Large universities and specialist institutions come out on top in the latest ranking of Swedish institutions of higher education.

Overall, Karolinska institutet (KI), followed by Handelshögskolan in Stockholm and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet – SLU) are at the top of the 2009 list from the independent academic group Urank.

For the last seven years, KI has also topped another ranking by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Southern Sweden (Sydsvenska industri- och handelskammaren).

Urank bases their assessment on official statistics and evaluates factors such as teacher competence, ratio of instructors to students and research and library facilities.

A new section of the 2009 ranking compared three different academic areas, which produced somewhat different results than the overall list.

Within health and medicine, the University of Lund comes out above University of Gothenburg and KI. Lund also fares best in the area of technology and natural sciences, followed by the University of Uppsala and Chalmers in Gothenburg.

Within humanities and social sciences, Handelshögskolan in Stockholm comes out on top, followed by Uppsala and Lund.

More and more importance is being attached to such rankings. A few weeks ago, the Swedish government put forth a proposal for an independent group to assess the various education programmes offered by Swedish higher education institutions and divide tax payments accordingly.

Karolinska could be the very top international medical school, if only more investment was made in new areas of research, such as functional genomics and systems biology! Biology is undergoing a major revolution and one has to work hard to keep up with the fast moving field! It may already be too late in 5 years from now.

The ranking put a few small specialist schools at the top that offer a limited number of specilist degrees

Then the traditional 'Old* Unversities

Then the other Universities

With the small colleges that don't have full University status at the bottom

However it's worth looking at the detailed tables that rank a number of different study areas - universities are sometimes specialised in particular subjects.

Also rankings can only give a very generalised picture of which place is best

The whole ranking is

1 Karolinska institutet

2 Handelshögskolan i Stockholm

3 Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet

4 Uppsala universitet

5 Lunds universitet

6 Chalmers tekniska högskola

7 Göteborgs universitet

8 Linköpings universitet

9 Kungl. Tekniska högskolan

10 Stockholms universitet

11 Umeå universitet

12 Luleå tekniska universitet

13 Högskolan i Borås

14 Södertörns högskola

15 Örebro universitet

16 Mittuniversitetet

17 Växjö universitet

18 Malmö högskola

19 Karlstads universitet

20 Mälardalens högskola

21 Högskolan i Jönköping

22 Högskolan Kristianstad

23 Högskolan Väst

24 Högskolan Dalarna

25 Högskolan i Kalmar

26 Högskolan i Halmstad

27 Blekinge tekniska högskola

28 Högskolan i Gävle

29 Högskolan i Skövde

30 Högskolan på Gotland

At least we know whose good in computer science:

http://www.kth.se/aktuellt/1.54357?l=en_UK

Not easy to beat the world's top universities in that field in programming. Wonder how some of the others fared . . . .

So much for meaningless rankings. They should always be interpreted carefully.

"At least we know whose good in computer science: "

What a goon….

Thanks to Slovakia and Asia who donate some brains to Sverige. So some Swedish imbeciles will brag about their achievements…..

@M-Larson

How can you be sure? Do you study or work at KTH or Karolinska?
10:33 April 7, 2010 by M-Larson
@Luke35711

You are a moron as your fellow @dsc

First of all, YES I have master's degree from KTH. But that isn't the point.

The point is: the retard buffoon @dsc is proudly bragging about (http://www.kth.se/aktuellt/1.54357?l=en_UK), and he didn't notice that the teamwork has one guy from Slovakia and the another is Asian.

That's why I commented on him.

Finally, you lumpen (@Luke35711) came out of the blue and ask me "How can you be sure? Do you study or work at KTH or Karolinska?" How on earth does your question make any sense in this context? Which side (or which hole) of the palnet you live?
20:07 April 7, 2010 by Jan M
Emotional. One question though. Why is it headline news that Karolinska has come top? Disproportionate amounts of funding compared to other Swedish institutions, political power gained by hosting the Nobel Committee. If it didn't come top that would be news. Nothing to talk about as it stands. More interesting question. Is it feeling too comfortable/self-satisfied to do really good research?
