An inmate at Malmö prison has been warned over his persistent flatulence, with staff suspecting that the prisoner deployed the malodorous method to voice his discontent towards the system, the Metro newspaper reports.

The gas-prone inmate is reported to have resorted to passing wind on repeated occasions in what staff began to realize was a series of concerted attacks, according to Anders Eriksson at the Kirseberg prison in Malmö.

"I have worked within the prisons and probation service since 1986 and I have never experienced a situation where behaviour of this sort has led to punishment," Eriksson said to the newspaper.

The apparent clandestine motive for the man's ill-scented and noisome habit came to light a couple of weeks ago when he was playing cards with fellow inmates.

"I had an upset stomach while I was playing cards but did not want to fart there. So I went over to the guards instead," the 21-year-old convict said.

The young man was called in for questioning and despite his riposte that the farts were all noise and no fragrance, he has been served with a warning against his future flatulent conduct.

Jeez - perhaps the guy has IBS

Benjamin Franklin wrote an article many years ago titled Fart Proudly. A few years back a collection of his writings blasting various political situations (such as unfair taxation) was published under this title. I found the collection hillarious!

Perhaps this young man is a devotee of Franklin and is simply... expressing... his right to Fart Proudly!

With so many serious problems in the world. Why waste time on this? Let the guy have some fun in his own world...

Life cannot always be about serious news, the world is already stressful. We need some comic relief or should I say "release" sometimes. Good article. I wonder why did they serve him with a warning. Was it fullfart or halvfart? LOL

I think this is important news item.

This poor prisoner might have a medical condition called irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). It is estimated that about 30% of North American population suffered from this syndrome (probably similar number in Sweden have this condition) suffer from this condition silently. For some unknown reason the nerves and muscles in the person's stomach are extra sensitive. They contract too much when he eats. These contractions can cause cramping diarrhea or conceptions during or shortly after meal, followed by several liters of gas.

IRS is not a disease. It is a condition.

The prisoner is farting because that is his only way of releasing his gas. He has to go to a doctor to be advised what food to avoid. Food such as fatty food and milk products should be avoided.

Under this circumstances ignorance is not "bliss".

Wonder how the local got wind of this?

They sure got a nose for a good storey.

More global warming? He needs to see a doctor. Excessive and persistent flatulence is treatable. Firstly, look at his diet and a select healthy, perhaps, vegetarian option. Secondly, exercise. He needs to run or walk at least five kilometers or more a day to purge his digestive system. Third, monitor his weight and body fat. Overweight people may suffer more from this annoying habit.

He's reported as only being 21-years-old. He gassed the guards to voice his discontent towards the system. He was subconsciously seeking help from them.

Sort it out so we can all live in peace and fresh air.

When I was university many many years ago there was film about a guy who made his living playing various tunes with his backside. I think it was called "le Petomane" or some such. Perhaps with some training this guy could earn an honest living?
