Viasat, part of the MTG group, has won the exclusive rights to broadcast the English Barclays Premier League for the next three seasons.

"We are extremely confident that Viasat will broadcast Barclays Premier League football in a comprehensive and innovative manner," said Peter Scudamore, CEO for the FA Premier League.

The news means that Viasat Broadcasting will take over from Canal Plus from the start of the 2010/2011 season. Viasat have not divulged information over how much they had paid to win the rights.

"That is not public information, and we will not be releasing it," Karin Zingmark at Viasat told The Local on Monday.

Europe's richest league will be broadcast in Viasat Fotboll, Viasat Sport and Viasat Sport HD as well as a new Viasat Premier League HD channel.

The channels will together show a total of 228 matches each season, divided over 6-8 games per week. Viasat will also broadcast more feature programmes of highlights, interviews and analysis.

"The rights and the exposure brings with it a significant responsibility to develop the framework and coverage," Viasat sports chief Per Tellander said in a statement.

The new Premier League HD channel will enable fans to get a closer look at their favourite stars.

Viasat already owns the rights to Champions League broadcasts.

"Together with the Champions League, the Premier League makes Viasat Fotboll Sweden's leading football channel," Per Tellander said.

2 questions and worries: what Canal + will offer then in terms of sports? they are very much premier league focused...

how much the viasat prices will increase (and this is what worries me more since I have those channels and I am not interested at all in the English football)?

No, thank you.

Question - I signed up to Canal+ Sport just last month purely for the Prem coverage. It's a 12 month deal. Does anyone know if I'll be able to swap to Viasat next season or am I stuck with the subscription? Surely not?

I called Canal digital on Monday to cancel my subscription for exactly this reason. I was told that my contract is until January 2011. I stated the only reason i subscribed was for the Premiership. They said that Canal digital (who my contract is with) only provide the channels, not what is on the channel. I pushed and said "surely Canal+ and canal digital are the same company? They have the same font in their logos after all?" ... the answer came back " we use ot be, but no longer"

After much discussion, the guy conceeded that it was a grea area and that there was nothing they were allowed to do, but he understood my concern.

Can't someone from the Local look into this ? It cannot be the case that consumers subscribe to a TV service based on a specific programme offering, that the offering changes, and the signal provider then claims no responsibility.

I certainly genuinely thought I was subscribing to Canal+ the TV channel, not Canal digital a service provider !
