Stockholm airport mulls driver toll

Published: 10 Apr 10 10:16 CET | Print version

Stockholm-Arlanda airport is considering the introduction of a 100 kronor ($14) toll for cars entering the terminal area in a bid to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, Stockholm daily Dagens Nyheter reports.

The move comes as the airport struggles to meet its current emissions targets. Since flight emissions are almost impossible for a single airport to limit, the airport is instead mulling the option of trimming its emissions through a reduction in car traffic.

Arlanda is set to submit its application for new environmental targets at the end of this year. The airport requires permission from the government before it can charge a toll to drivers.

If implemented, the proposal recommends that car drivers pay 50 kronor on their way in to the airport and a further 50 kronor on their way out from 2012. But airport authorities stressed that the levy would only come into force if there was a concurrent improvement in rail and bus services to and from the airport.

"Otherwise it's just a punishment tax and we don't want that," airport spokesman Jan Lindqvist told Dagens Nyheter.

Drivers of environmentally friendly "green cars" would not be required to pay the toll, while airport staff and truck drivers would pay a reduced charge of 20 kronor each way.

Great idea but please reduce the price of the Arlanda Express for families living in Stockholm. It is ridiculous that it costs more to take a family by train than take the car and leave it in the LT CP for two weeks. No matter how gren the Arlanda Express claims to be it is too much on my wallet. Also maybe they could tie in with a taxi firm to give an all inclusive price for taxi & train from anywhere in the inner-stad. Just suggestions on how I could become greener.

Great idea my bum!

i for one wish to drive and pick up my relatives or friends that have never been to the country and not be slapped with 100 kroners ontop of the stupid parking price

Poor travellers are being fooled by 'Dioxide emissions'

But what you do? You must pay the tax because you need to use Arlanda.

It reminds a Movie which robbers had control over crossing border and used to get money from drivers . that was illegal but here it is legal coz u get kvitto.

Even if they improve the public transport it will only be helpful to people who live in Stockholm. I live in Upplands Väsby which is 15 mins drive from Arlanda - to take public transport I have to take a bus then a train then another bus which takes over an hour and 20 mins. I would gladly take public transport but the amount of effort and time consumed is crazy.

I am happy to live in Malmo, I use Copenhagen Airport instead.

Wait a minute, who says the same stupid thing won't happen here too.

The way it is going, I may soon start paying for my breathe since I emit CO2 :)

You Swedes are idiots, pure and simple. But at least resident Swedes will pay this fee, mostly. I assume that, as usual, state employees (What, 70% of the population?) will be exempt from the charge. And the diplomats, of course.

Idiots, idiots!

The sooner this climate rubbish goes the way of SARS,Y2K,Overpopulation,Oil crisis, etc, etc, the better.
08:17 April 11, 2010 by misssh
your right nifty!

this just another way to control the people and get more money for the rich to be richer and the decrease of the climate is a natural process we are only a very small part of that process but all of the world leaders see a big chance to make people pay one way or another.

there is only one word for it GREED

There is so much about this article that seems suspicious.

How much emissions are actually being generated by cars on Arlanda property in the first place? It seems that there is only about a kilometer or two where you're actually driving there. The amount of emissions you're generating at Arlanda is miniscule in the whole scheme of things, especially when compared to those generated by a giant airliner moving around before and after takeoff.

I'm wondering if this toll is not really for emission reduction but to pay a fine for not meeting their goals. In that case, since the goals are a bit arbitrary to begin with, I would argue that they should change their target to another arbitrary, though higher, level. :-) However, if they're not having to pay a fine then I would guess that some bureaucrat is just trying to increase their budget by using a 'green' excuse.

And lastly, the idea to charge a toll on BOTH entry and exit is just stupid. Every car entering has to leave at some point so why wouldn't you just charge one time. Charging twice provides no additional advantage but just doubles the price of infrastructure and labor while increasing the chances of congestion and delays.

One thing these people should also consider is that, for some customers, they may actually encourage them to generate more CO2. It only takes me 30 minutes to drive to Arlanda but 90 minutes to Skavsta. I try to use Arlanda because it's more convenient but as they increase prices, the more likely I'll be to use Ryanair on more flights, and generate 3 times the emissions.

@maxbrando

Whatever the rights and wrongs of this, this attitude of yours leads me to wonder what the heck you're doing in Sweden. Why don't you f%%% off back to whichever shithole you come from. And if you are there, then why do you bother?
13:03 April 12, 2010 by Random
Seagull....

Why the insults?? Every person is entitled to a view...I assume you are Swedish and are very proud and protective of your country...thats normal...but why through the insults because someone disagrees with policies??

Im sick of people slagging off foreigners...you should here the Swedes complain when they are abroad (I heard they were ranked 2nd at complaining behind the Brittish?)

Narrowed minded views!!
23:51 April 15, 2010 by aaww
why people still believe that CO2 crap? or it is just a made up reason to charge you anyway.
13:10 April 16, 2010 by leerobo
stop charging silly money for the arlanda express train and bring the taxis into line and then maybe i would stop driving to the airport or maybe let ryanair go from there and you would save tons of CO2 and wear and tear on the E4

Plus does the airport managers really thing the public is that stupid to believe that its an enviromental tax to help cut CO2, yeah right , you have a million billion trees in the this country. surely that must count for something.
08:36 April 23, 2010 by seagull
Nope, not Swedish. But when someone says, and I quote "You Swedes are idiots, pure and simple.", it isn't a disagreement on policies. If that person is actually living here, I wonder why, with such a stupid attitude.
