Sweden sets sights on easing Russian relations

A diplomatic thaw between Sweden and Russia appears to be imminent. On Tuesday Fredrik Reinfeldt and Carl Bildt will head to Moscow to meet prime minister Vladimir Putin and president Dmitrij Medvedev.

Sweden's prime minister Fredrik Reinfeldt intends to use the meeting to discuss continued climate negotiations and EU cooperation with Medvedev, and the Baltic Sea cooperation and environmental issues with Putin, according to the Dagens Nyheter daily.

Swedish-Russian relations have been in the doldrums since Sweden strongly criticised Russia in connection with the Georgian war in 2008. Reinfeldt has underlined the importance of existing peace agreements but feels that now is the time to work for an improvement in relations with the EU's oil and gas-rich neighbour.

The visit is Reinfeldt's first during his tenure as prime minister.

Bildt and Reinfeldt plan to spend some of their one-day visit in discussions with Swedish business people in Moscow as well as Russian human rights groups.

Not exactly about this article?

Today, it's said that Russian tourists are the ones who spend more money here than any other tourists in Sweden, when they visit this country - buying up everything from furniture to art.

Times have changed.

Changed : The distant relations that we've had with our most powerful nations across the waters to St. Petersburg

From Salt 11 Talks that were scheduled before the assassination of Olof Palme to all the hysteria and hoopla about alleged or real foreign submarine incursions into Swedish waters and the vigorous agitations about the Baltic Nations under Soviet "control" under Carl Bildt as leader of the opposition and as prime minister - Mr. Bildt or the former Mr. Bildt in my opinion being the most anti-Soviet, Anti-Communist and anti-Warsaw pact Swedish politician of all time. It's particularly significant that it's the same - or a newer perhaps politically born again Carl Bildt ( who I saw on TV this morning reporting on the security sitaution in Iraq ) that is co- leading the delegation to Russia......but the government compromises the members of the Alliance and at this very moment that takes us back to thoughts of the Red Cross's Bengt Westerberg when he was a very much appreciated leader of the Folk Party.. it was the year 1985 and a goodly number of us the anti-Apartheid people had assembled to demonstrate outside the office of the South African Legation somewhere around Linnégatan, where Mr. Westerberg was scheduled to be the main speaker.

It was incredible! He used the first fifteen minutes of his time to rail against the Soviet in Afghanistan - at this anti Apartheid demonstration - and had to be politely reminded about the occasional on which he had been invited to speak......

Not only Obama says, times have changed...

Russia is huge and rich country with several climatical zones. It will not go anywhere. Sweden will benefit from good neigbourly relations with Russia. US, UK Poland and other east European countries hastily or perhaps purposely blamed Russia for Georgia-Russia conflict. In the end, OECD made an investigation and put almost all the blame on Georgia.

Correction: the govrenment comprises ( not compromises) the Alliance...

after all, they're in it together.....

Be careful, the Russians only want the Swedish women - they are a crafty bunch who always have something up their sleeve

"The ice dripped in the winter sun. It was the first day when the light had been intense enough to cause dripping in the sunlight. To hear it was an extraordinary wakeup call. The cycle was happening again as it always does, always will (or so we think). I imagined that on my summer island, the bees..." READ »
