Robberies raise prospect of retail cash ban

The head of the Swedish Work Environment Authority (Arbetsmiljöverket) has raised the prospect of a ban on cash in Sweden's retail stores to help tackle the growing problem of robbery.

The authority's director-general Mikael Sjöberg refused to rule out the drastic measure in an interview on Wednesday.

"You can't rule anything out, it just depends on how risky the situation is. We have very extensive possibilities to explore," Sjöberg told trade union publication Handelsnytt.

The authority is set to conduct an inspection of 3,000 small stores across Sweden to chart opportunities aimed at improving the working environment.

"It is not acceptable that people go to work in fear and concerned that they could be subject to a robbery, which does actually happen in this sector," Mikael Sjöberg said.

The Work Environment Authority has previously pushed through cash bans on buses in Sweden after a spate of hold-ups.

Robberies against retailers accounted for 9 percent of all robbery cases reported in Sweden in 2007, according to statistics from the National Council for Crime Prevention (Brå). From just under 400 cases per annum in 1987, the number of cases had more than doubled by 2007 after a peak in 2005.

I have a different idea. Make it law that all retailers have an oozie behind the counter.

Or better still, one of those israeli made mini submachine guns, the UZI

how about changing back to barter system? sweden get rid of cash robbery totally.
15:37 April 14, 2010 by peropaco
Very stupid idea. Not everyone has a credit card Mikael dumbass Sjöberg .
16:13 April 14, 2010 by booka
Alot of young teens who dont have a bank card will not be able to buy anything.

Guns for all ! !

Oh it's going to be so sweet putting 200 items through the till at the supermarket only to leave them uncollected because they won't accept cash.

That would soon put a huge dent in this control driven agenda if a substantial number of people refused to kow tow to this nonsense.
17:07 April 14, 2010 by PonceDeLeon
Mikael Sjöberg is hilarious, he should get a medal. Better yet, he should run for Prime Minister. Please!!! Do these politicos ever think before they speak. There should be a "Tax" on dumb ideas. We should not have to be subjected to their idiocy, day after day. The Politicians in Sweden crack me up, day after day. Love your Show...
17:33 April 14, 2010 by kateland
Who cares about the teens, they don't pay taxes.
18:55 April 14, 2010 by seychelle_18
I like the idea of barter system. Let's go back to Flinstone age... Hahahahaha
21:45 April 14, 2010 by Tiddler
This man is proposing the end of cash.

Cash is a means of exchange, so if one cannot exchange it for goods then it is useless.

Is he stupid or is he just a dangerous tool for the puppet masters?
23:09 April 14, 2010 by old git
He's not a politician he's a zealous and/or chicken civil servant - even worse, you can't vote them out.
23:39 April 14, 2010 by Mr. Puppy
100 years from now nobody will pay for anything with cash, it'll all be done via debit cards. If you're all too blind to see how obvious it that that will happen then I hereby charge you 100 SEK per word from all of your dumb comments as a "stupidity tax".
00:33 April 15, 2010 by Tiddler
Puppy (is that by by name or nature),

If you have a merchant account then I will pay you by debit card.

See the problem?
06:58 April 15, 2010 by Nemesis
There has been proposals by the Irish governmnt to do the same.
09:05 April 15, 2010 by americanska
This Is stupid. You own a retail business and now you can't run your business normally. Because the government doesn't want to have to protect you from criminals.

PROTECTION OF CITIZENS IS THE PRIMARY ROLL OF GOVERNMENT.

Mr. Puppy - people thought that would be the case by 2010 as well. And that we'd have flying cars and time machines. The fact is cash will never be completely eliminated. Regardless, it's no place for the government to tell us what we have to do in daily life.

Maybe go earn your 100SEK, probably a far fetched idea for you.
12:51 April 15, 2010 by Swedesmith
Getting rid of cash will not eliminate crime, the criminals will just find more tech savvy ways to steal. It will, however, make every monetary transaction electronically track-able. Good-bye black market, hello more taxes.
14:49 April 15, 2010 by cbeynch
Instead of inconeviencing decent Swedes by forcing us to change our habits, isn't it the criminal problem that should be addressed? Whe should we decent, tax paying, Swedes have to cave in to these useless lowlifes. Change the laws. Stop coddling the criminals. And if that doesn't help, shoot to kill! Are we commanded by criminals these days? Think of that when you go to the polls in september. Defeat socialism!
15:13 April 15, 2010 by soultraveler3
How about having / allowing the police actually do their jobs and protecting the people and business owners of Sweden instead? Why not make the laws and jail time actually mean something instead of being a joke and a free vacation in a chushy cell??

This is such a stupid idea, besides teenagers not being able to buy things, (they make up a huge percentage of retail sales btw) there's alot of people who don't want debit cards and credit cards.

It wouldn't deter criminals anyways, they'd either find a way to change to high-tech crime or what I think is more likely and more dangerouss they'd start to do "smash and grab" type of robberies.
15:28 April 15, 2010 by CarlBlack
So this idiot is also responsible for the impossibility to pay cash in buses? In combination with the fact that they don't take maestro cards it's a perfect way how to be denied travel when you really need it.
06:22 April 16, 2010 by PonceDeLeon
"Taking away Cash" just another personal freedom lost.

