King deployed to back Brazil fighter bid

Sweden's defence minister Sten Tolgfors was joined in Brazil on Tuesday by Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia as Brazil decides on a fighter jet tender that has a Swedish plane in the running.

Several Swedish business leaders also joined the royal party.

Swedish company Saab is competing in the Brazilian jet tender with its Gripen NG mono-motor fighter.

Although the plane is seen to be favored by the Brazilian air force, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and his defense minister, Nelson Jobim, have repeatedly said they prefer the more powerful but more expensive Rafale jet by France's Dassault company.

The third aircraft in the running, the F/A-18 Super Hornet by US group Boeing, is seen as an outside contender only because of doubts that Brazil would obtain the total technology transfer it is seeking as part of the deal.

The winning company will supply 36 fighter jets to Brazil, for an initial value of between $4 billion and $10 billion, with the possibility of many more fighters being added later on.

A decision is expected within the next two weeks.

Saab is going all-out to bolster its chances, taking out full-page colour advertisements in the Brazilian press and multiplying visits by top Swedish officials.

The Swedish king and queen were to dine with Lula late Tuesday.

Wednesday, they were to visit Brazil's supreme court and congress, and meet Brazilian indigenous leaders, according to the Swedish embassy.

On Thursday, the couple was to attend a conference in Sao Paulo arranged by that city's powerful industrial employers' federation.

On Friday, the king and queen were to drop in on the factory of Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer on the outskirts of Sao Paulo.

Queen Silvia, though born in Germany, is of Brazilian descent through her mother and spent 10 years of her childhood growing up in Brazil.

Hallo

If we believe in total honesty and transparency and a corruption free corporate environment, why the hell are we asking the king, queen, prince, princesses, sons in law and the royal guards to help sell fighter planes and ammunitions?

What is going on here?

Shouldn't a plane be bought or sold based on its merits.... and not 'royal' influence?

Shouldn't Brazil tell them to go home .... shouldn't Brazilians demand that they country buy on merits and nothing else?

Would we as Swedes allow the queen and king or brunei to come and sell us something?

ha ha

well it is all about kissing their feet when it come to think kind of contract.

Although most swedes generally don't have a clue, and try to pretend that everything coming out of their country is peaceful. the government realizes defense one of the most important industries to the country.

The ONLY reason france would get the contract is political since - their aircraft is terrible.

I wish my country could produce high-end military equipment....

I don't understand those Swedes who complain that their country produce weapons, it's so profitable business.. You are getting millions of crones+ good relationship with a lot of countries...

Yesterday some Swedes were protesting against nuclear power at T-centralen square..

What's wrong with this country??

Swedes are smart people, but some times they are pretty naive by thinking, that all goverment fundings comes from air...

I hope Sweden gets the contract.

It is good that the government has rolled out the royal family to help secure the jobs in Sweden.

That would secure jobs in Sweden and help fund the development of the next generation of fighters, securing future jobs.

This is a good move on the part of the government.

The most recession proof business in the world for all times are weapon, jet fighter ... sales. According to expert consensus it is the most corrupt for three reasons: (1) weapons are sold to all warring nations, (2) weapons are sold on credit to nations that don't have enough food for the general population, e.g., the failed state Somalia is awashed with weapons; (3) bribery is a standard trade practice. Some years ago the British weapons company bribed a Tanzanian official and sold the country a rader for $43 million, even though the equipment (according to UK development minister of that time) was oudated and unnecessary for Tanzania.

Sweden is a minor player.

Im a US MFG and believe your King and Queen should be complimented on trying to win over a Deal for the benefit of Swedish workers. Well done my good King... Hope you get the deal..

I have mixed feelings about the business deal. Hopefully, the presence of the King and Queen is for sealing the deal and showing that we respect Brazil and see the business deal as part business and part relationship.
