Reinfeldt welcomes Turkish ambassador

Sweden's Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt welcomed Turkey's ambassador to Sweden, Zergün Korutürk, back to Stockholm on Thursday after her recall to Ankara following the Swedish parliament's recognition of the Armenian genocide.

Fredrik Reinfeldt "welcomes that she is coming back to Sweden. It's good that our diplomatic relations are (maintained)," the prime minister's spokesperson Roberta Alenius told AFP.

Ambassador Zergün Korutürk arrived in the Swedish capital on Tuesday. Before her departure, she told reporters in Ankara her return to Sweden became possible after the Swedish government distanced itself from the parliament's decision.

"The Swedish government has clearly said that the decision would not be put into practice," Korutürk was quoted by the Anatolia news agency as saying.

Korutürk was summoned back to Ankara on March 11th after the Swedish
parliament voted by a narrow margin a opposition-led resolution to recognise
the Ottoman massacres of Armenians during World War I as genocide, despite the
government's advice not to do so.

Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt later expressed regret over the parliament's decision to Ankara, a move which his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan called "very positive".

Foreign Minister Carl Bildt also said that the position of his government, which supports Turkey's entry into the European Union, "remains unchanged".

"Our foreign minister also met his Turkish counterpart and he met some Turkish groups living here, so we've been involved in this," Alenius said.

"We had good relations with Turkey and want this to continue," she added.

Turkey in flexing its muscles must think that it is still in the era of the Ottoman turks.

Sorry, that empire died a hundred years ago and modern-day turk is no power-broker. Without economic, political or military clout, it stands alone.

Accept this reality and live with it, and then you will gain acceptance.

Next Turkey will say to Sweden "jump", and Foreign Minister Carl Bildt will comply and say "how high". What a spineless nincompoop. What credibility will Sweden have from now on to defend human rights anywhere in the world, or has it gotten to the point where this Swedish leadership does not give a damn what human rights abuses occur in the world. More importantly, the Swedish people got humiliated internationally by the fact that the parliament passed a law and the executive branch not only has vowed to disregard it, but also has apologized for it.

This is a sad spectacle made worse by the fact that the Swedish government has chosen to insult the entire Armenian nation.

Genocide is the greatest crime of humanity and International Court of Justice or domestic courts are the only authorities reserved to prosecute and proclaim genocide according to the 1948 UN Convention.

Therefore, accusing a nation and its generations as criminals of genocide requires strong historical and legal proofs and supports. Turkish historians, Turkish prime minister and Turkish Assembly several times suggested Armenia to discuss the events which occured in the WWI together with historians from both sides and even historians from other countries.

The Armenians have neither applied to international courts nor accepted to discuss these events in joint commissions made up of historians from Armenia, Turkey and other countries.

The other reason why the Turks and Turkish governments do not accept the label of genocide is that the Turkish documents and family stories the Turkish people heard from their own grandparents do not comply with an Armenian genocide.

The Turkish Archives demostrate:

that the Armenians inflicted massacres upon Turks/Muslims from the beginning of 1890's;

that when the deportation were under way, the Armenians of the big cities (and Katholic and Protestan Armenians) were exempted;

that officials who were found faulty during the deportations were court marshalled in early 1916 (out of 1673 who stood in court, 67 were given death sentences, 524 jail term, 68 row boat and monetary punishments by Talat Pasha government, before WWI ended);

that in December 1918, a new law letting the Armenians return their homes and claim their properties was issued and that many of them returned their homes,

that those who returned their homes cooperated with the French and English armies and fought in these armies individually wearing their uniforms during the Turkish Freedom War and

that the documents presented by the Armenians to support their views are full of forgeries.
