'Necrophiliacs' behind Haiti Facebook hoax

More than 200,000 Swedes joined a Facebook group claiming to be collecting donations to help earthquake victims in Haiti before it was revealed as a hoax by the “Swedish Necrophilia Association”.

Initially named "2kr per medlem till jordbävningsoffren i Haiti" (‘2 kronor per member to earthquake victims in Haiti’), the group promised to send 2 kronor ($0.30) per member when the group reached 200,000 members.

However, charity-minded Swedes who joined the group thinking they were helping earthquake received quite a shock when the 200,000-member milestone was reached and it was revealed that the Facebook group had been created by a made-up group calling itself the Swedish Necrophilia Association (Svenska Nekrofil-föreningen).

“As many already know, it is the Swedish Necrophilia Association which is now sending 500,000 kronor to ensure that the bodies which are brought home from Haiti are in as good shape as possible,” read the group’s Facebook page.

The page also included many disturbing photos, as well as additional text in which the group described the types of bodies its members wanted to have sex with.

Although the group had more than 212,000 members by Tuesday afternoon, its membership tally dwindled as more people were alerted to the scam.

By late Tuesday evening, the group had been removed entirely from the popular social networking site.

In an email to the Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) newspaper, one of the founders of the fake Facebook group explained that the hoax was “to get a good laugh and teach people about critically reviewing their sources”.

A sick game. But true that people should review their sources!

franny66 ... Over 212,000 Swedes thought they did some thing good, nothing sick about that. You could write sick PEOPLE about the ones who wanted "to get a good laugh and teach people about critically reviewing their sources".

Researchers tell us that up to 40% of society have psychopathic tendencies. Genrally most psychopates do not act on them and it is good for society. But those who do are smart and dificult to detect because they know how to cover their back and hide their tracks.

This Haiti hoax is probably created by sick minds.
14:41 January 20, 2010 by Twiceshy
Audrian those are some wild claims you made there. This article's moral of checking sources comes to mind...

People shouldnt be joining all these facebook groups. There are plenty of warnings about hoaxes or viruses being spread through these groups.

If you want to support Haiti, why not donate through the recognised organisations?

I doubt that this so called organisation actually donated this money. Because if there were any Swedish nationals the government would help ensuring the bodies would be shipped back. This is clearly another hoax to rip people of. It would be nice if people were not so naiv and used some common sense.

Wouldnt surprise me if whoever created this group sits in another country. Facebook is all over the world, remember?

@franny66 - if you reckon Swedes are sick, why are you reading this newspaper?
02:42 January 21, 2010 by franny66
Its only swedes who could see this as a joke and find having sex with dead bodies as helping sorry...
13:18 January 21, 2010 by orre
@franny66 ... so why do you hate us so much?
14:22 January 21, 2010 by franny66
@orre ....well the answer is simply swedes helped nazi germany so much and continue hes racist biology studies until the seventies....I think that explains why I and many other people treat you as a bad virus..in Europe that should have been eradicated years ago..
17:09 January 21, 2010 by orre
@franny66 you claim you hate the Nazis but you use the exact rhetoric as they do: swedes = virus, swedes = sick. The Nazis used the same words but for people they did not like, so you are not better then the Nazis. You are spreading hate like they did.

I do not think you will find any Swede that will deny or defend that we sold the Nazis steel and let them go through Sweden by train and that we had a horrible institute for racial biology and so on. We actually try to make documentaries and talk about it in our country. We even talked about it in school. I was born after the WW2 and the horrible time of racial biology! Have I inherited that guilt through my DNA? No, I think not!

I have learned something by history and you have not.

Hej Orre

Don't take these people seriously. Anybody can log in here and express all sorts of weird opinions.

That's freedom of speech and to be applauded.

But if it's rubbish just ignore it.

I read a lot of pure unadulterated rubbish on here but I know many good people write stuff too.

And I appreciate that.

Mere Englishman that I am; )
