Passengers stranded as ash cloud nears

Cancelled departures have left Stockholm-Arlanda airport thronged with disappointed passengers after a cloud of volcanic ash from Iceland caused aviation authorities to shut down Swedish airspace.

Air traffic will come to a halt at all airports bar one by 6pm on Thursday. Visby airport on the island of Gotland is to continue operating flights until 10pm.

Katarina Samuelsson was one of many passengers at Arlanda airport hit by cancellations.

"We were supposed to fly to London at 11.10am but the flight was cancelled."

She and her friend were making a last gasp attempt to get out of the country before services ground to a complete halt and were hoping to secure tickets to New York.

"We're flexible and will go wherever the flights are going. We don't have any set destination; we're quite adventurous," she said.

Sören Carlander from Norrtälje had booked a flight to Iceland to see one of the country's volcanoes, little realising that it would reach him first.

"When I saw the first eruption on TV last week I thought: I have to see that," he said.

Though the plane he had hoped to travel with had not even left Iceland, he said he still harboured hopes of arriving in Iceland later in the evening.

Aviation authority (LFV) spokesperson Jan Lindqvist said LFV was attempting to release information to the general public via the media and its own website. Lindqvust said he understood the frustration felt by many travellers who had complained about the lack of information.

"It's hard for us to forecast how air traffic is going to function. We're working on obtaining information from air traffic control, which has contact with meteorologists and others who are explaining the consequences this might have," he said.

Airlines are then informed of developments by LFV before passing on the latest information to their own passengers.

We said send 'CASH'

Yours sincerely

@ ringorm..... That really is not funny! Icelandic people are being evacuated from their homes. Other people's travel plans are disrupted and that is the best you can comment. My father taught me that when I have nothing constructive to say, I should be quiet.... unless I am voicing an opinion in support of others. Maybe that is one you could benefit from learning.

@ ringorm: thumbs up!

@ Suzie F: you should learn also other rule: every situation is better managed with humor than stress and worrying

Aww come on Suzie that's funny I don't care who you are, your Dad should have taught you the best way to deal with something you can't change anyway is to laugh it off. "We said send cash", hahahaha
19:34 April 15, 2010 by Purisai
oh Susie. Take it easy. I can imagine you're worried but @ringorm is only lightening the situation.

My husband has been gone to USA for two weeks. He was finally to arrive in Stockholm on Saturday but now it's become iffy. Today I broke my ankle and I have two little girls to take care of. I was sooo waiting for hubby to take over but looks like I will have to hold fort longer but I still managed to laugh at "we said cash". I think that it was witty.

Let's just be thankful that the airlines were wise to shut down the traffic before more tragedies got added to the equation. I'd much rather have my husband safe wherever he is.

@ Suzie. Jeeez! Lighten up! You sound like you need a good Icelandic Spa and a couple of stor-starks. Just because Iceland have been living beyond their means doesn't mean they're not prepared for glacier meltdowns. before you attack ringorm take a swipe at the Politicians in Iceland and the Global Warming mockers. Send CASH not DUST ... I thought it was predictable but still funny. I think even some Icelandic expats would find it funny. OK maybe "yours sincerely, UK" was a bit arrogant but that's to be expected from an ignoramus.

I've been stranded at Heathrow and Charles de Gaule before ... I'd much rather be stranded at Arlanda than about 90% of the airports I've been to. Still ... it sucks for all the people who are traveling.

I agree with both ringorm and Suzie.

Ringorm's comment was funny and not too offensive, but Suzie is right that sometimes being respectful seems to be a forgotten art.

@CarlBlack: Just because you are respectful does not mean you are stressed or worried. Humour is good, but being serious now and then doesn't hurt either.
