The Swedish Maritime Administration (Sjöfartsverket) has sharply criticized ferry companies in the Baltic Sea for ignoring warnings and failing to change routes to avoid thick ice sheets.

Nearly 20 ferries were still stuck in the ice off Sweden's Baltic Sea coast on Saturday morning, following a week in which thousands of passengers were stranded on ships which became marooned between ice blocks up to 15 metres thick.

A number of ferries operating between Sweden and Finland took difficult ice-bound routes without contacting the ice breaker service and against the advice of maritime safety authorities, said Johnny Lindvall from the maritime administration's ice breaker service.

"They've got Titanic Syndrome - they think they are immortal," he told Svenska Dagbladet newspaper's on line edition.

However Jan Kårström, CEO of the Viking Lines ferry company said that the warnings came too late and a number of ferries were already stuck hard in the ice when the message was received.

The maritime administration has also criticized ships for ramming ice sheets at high speed in an attempt to break through. Lindvall said that the ferries irresponsible behaviour was using up scarce ice breaking resources.

"We don't have enough ice breakers to handle this number of stranded ships," he said.

scare???

If these passenger ferries are not classed as "fit for ice" then their masters should be held to account. Losing money by taking a longer route,or call for ice breaker assistence, should be secondary To passanger saftey. No one would survive long out there if one of these ships went down.

so tired of hearing global warning crap...... when its a very hot day ''global warning'' a body of water freezes ''global warming''. the same body of water froze like this 20 years ago and no one was screaming global warning. but now since people cant hold there own opinions they just leach onto people like Gore and ride with it everything is global warming. yet you are the same people jumping into your SUV's and driving a mile up to the 7-11, and the same people that dont recycle. Global warming is a cop-out and a quick get rich tool for the lucky one that hold public credentials!! who was causing global warming during the ice age?

If you guys want to counter climate change claims, you really need to find better examples than this. If you look into the details of global warming at all, you'll see that there is nothing saying that there will be no more cold weather or frozen sea ice or whatever. The changes in global temperatures needed to cause serious problems are very small, a few degrees. And just because it's been colder here doesn't mean the global average temperature hasn't been higher. It has and that's the statistic that counts. If you're going to disbelieve one of the most important issues of our time, at least learn about it and start making some sensible arguments.

But also global warming can cause cold weather if the melting ice breaks the ocean currents that bring hot air into europe, so global warming can actually cause cooling in some areas.

As I have said before, I do not like the moniker "global warming". It is misleading. What we are experiencing is "climate change". All the crap (not a scientific term) we keep spewing into the atmosphere is altering the delicate balance of the earth's climate.

And no, I do not own a SUV. However, I suppose I am guilty as the next guy as far as a carbon footprint goes. I try to live as lightly as possible on the earth (fuel efficient vehicle, heat my house with wood, recycle, etc.) but it may be too little, too late.

There are credible scientists on both sides, saying completely opposite things, with evidence and computer modeling to substantiate their claims. Only morons say the debate is over.

If you stretch your arms out side to side, this would represent time as far as we can measure it on earth. Your fingernails would represent the fraction of time the earth was inhabited by humans. The whites of your fingernails is the length of time "climate change" science can be accurate.

"Climate Change" is not the most important issue of OUR time, as you can see. It's rather a figment of your imagination.
