Outrage at court ruling against traffic wardens

A court in Malmö in southern Sweden has ruled that traffic wardens must be prepared to take abuse as part of their daily work.

Although the court handed down a fine and a suspended sentence to a man convicted for assaulting a female traffic warden in the city, no damages were awarded as compensation for the verbal abuse the man unleashed during the attack.

"It's simply part of their job description that they can make people indignant," district court judge, Ann-Louise Roos, told news agency TT.

The statement has sparked outrage from the traffic wardens' trade union and from crime prevention organizations.

Solveig Bellgran, a traffic warden in Stockholm said the ruling could be taken as a green light for further attacks.

"It's awful, you get shivers down your spine. It's as if now it's a free for all for the general public to come up to me, spit in my face, hit me, or throttle me," he said.

Ridiculous ruling.
13:57 February 13, 2010 by Nemesis
This is nuts.

This ruling will turn it into open season on traffic wardens.

The district judge who made this ruling is not fit to be a judge.

I await the court cases for assaulting traffic wardens.
13:58 February 13, 2010 by peropaco
traffic wardens are walking tax collectors and that's their only purpose. I don't agree with assaulting anyone but a few curse words geared towards them is ok in my book.
14:09 February 13, 2010 by planethero
Yep and say a word against a judge and see what happens "contempt".

The judiciary are a bunch of retards. We should vote for judges to kick out these morons. We should vote on everything!
15:02 February 13, 2010 by Nemesis
@ planethero

Regarding voting for judges. We have seen where that has led in the USA, no thanks.
15:23 February 13, 2010 by Dogs_Gonads
Surely this should now be extended to police officers. Some how I don't think it will.

Say 'F#%k Off' to an officer and you will get arrested.

So this judge is saying Traffic Wardens need to be thicker skinned than Police Officers.

And I thought Britain was broken.
15:33 February 13, 2010 by mbe
I think the judge got a ticket that she didnt feel she should get!

I'm torn... on one hand i totally disagree with the law because i dont think anybody should be open to abuse...

on the other hand i think the traffic wardens are like the Gestapo and should be cursed upon and spend a loooong time in hell even if everything else they do in life is good.
16:13 February 13, 2010 by here for the summer
another really stupid ruling .

I would ask the judges think they too should be subject to abuse like this and not give punishment to the offenders ..
17:20 February 13, 2010 by Renfeh Hguh
Sensible ruling!

If you can't take the heat, get another job.
17:28 February 13, 2010 by EtoileBrilliant
I'm going against the grain here but these people are undertaking a public service and should be treated with respect.

We have street cleaning every Monday where I live. All the locals move their cars and all the out of towners come and park in the vacant spaces. Net results are streets don't get cleaned properly yet we still pay taxes as if they are. Whenever I see that more parking tickets are issued every year it brings a smile to my face.

On a different point, I see that the city is now employing 200+ people to come down on dog owners. I hope they issue them with rifles.
17:40 February 13, 2010 by livinginsweden
Hej if you can take the heat .. get out of the kitchen ... get a more useful job ....

Traffic wardens are scum of the earth .... they write you a ticket ... irregardless of common sense....... I left my car overnight in a big 100 spaces car park next to a sports hall ... and got a ticket the next morning.... why? .... becos the sign say so .... it is free parking from 6 am to 2400 but no parking from 2400 to 0600 go figure....

Yes the judge is right ...

Watch out parking inspectors..... i am coming ... the only way to get some common sense into traffic warden is to shout and scream it into their thick skulls...

@etoilebrilliant - Rifles to shoot the dogs? Sure, just you go ahead a try. Will feed you to the wolves, little man.
18:47 February 13, 2010 by Yendor79
Nice precedent Mr.Judge!! May it with time, abuse will come to be allowed on court staff too... now doesn't this sound sweet to you!?
20:33 February 13, 2010 by EtoileBrilliant
@livinginsweden

Take up your case with the people who invent the rules not those who enforce them. At worse you might find out out why there is no parking between 24:00 and 6:00 (keep out motor homes, caravans, travellers, etc) at best you might get your money back.

My advice to people who get parking tickets is chill out. 9 times out of 10, you deserved them. Move on. You'll only die an early death getting stressed. If you've genuinely been wronged, take it up with Securitas (the contractor), in my experience if they're wrong they'll correct it there and then.

I always joke with my wife about how good natured Swedish parking wardens are compared to their London counterparts. In London, they go around in pairs. one to write the tickets, one to fight off attackers. In Stockholm, they also go around in pairs. One to write the tickets, the other to offer grief conseilling to the car owner.

For my part, I wish they'd hire more Nazis - none of this phoning you and "would you like to move your car before I ticket you".

Traffic warden: You have got to farkin jokin you stupid farkin cart judge ,your obviously a farkin ignorant cretin , you poxy pencil pushing farkin ignoramus !

Judge : Be seated your in contempt of court with such outlandish and vulgar despicable language & any further outbursts , regardless of my decision & outcome , ill find you guilty of waiting tax payers time & mine!