This Orwellian State, sees no limit to their power over the people. If you are subjected to use a card, which will have a register. Every transaction you make can be scrutinized. Beware.

Just because you are paranoid, does not mean, they are not out to get you. What is stop the Gov't, in the future, from telling you what you can and cannot purchase.

The more freedom is defined the less you have. "The water is beginning to boil, yet you still refuse to jump out of the pot...
10:38 April 16, 2010 by mkvgtired
Politicians come up with the best ideas. Think of the lines during Christmas, "No, I'm sorry sir, I ran it through twice but your cash is still coming back declined."
10:46 April 16, 2010 by avatar
If many people don't have credit/debit cards, well they should get one. 'It's 21st century, use the tools of your time'.
12:43 April 16, 2010 by the fonz
How ridiculous -

Apart from all the valid comments here - has he considered what tourists to Sweden would use if they didn't want to use their own cards?

Also, if the SEK in cash form ceased to exist - a black market in another currency would be born probably EUR or USD - just like in Africa and the Middle East where their own currencies are either not convertible or not liquid enough.

This is just the infrastructure preceding the coming of the MARK OF THE BEAST economy of the ONE WORLD GOVERNMENT, where you may not like religion NOW, but unless you worship the Beast and take on His mark, you will not be able to buy or sell. This is found in the much maligned Book of Revelations. Pity. Europe will be first to fall under the sway with its Antii-God current philosophy. Folk will be initially happy during that time. America will be neutralized at the loss of 40 percent of the people and the resulting shambles of its own infrastructure, and Europe would rebound for the first 3 and one half years of what is going to be the last seven years of wretched human civilization. But during that time, if procedures such as written above become more commonplace to replace money by a mark (check out our American made capsule that can be placed under the skin we use on our own animals to identify them when lost - sorry about that - actually - we tried to discourage it) the mark will at that time MEAN you are in the religion of the BEAST. I will not be around during that time...but some of you might be. A true pity to have lost your faith in God earlier than America will. Do not worry, we are falling right behind you...but that is until forty percent estimated of believers in this country will disappear.

Just my thoughts (I am from USA)

I almost always use a debit card its allot better than cash at stores because no change counting or change giving. Stores in America keep bulk amounts of cash in safes (safe can only be accesses by armed guard) or in a device where the teller puts cash in locked box that teller can't get access. People barter in America but it is taxed making it very hard to use legally. If you have barter systems they need to be tax free because you don't make money with barter you just do something for somebody and they intern do something for you. Also in the US you can get social cash credits and food credits on a Master Card which is like a Visa there is no charge for this. Some places also sell rechargeable Visa, Master Card or American Express. So in theory you could barter for some things pay cash for some things and use social credits for other things. America is also full of banks that don't charge for checks or bankcards (didn't used to be free years ago). In the US they even have a key chain that you put in front of the register or gas pump and they debit your bank account. In the US they have some interesting credit cards one gives you 3 dollars for every hundred you spend at a grocery that's a food store in the US. If you pay the card every month you keep the bonus money without other fees. In Japan Nokia has developed a system by which you pay using your cell phone especially at vending machines. Any way hope you found this to be interesting. As I do not know Swedish culture forgive me if I have said anything offensive.

So our hard earned cash is so much safer from theft and loss in a bank. Do you really trust the banks?

I feel honour bound to beat these half baked ideas with something even stranger:

Maybe cash should be made so big and heavy that thieves can not run away with it. Nobody would want to use it so everybody would be happy with a card. Teenagers would benefit from the exersize to counter the McDonalds effect. You would never loose change down the back of the sofa. The benfits would be numerous. The implemenation would be crazy.
17:35 April 19, 2010 by joe90
Dont judge a system until you try it. The busses are much better without cash as there was very much fear of being robbed among bus drivers.

Now you need a prepaid way of getting on the bus either a sim card type bus card (oyster Card ) or a prepaid strip cupon.no cash no guns or knives.people without cards or cupons let them on no problems.and it saves time as well.

the cupon does not allow you too be tracked by your card number. It is a better way.
10:03 April 20, 2010 by JeremyKonstenius
In the USA our banking system is most like the Swedish system in that it protects customers with government insurance. All transactions take place on FedWire and you can't look at it without a warrant. Another interesting fact is that any citizen of the world can walk into a US bank and ask to see its books. Also about comment 1 and 2 don't you think a Swedish K would be better.

The more efficient thief is going to take all your digital money and all the money of all the world. The shop/cash robber is probably forced to rob because he was already robbed by the thieves that are financial terrorists known in what used to be America as the "FED/NWO". After they steal all you posess they want you to die. A eugenicists figures -out how to kill creatively. Some exterminators fly Chemtrail bombers while some poison your drinking water. Franken food is going to sterilize you and sicken you with MGO crops. Satan is getting a bad name from his workers tactics, don't you think?
