Stockholm transport authority, SL, has introduced a temporary discount on its monthly passes as compensation for weeks of transport turmoil.

The authority has also taken out a series of full-page adverts in national newspapers and given a "full and genuine apology" to the hunders of thousands of travellers who have been affected by unsatisfactory train and metro services.

"It is a unique occurrence for large parts of the metro to lie still for several days. We are therefore taking the unique step of compensating SL's faithful travellers by giving away a free week's travel," SL chairperson Christer G Wennerholm wrote in an article in Dagens Nyheter.

A 30 day travel card will now cost 530 kronor ($74), instead of 690. Those paying a reduced price will now pay 320 kronor. Travellers with year and season cards will also receive compensation.

National rail operator, SJ, continues to battle with several delays and other disturbances on main routes after the weekend's snowfalls and cold temperatures, but the number of cancelled trains has dropped considerably.

Gothenburg should also compensate travellers, after all; this city's public transport services was and still is very unsatisfactory. Busses and trams are still not on schedule and when they do come they are over crowded. We are then told another one will come in 5 to 7 minuits but we must wait about 30 minuits instead. Do the right thing Gothenburg city follow Stockholm's exemple in this also..... NOT ONLY IN CHARGING VEHICLES FOR ENTERING THE CITY!!!

elaborate a little more on how the compensation will work.

monthly pass will be discounted.... so will you have to buy a monthly card in that week??

What about if you only pay as you go with either stamp tickets or sms bus cards that have been delivered but no buss/train turned up.

pretty vivid compensation plan really SL maybe you should say that for one week there will be no payment required for anyone to use the sl service

and leave it at that instead of trying to discount here and save the money on the news paper ad and give people the free rides!

I concur with Misssh. I am curious about the design and the motive of the plan. Why are "pay as you go" travelers who bought coupons(remsas), stamped and sms tickets for use during that period left out from the measure? Were they not equally affected? This is not only discriminatory but also smacks more of a marketing, rather than a compensatory move -and designed to rack up sales figures for monthly passes!

Localer you're talking as if SL is doing people a huge favor or something...

You can buy your travel card to start on a date in the future, if you already have a monthly card.

I think this is a great offer from SL, in Scotland this would never happen!

I actually think it's unfair to blame SL for these problems. They can't help that snow falls on the tracks and freezes. Sure, they can hire more people to manually remove the ice from the tracks, but to afford that, they would have to increase the price of travel passes and I doubt that will make people happier. So personally, I don't think SL are obliged to compensate for it. But it is of course real nice of them to do so.
09:03 February 27, 2010 by Twiceshy
ponjoh so you think that when an airline cancels a flight due to snow, they shouldn't compensate people at all?

It's not SL's fault, but people still paid for a service that was not provided. That's not fair.