Traffic warden: Whats wrong judge ? you cant take some derogative language aimed at you ,for such a simpleton , & only appointed your seat for bending over , you fat farkin carnt , if you can not take the heat in your so called position of authority & speak for all of society , then perhaps you should invest in getting out in the real world & sniffing some flowers you stupid FARK!
23:07 February 13, 2010 by CarlBlack
@EtoileBrilliant: What about rifles against traffic wardens? That would be useful. Especially if at a suburb far from city centre is no free parking place and if you want to rent a place, they want a contract for at least one year.
03:38 February 14, 2010 by Davey-jo
I guess all traffic wardens are now not working at all but sitting behind their lawyers expecting abuse as part of their job. Perhaps the judge may like to accompany them on their merry way?
03:43 February 14, 2010 by DavidtheNorseman
I didn't quite catch it from the article...was the traffic warden physically assaulted or did the fellow just call her nasty names?

There is a considerable difference.............................
09:48 February 14, 2010 by livinginsweden
@etoilebrilliant

I am sure any traffic warden with half a gm of brain or even one brain cell can tell the difference between a normal car and a caravan or motor home or traveler... etc.

there are certain things i would not do to carry out the wishes of politicians.... e.g. go to fight a stupid war

Nelson Mandella. Ghandi King and their followers fight against the stupid rules and laws ... and changed the way we live...... when no one wants to be a traffic warden becos of the uprising and abuses they get from the public... things will change.....

That is why we always encourage the opposition to rebel against the 'dictators' that we dont like in the west.

Rebel against your husband or bf is he has stupid rules in the house..... etc..

The concept of following the law and rules is preached by politicians who want to control the citizens.... when it suit the politicians to encourage the citizen to rebel against the authority, they will never hesitate when it suits them...

I have been visiting Sweden annually since 1981. If someone in 1981 had asked me to describe Sweden I would have said it was a "calm, thoughtful and respectful country", unlike my USA.

This blog is proof that "calm, thoughtful, and respectful" left Sweden a long time ago....

Shame

Contempt of court in sweden

I don't think so. There is no comtempt of court law as in US,UK, Oz. Posibily something else but not as you would think.
13:17 February 14, 2010 by EtoileBrilliant
@CarlBlack - when you see a traffic warden take a dump on the street or in a park where children play, then you can bring your rifle and take a shot. Every dog owner denies that their dog is responsible, yet the sh#t is there for all to see.

The simple fact is that dog owners are beeen run out Stockholm (long overdue IMHO). How do I know this? Well the City has employed 200+ dog inspectors (call them what you may). Moreover, Spokparken in Vasastan will be banned for dogs in the near future and more parks will follow suit.

I'm not against dogs per se, I've had a few in my time. Its just that when a few selfish owners allow their animals to foul the streets and the rest of dog owners deny there is a problem, that's the time to say "no more".

This is NUTS........

I got a parking ticket outside my brand new house - i was the first to move in and the place was a building site with no roads ór signs. when i called to complain i was told that if there is no signs at all it means don't park.
08:57 February 15, 2010 by thelionking
On the Flip side:

In London parking enforcement officers are paid a bonus...a brand new FIAT in some cases for most tickets in a month. Kinda like 'Worker of the Month'. So much so, parking enforcement has become an important source of revenue FACT.

At least the wardens there disguise their intentions by hiding behind a 'coat of arms' of the local Borough.

Here, however the whole drafting of G4 and Securitas to do this smaks of commercialising this deviant form of day light robbery, so deserves all the suspicion and scorn it gets.

Sadly 'Warden Abdullah' is the one getting it in the neck, whilst those above him rub their hands at this dirty revenue.

The judge found the accused guilty of assault and sentenced him to him a fine and a suspended sentence. He then chose not to award economic compensation as the assault was by way of harsh language and not pyhsical violence.

Seem's fair enough to me. What's all the fuss about?
21:39 February 15, 2010 by EtoileBrilliant
Thank you Kevin Harris. Common sense prevails.

What do they expect... a Thank You card?

I work as a paramedic in Toronto, Canada, I get spit on, swore at and swung at on a regular basis and... my job is "helping" people!!! I take no offense whatsoever. It's part of my job!

We all have options. I'm sure there are many unemployed that would jump at the chance to work in this "abusive" career. If you can't take the heat, don't stand in the fire!
06:15 February 16, 2010 by Tutu
So far the assault is not physical, racial or sexist. I dont see anything wrong in the public abusing public officers especially the traffic warden. They could sometimes be a pain in the a........ They dont expect me to say thank you after giving me a ticket. It is natural for me to be angry and vent it out somehow without going over the boundary of self respect.
12:55 February 16, 2010 by red.king
@livinginsweden

Some good trolling there......
16:04 February 20, 2010 by DamnImmigrant
I do not understand the rage against the parking people. The tickets they write are the result of direct violations of the rules. You broke the law by parking illegally and now you are mad at them?

If you get a ticket and you feel you were not parked illegal, document the situation, camera phones, and complain. A picture is worth a thousand words!

If the sign says NO PARKING, no matter what time, then guess what, it means there is no parking and you are going to get a ticket!

The snow is piled up on the street and you cannot park your car within the parking outline so your car is to far from the curb which is buried deep in the snow, do not park there or you are going to get a ticket.

If you can't pay the fine, don't do the crime!
