A workplace spat at a McDonald’s in central Sweden spilled over onto the internet last week, prompting an angry reaction from union representatives after the details of a worker’s sacking were detailed on Facebook.

The chain of events started with a blog post published by a disgruntled employee at a McDonald’s restaurant in Örebro.

The entry didn’t sit well with the woman’s supervisor Andreas Kenson, who fired her last Tuesday and then wrote about the episode on his Facebook page.

“…just fired a girl who blogged really negatively about her workplace…not that smart to make up a bunch of stuff just to give friends a laugh…but now I’m chuckling in any case…=0)),” Kenson wrote in an entry on the popular social networking site.

A representative for the hotel and restaurant workers union lashed out at the public airing of an internal personnel matter, calling it “extremely inappropriate”.

“It shows poor judgment,” Malin Ackholts told the Nerikes Allehanda newspaper.

“As an employer, one has laws and collective agreements that must be followed.”

She emphasized that employers should first take workplace grievances to their employers, rather than publishing on the internet.

According to Ackholt, employee disloyalty can be grounds for dismissal, but she questioned the speed at which the McDonald’s worker lost her job.

“It’s a long process if an employer wants to remove someone from their job,” she told the newspaper.

Magnus Pojen, owner of the four McDonald’s restaurants in Örebro, called the incident “tragic”.

“The woman who was fired was a capable employee, but what she had written about her workplace was totally unacceptable,” he told Nerikes Allehanda.

He added that he plans to ensure managers at his McDonald’s restaurants do a better job of explaining to new employees how they should go about addressing workplace grievances.

Fire them both! Only a fool blogs about their workplace ubless they are saying something posotive. The guy doing the firing is equally as guilty.

But then the law here in Sweden regarding your privacy rights seem to be prettty slim on the ground? Surely McDonalds worldwide has some code of ethics?

Yeah here in the States it is illegal for an employer to disclose the reason for being fired unless some sort of legal charges have been made for example theft in the work place. But if "Joe Blow" shows up late on a regular basis and is finally fired for that tardiness then the employer can not disclose this information to anyone. Only that he was fired. Otherwise "Joe Blow" could sue his former employer for defimation of character.

"Swedish employers shun foreign grads: study" The headlines put me off applying for a job at Ystad's MacD! Shame; such a promising career!

@Beavis: Sometimes the consumer deserves to know what is really going on at their favourite company. If a company is doing something shady or illegal, or if they are mistreating their employees I want to know about! Sadly too many people are too afraid to do that, especially when other employees thinks it is wrong to do so.

People need to blow their whistle more. Of course, if a company is doing something good they should get recognition for it, but if they do something bad that should also get recognised.

An employee should be grateful for being employed, but and employer should be even more grateful that someone actually wants to work for them.

@dizzymoe33 Actually, US employers usually don't even disclose that the former employee was fired or laid off. Usually they'll simply say "yes, that person worked for us from X date to Y date". It's not a legal requirement that they do this, but they do it to prevent possible lawsuits from former employees for slander etc.

As if McDonalds and the stupid work of the month humiliation was ever a good place to work! In my country they pay so little and explore workers to the limit. Everybody Knows that no matter what McDonalds marketing says, the reality is very sad! I choose not to eat there, the food is junk, and and the price isn't that low that you can't eat better near by!

If I never saw another Golden Arch I would survive. Ironically, careers and meals at Macs are starting to look pretty good these days...in the USA. Realistically though, the jobs cant be much better than the food. I pity those working at these troughs even more than the victims eating there.

@xenyasai that doesnt give everyone the right to go and give out about where they work. if it were allowed it would mean false statements coming out all over the place. a "blog" is not the right place to vent your agner at where you work. Only an idiot does that. There are means and channels to confilct resolution. Some companies have better ways than others. In large companies like this, if something is wrong it need to be reported to a more senior manager, if that one is biased, go higher, these structures are in place. If you are in a union, goo there. It wont always be the case, but in this one the structures were there. But both the first and 2nd blogger were at fault.

I am yet to understand why "food" that is to be sold within minutes is ckocka full of preservatives that make it last for years!

surely they can save some money and remove the added crap then we might flock back to eat "real" food

I can see macka's as employer of the year really!
23:59 January 20, 2010 by dizzymoe33
@craptastical thanks for the updated information I wasn't sure if they could reveil that you were fired or not.

When I lived in Sweden, I ate more McDonald's there than in the US! The atmosphere is different and employees seem to be a little happier...?

It was wrong though to disclose that information, in the US someone would be taken to court for that for millions of dollars.

It sometimes seems to me that networking does only harm to our life, work, social positions, etc. But why not just behave well on the web?
