we have ever had,” charity head Marcus Norberg told newspaper Svenska Dagbladet.

The money is to be used to support and educate around 400 Haiti children who live in two separate villages where the charity has set up facilities to help homeless and orphaned kids.

The villages are situated close to Port au-Prince and Cap Haïtien in the northern part of the country.

Akelius, who currently lives in the Bahamas, explained that with his property and insurance businesses booming, his impending 65th birthday prompted him to plan how his money will be used in the future.

“Because I live fairly close to Haiti I have been carefully following the events unfold and what is happening with the children in connection with the earthquake,” he said.

While the charity is receiving donations for immediate and emergency assistance, Akelius' millions will be used to the long-term benefit of children cared for in these two SOS-Barnbyar villages.

“It means we can help them even more and offer high school education which we aren’t always able to do,” added Marcus Norberg.

It's comforting to know that there are still people in the world who use their money charitably instead of wasting it on war and devastation.

Good marketing, Akelius! Now you can earn little bit more money. Roger Akelius = capitalist with moral ? NO, he is only greedy man trying to purify his soul.
19:36 January 17, 2010 by dsclimb
Vinja, I presume your just waiting for a flight out there to help the people yourself? It's a generous gesture, he could have left it to his relatives, or wasted it, instead he is going to help 1000s of people. Who cares if he gets PR from it, if he gains personally, then perhaps he might give even more in the future. Other people who can spare some funds should be encouraged to do the same.
21:38 January 17, 2010 by Vinja
Akelius should give much more, its a matter of course....So you, dsclimb, think that when rich people get richer, poverty/social injustice will disappear,hmm...Wondering if he had given the money without expectation to get something back = Generosity. Sorry, but I dont think so. Anyway, 100 million kr is only pocket money for him. Its the same phenomenon, when somebody gives money to poor people on the street, some euros/ kr here and there and then think they feel better. How easily one can deceive oneself ?
21:58 January 17, 2010 by dsclimb
vinja, who cares, the important thing is that those people who need it, will get some money.

You clearly have some personal issues over other peoples wealth and beliefs etc.. I fail to see how you lack the heart and slander someone who has given money to those in desperate need of help. Even if it's only .1% of his wealth, does it matter? NO. I think that perhaps you need to cleanse your soul for the things you have said about those who are helping others. Get back under your bridge.

He gave more that the whole of China...

Despite the lack of diplomatic relations, related Chinese government departments and rescue groups have been told to help out and provide humanitarian aid in the paralyzed nation. Thus far, China has:

■Donated $1 million USD in emergency aid to Haiti through the China Red Cross Society. Which, incidentally, is the same amount Brangelina has contributed.

■Sent a 60-strong rescue team to the earthquake site. The team, which consists of search and rescue personnel with years of experience and three sniffer dogs, departed yesterday night.

■The Center for Consular Assistance and Protection under the Foreign Ministry will provide 24-hour consultation service. We're not sure what that's for, but it sounds helpful.

Also, eight soldiers of China's 125-strong peacekeeping force in Haiti, which had been deployed there last June to help with ongoing peacekeeping efforts in the tumultuous nation, were said to be buried under debris. Ten more are still missing.

@Vinja: "Anyway, 100 million kr is only pocket money for him. Its the same phenomenon, when somebody gives money to poor people on the street, some euros/ kr here and there and then think they feel better. How easily one can deceive oneself ?"

Well it is like they say, no good deed goes punished.

I´ve heard plenty of amazingly tedious, pointless whining on this web site, but this one really takes the cake.

Vinja why the scepticism??? It's so sad that an individual cannot give a small portion of their wealth to a disaster zone without it being met with this kind of crap. You are without doubt the leader in the clubhouse of stupid comments on TL

"Giving money" to Haiti is a poor solution. Haiti, being the most corrupt, disorghanized, and poverty stricken country in the Western Hemisphere is as close as one can get to having a non-function government. And this is BEFORE the earth quake hit. Any money sent there would immediately end up in the deep pockets of Haitian henchmen. Instead the civilized 'west` must pour in construction material, medical equipment, food, trucks, earthmoving equipment and the like. But do NOT send cash! It would be a useless effort.
19:56 January 18, 2010 by israeli
yeah right. what the dieing children of haiti need now is "long term" aid. right?

israel on the other hand is operating the only facility that saves life in haiti itself- the only hospital that actually saves life. also there is a whole unit of rescue engineering that already rescued poeple from within the ruins. and what did the swedish government does?

to quote your own "the local" -

The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (Myndigheten för samhällsskydd och beredskap - MSB) said on Wednesday it will be sending two people "as early as tonight" to support United Nations Disaster Assessment & Coordination (UNDAC) teams on their way to Haiti.

2 poeple. that's all?

the second and final article in "the local" about sweden help is this "long term" aid that was mentioned.

it could be a laugh if it wasnt so sad. little israel is helping while sweden is refusing to help a nation that was devastated by nature. a shame on you.
21:06 January 18, 2010 by Vinja
So I am heartless bitch with stupid and pointless comments and Akilus is a generous capitalistangel ? Ok, if you think so... Charity is and has historically always been a 'way' to mitigate ones quilty conscience. Many people as Bill Gates, Warren Buffet

et c have give billions kr to cherity. However,in a larger perspective the money don't change ANYTHING. The best measure to remove poverty/injustice in the world is so radical that people with good living standard would never voluntarily agree to it.

How many lives had been saved in Haiti in that case ?

haha, poor 'Little Israel', trying to save the world.
