Turkish ambassador arrives back in Sweden

Turkey's ambassador to Sweden, Zergün Korutürk, returned to her post in Stockholm on Tuesday, two weeks after she was recalled over the Swedish parliament's recognition of the Ottoman Turk massacre of Armenians as genocide.

Speaking to reporters before her departure to Stockholm, Zergün Korutürk
said her return became possible after the Swedish government distanced itself
from the parliament's decision.

"The Swedish government has clearly said that the decision would not be put into practice," Korutürk was quoted by the Anatolia news agency as saying.

Ankara still expects Stockholm to take steps to "compensate for this error," she said. "I hope the Swedish government will do everything in its power."

Ankara had announced last week that the ambassador would return to Stockholm soon.

Korutürk was summoned back to Ankara on March 11th after the Swedish parliament voted by a narrow margin to recognise the Ottoman massacres of Armenians during World War I as genocide, despite the government's advice not to do so.

Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt later expressed regret over the parliament's decision to Ankara, a move which his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan called "very positive".

Foreign Minister Carl Bildt also said that the position of his government, which supports Turkey's entry into the European Union, "remains unchanged".

The Swedish vote came in the footsteps of a March 4th vote by a key US Congress panel that branded the massacres as genocide, also prompting Ankara to recall its ambassador there.

Last week, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu indicated that he was not yet ready to send his ambassador back to Washington as the two cases were different.

"The Swedes clearly apologised," he said.

In a telephone conversation with US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton at the weekend, Davutoglu urged the US admininstration to block the bill, saying it was "critical" to bilateral ties.

Armenians say up to 1.5 million of their kin were killed in systematic massacres during World War I as the Ottoman Empire fell apart.

Turkey categorically rejects the genocide label and says between 300,000 and 500,000 Armenians and at least as many Turks perished in civil strife during the chaos of war.

"Foreign Minister Carl Bildt also said that the position of his government, which supports Turkey's entry into the European Union..."

That is to say, Bild prefers to see the country, which publically refuses to recognize its own history misconduct, populated by the descendants of the same people, who slaughtered Armenians (as well as assyrians, greeks, and other christians) in the beginning of 20th century and proud of doing so... in the European Union. Great thinking, mister FM.

And, this looser has enough balls to drive some issues with the middle east peace process. Does he know anything about Middle East, I wonder?

A government that apologies for the decisions taken by the parliament that is supposed to represent the citizens in a democratic country is very bad.

This is the sign of how weak is the foreign policy of the Reinfeldt coalition

Angela Merkel says that Turkey should have a special relationship with the EU.

Reinfeldt and Bildt can say what they want. They know they are irrelevant and that Merkel calls the shots.

Every time when a government or parliament in the world recognizes genocide, most of the people inside the Turkey starts to say if the world is going to recognize Armenian Genocide then we have the right to kill the remaining Armenians in Turkey. But when someone from Europe asks about their opinion they directly say "we would never commit a genocide even our DNA's does not coded like that etc.." I born in Turkey in a minority group and I am sick of the Turkish governments hypocrisy. If EU does not do something immediately one day in the future they will have the same destiny as Armenians in 1915 or Greeks in 1915 or Assyrians in 1915 ...

There you go, she is back already. Too much noise for nothing.

Turkey doesn't want to compromise the long struggle in joining the EU.

Coming to the senses is better worth for the country.

lol...long time no see...

by the way, is there any other photo of this lady? cos, she looks like a witch from Wizard of Oz. lol

P.S. Angela Merkel has a good point. The ones who are in favor of EU membership of Turkey, pick a city in the eastern of Turkey and just check for the socioeconomic state of that city via wikipedia.

Can someone suggest to this woman to pluck her eyebrows? They are somewhat bushy. And whats up with that retro 1980's hairstyle?
08:52 March 31, 2010 by Elton John
peropaco: In what way are they bushy? It is impossible to tell from this picture. Maybe thick, but not bushy.

My reason for coming to The Local was to get rid of the anti-intellectual comments one can find at e.g. Aftonbladet. I guess I was wrong.

Why allow an Islamic nation to join the EU, these are a people who put religion ahead of every other thing. Blinded and Ignorant, unable to question their own believes, they oppose all those who hold other beliefs.

Facts:

- Mohammed never met an angel, he met a demon who tried to choke him.

- Mohammed condones prostitution in the form of Nikah Al Mut'a (temporary contracts)

- Mohammed was coached to be a prophet, and was constantly formulating and abrogating laws to please his followers.

- Because of the falsehood preached, no sane person could willingly accept Islamic teachings except at the threat of death or the temptation of pleasures.

- The Jihad is still on today, evidence is seen in Nigeria where unbelievers are massacred daily.

No one has apologized for me. Bildt and Reinfeldt are two donkeys that speak only for themselves.
09:45 March 31, 2010 by peropaco
@Elton John. It all depends on the angle you are looking from. Allow me Sir Elton to say welcome to TL and may I suggest you redirect your oft-repeated and unobtrusive search for an intellectual forum to sites like Nouriel Roubini blog. But what kind of person would look for intellectual discussion on aftonbladet anyway? Gosh, only the mental impaired visit that site. How long it took you to figure it out? Two years or so?
10:18 March 31, 2010 by Elton John
peropaco: It's a two dimensional picture, so what angles are you talking about?

I never said I was coming from Aftonbladet, I said I was avoiding the type of people one can find (e.g. = "exempli gratia" = "for the sake of example") at Aftonbladet.

If this was an exam you would have failed it. Sorry.
