Swedish police conduct file sharing raid

Published: 3 Feb 10 13:08 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/24762/20100203/

Suspected file sharers were targeted in four raids at locations across Sweden on Tuesday, as police acted on information from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI).

Police raided two locations in Gothenburg on Tuesday and confiscated computers allegedly hosting so-called DC hubs, which connect file sharers through Direct Connect software.

A 28-year-old man has been questioned regarding the administration of the hubs.

A further three raids were conducted at two locations in Stockholm, and one in Kramfors in northern Sweden.

"A large number of computers and other equipment have been seized and it will take some time for the police to analyze them," Fredrik Ingblad at the Stockholm City prosecutor's office told The Local on Wednesday.

According to Ingblad, police suspect that the hubs have been used to allow users access to between 9,000 and 17,000 music files and the four are all suspected of copyright infringement.

"Two of the four have confessed, the other two have denied committing an offence but have confessed to having some involvement," Ingblad said.

The police raids were conducted in response to reports from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), which represents 95 percent of the music industry.

"There are far too many of these DC hubs in Sweden, we lead the world in this field I think," Lars Gustafsson, chief executive of IFPI Sweden, told The Local on Wednesday.

"The police have had a shortage of resources for this type of crime but now it seems to be creeping up the list of priorities somewhat. That is something we welcome as it affects a lot of people within the music industry."

I guess we have to used the police for something, no? Since they are useless in solving the countless amount of rape and murder; then why not redirect their ineptitude towards knocking-down doors and confiscate computers.

So now the big US money grabbing Music industry is A snooping on Swedes and then getting the Swedish tax payer - ie me to foot the bill for the Police raidLOL

9k-17k files... whats this? 2003?

Heck I have more than those an any one of my 6 hard disks.

Problem is, people are getting too complacent even though they know new Swedish laws like IPRED has been paid by large overseas corporations, you want to share on DC++ fine... but share while behind a VPN like IPREDator.se (run by thepiratebay boys - full disclosure: i am in no way connected to that site nor do i profit in any way or form if you join the site) and be safe.

You dont go barebacking every person you meet without protection (not unless you are stupid) so why not take a few basic precautions when filesharing? 50kr a month gets you peace of mind and all the filesharing you could possibly want with impunity.

As for the Admin of these sites, I hope he had encrypted his drives using something like (free) truecrypt (www.truecrypt.org) which would pretty much render the police's and IFPI's search for "evidence" up the creek.

@peropaco, dont be silly... rape, child porn, murder etc dont cost the big corporations a dime, nailing a teenager because he downloads an MP3 file *may* cost them upto 30cents.. and since they paid for IPRED to come into Sweden, why waste time on small things like rape etc

And like you pointed out, since they are soooo efficient at solving rapes and murders, perhaps working as lackeys for the music industry fatcats is more their style.

@chapora, here's a carrot...., I sometimes like feeding trolls ;)

My 13 years old kid use the DC hubs.

Oh, oh, my poor soul! I ve raised a criminal! In my house! All that time!

Now he s playing at guitar, maybe using on mp4player some tunes he stolen from innocent corporations... What can I do? call the police? But I love him! Let him get away with this? I don t like criminals, and to have one in my house...

My hearth is bleeding.

@chapora see from your other posts your a "musician" working for the record scum. Stop punping your money in melodicrap and x-nonsense, YOU are the one destroying music, YOU are the criminals...

Lets take this into perspective:

2.8 million Swedes fileshare (www.thelocal.se/22602/20091012/) every few weeks 4 get caught... now the filesharing "problem" is just 2,799,096.

Good job IFPI you are certainly tackling this "problem" in the same modern way of thinking that you handled Napster and thats gotten you to your present state.

Also worth noting by following the above link to thelocals previous article is that the 2.8 million figure was given to us by the scum....umm, folk, at the IFPI themselves.

If a third of a countries population has no problem with blatantly thumbing their noses at a unfair and unjust law, its not a problem with the people, but a problem with the law - and the industry that would rather fight the tide and stick to their outdated business practices than innovate for the digital age.

off courses prices of DVDs are unreasonably high and out of the access, which provides rational cause to share with others who can't.

If the IFPI is able to give all these figures. They must be hacking into a hell of a lot of PC's and installing some keystoke capturing software.

Arrest them all

eZee - I download myself and would not like to preach here for righteous behavior, but it is clear even for you that there is something morally wrong here. You protect yourself behind VPN, you encrypt your stuff etc. And even you realize that downloaders are losing in courts. So all arguments are good, but do not make it ideological and please do not picture yourself like some Robyn Hood who takes from the rich and gives to the poor. You do not give back anything.

It is just a wallet laying down on the ground by a guy and we just come an pick it up, covering under a mask.

I bet that you do not go and actually pay for the music by Robyn - who owns her own production company and writes and sings herself. You also do not differ between those who work for predating production companies and those who issue their records by themselves through hard work and sleepless nights, while investing all their savings into it.

This is especially true for PC gaming industry. The margins of programmers are low and a lot of helluva games are made by 5-6 guys who sit in a room for 3 years with no life. Our actions are hitting then directly and you can righteously sit and tell these programmers that you take the money from their evil bosses - bottom line you take the money directly from them. That is also why many games are switching to Steam, companies block accounts on consoles, rental stores are non-existent and the life harder on EVERYONE.

BTW nothing is overpriced. Free market decides the prices and people are ready to spend whatever is required.

I feel so much safer knowing that the police are doing their job and going after this serious problem. Though I bet it's a lot easier arresting some computer/music geeks than it is to patrol the streets of Rosengård.
