A person employed to clear snow off the tracks was killed on Monday morning after being hit by an X2000 high speed train.

The accident took place at 6am at Linghem station, 10 kilometres east of Linköping in central Sweden.

"We're told the victim of the accident was a snow removal worker from the Swedish Rail Administration," said Elina Yli-Torvi, spokeswoman for Swedish state rail operator SJ.

The victim was hit by a high speed X2000 train travelling from Norrköping to Linköping.

"This is being viewed as an accident in the workplace," said emergency services coordinator Krister Fält.

Rail traffic came to a standstill immediately after the accident but was back on track by 9am. SJ arranged for replacement buses to take passengers to their final destinations in the intervening period.

Poor guy.

How about providing workers of this type simple electronic devices so that they are warned of an approaching train.

@ Da Goat

Could be he didn't hear it. Easy to imagine how it could happen: like so many young people seem to do nowadays, he could have had stereo earplugs on, blasting music from an MP3. Not only it's potentially dangerous if you are working or riding a bike on the side of a road, but you will eventually make yourself deaf in the process.

Hi, there is a strong possibility of missing an oncomming train, in the best possible weather, even if you are not hooked on to music or high on booze / drugs. I know this, because I was almost hit by a train while at college and shaken by the experience, took a medical test to make sure by senses worked right. What the doctors told me is that if you work / use an environment very often, sometimes the brain substitutes what you actually see / hear, with images / sound already etched in the brain. This happens like the stimulus response to an impulse. I was also told that this is the basis for frequent location rotation of workers mannig tracks and airport tarmacs.

May he rest in peace!
