Gothenburg sweet shop selling 'cannabis'

A sweet shop in central Gothenburg has started selling synthetic drugs that have not yet been classified as narcotics but whose effect is the same as cannabis.

The products are a mix of herbs sprayed with the synthetic cannabis compound cannabinoid. When smoked they reportedly prompt a similar reaction in the body to marijuana.

While the products are legally available for the time being, customers looking for an inebriating stupor will have to fork out 379 kronor ($53) for a three gramme portion, reports the Göteborgs-Posten daily.

"As a private individual I can say that I would not like my child to go shopping there," said Håkan Börjesson, chief investigator in the narcotics division.

The products have long been a thorn in the side of anti-drugs campaigners as police can not intervene and seize substances not formally classified as drugs. When the products are eventually classified as narcotics, manufacturers simply adjust the chemical make up and business continues as usual.

Until recently trade has been restricted to the internet, but now the Gothenburg confectioner has expanded into the controversial sideline.

Kai Knudsen, drug expert and consultant at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital, has warned against all use of synthetic cannabinoids. Several types of the drugs have already been classified as narcotics and a number of variants are currently subject to an investigation by the Public Health Institute (Folkhälsoinstitutet).

"Some synthetic cannabinoids can even be more dangerous than natural cannabis," Kai Knudsen warned.

"The products have long been a thorn in the side of anti-drugs campaigners"

Boo hoo hoo. Poor things, I feel so sorry for them. Don't worry, I am sure it will be banned sometime soon and then you can be happy again.

Reminds me of the film Demolition Man. "Can you pass the salt?" "Salt is bad for you so it's illegal".

If they're going to outlaw everything that's bad for you, they might as well go with sex first and foremost in this country. Chlamydia is a HUGE problem here. Surely that's not good for you?

""As a private individual I can say that I would not like my child to go shopping there," said Håkan Börjesson, chief investigator in the narcotics division."

Instead, he will be probably very happy to see his children, once 20 years old, to go to Systembolaget and get totally drunk any single week-end...

As far as I know, nobody has never died from the use of Marijuana, thousands die any year due to use of alcohol... but they say that Marijuana is bad... logic, isn't it?

Marijuana IS bad - I saw many of my friends at Uni move on to stronger drugs because of it. I could see the mentality...hmm this isn't so harmful so I bet the others are n't as bad as people say they are. Marijuana is also much stronger now than it used to be and can be laced with other substances.

I wish I could move back to Sweden tomorrow. :)

@LailaC1: And I have seen alcohol destroy even more lives, so what is your point?

All drugs, including alcohol, is bad for you if you lose control. People who lose control with Marijuana are also those who tend to binge drink and wonder why they are walking up naked in the gutter Sunday morning.

I suggest you be so daring and visit The Netherlands and see how it actually works out there. Most users of marijuana are tourists, and still The Netherlands has the lowest use of marijuana in Europe.

Also, you can not get laced marijuana, but hash can be laced. In any situation, if you get laced hash you should consider getting a new dealer and not the mention know what you are buying.

And still there is no evidence that marijuana is a gateway drug. I know enough people who never used marijuana and went straight for the hard drugs.

Your anecdotal evidence and assumptions means nothing when compared to facts and reality.

The Swedes need drugs of all varieties just to make their pathetic, uniform lives bearable. Don't take away their escapes.

And this from a country that criminalize Ethnic Swedes for a harmless stimulant Khat. amazing. This day and age is far cry away from 1989, when khat law was enacted in Sweden. thanks to the wider use of the internet(nowdays), Sweden's dirty linen is being washed out in public.. I remember when the Taliban in Afghanistan decreed that the Minority Hindus wear a yellow cloth, so that they can be single out.(for harsh treatment). Sweden , Scandanvia, and the rest of the western world were up in arms and the old tired cliche for "respect for human rights was the slogan"... please pray do tell me why this law that targets Somalis, Ethiopians and Yemanis is any different than that of the Taliban ?

Human rights my behind!!.

@spy: And from which country do you come from that is so extremely perfect?
23:56 April 14, 2010 by foreverblue
I love cannabis. It's a shame that there is such a heavy police crackdown on cannabis in Sweden. I hear that there isn't much of a responsible-use culture, and that it's more confined to those who consume harder drugs as well. Pretty much the exact opposite of where I come from, where it is quite likely that your dad the doctor or your mom the teacher hold positive views of the it.

Just legalise Cannabis and no one will really bother about these sweets. In fact no one will buy them because Cannabis is cheaper and better for you.

Why is nobody addressing the extreme damage to the respiratory system that result from the inhalation of concentrated smoke? Most fatalities from fire are from pulmonary edema by 'smoke inhalation.' The raw combustion products of any vegetation includes several carcinogens - NOx, SOx, CO, PAHs, etc. COPD is a one-way street - downhill. Smoking any plant, for any reason, is self-destructive.

I am a legal medical cannabis user in Canada. It is terrible to see the results of prohibition. People ingesting an unknown chemical cocktail sprayed on questionable plant materials and then getting smoked. There has been absolutely no testing of these products and yet they are something people can get legally. While Cannabis has been used safely and industriously as a textile and virtually any form of fibre or biomass use, including high quality food, and it's obvious uses as a medicine. Add to that it's preferable side-effects when compared to legal alcohol and the ties to organised crime and the paranoia of constantly fearing the police.. those negative side effects aren;t even results of the drug. They are results of society.

There is only one sane and socially responsible way to protect our kids from drugs and that's through education and supply positive activites and role models. If the only place to get your drugs is in some tweaker flat or from some gang banger, then that's your new influence. Put the drugs in the hands of responsible, respectable businesswomen and life will be much better for all involved.
