Opposition retains opinion poll initiative

With the general election just five months away, Sweden's centre-right coalition government has closed the gap on the left-green opposition to 3.5 percentage points, according to a new Sifo opinion poll published in Svenska Dagbladet.

The Social Democrats, Greens and Left Party scored a combined total of 48.5 percent, while the Moderates, Liberals, Centre Party and Christian Democrats received the support of 45 percent of those polled.

"Historically, statistics have shown that the bloc leading in April also tends to win the election. That has happened eleven times out of thirteen. Those are the statistics the government has to beat," Sören Holmberg, professor of political science at Gothenburg University, told Svenska Dagbladet.

With 4.9 percent of respondents pledging their support to the Sweden Democrats, the far-right nationalist party would hold the balance of power in the Swedish parliament if an election were to be held today.

All changes recorded since March were within the margin of error, with the Green Party recording the biggest swing, down 1.6 points.

"My main commentary is that things are very stable. Hardly anything has happened," said Sören Holmberg.

April poll results, Sifo (change since March in parentheses)

Moderate Party 29.8 (-1.0)
Centre Party 4.9 (+0.2)
Liberal Party 6.2 (+0.3)
Chrisitian Democrats 4.1 (+0.3)

Centre-right coalition: 45.0 (-0.2)

Social Democrats 34.1 (+0.1)
Left Party 5.4 (-0.2)
Green Party 9.0 (-1.6)

Left-green opposition: 48.5 (-1.7)

Sweden Democrats 4.9 (+1.1)

Others 1.6 (+0.7)

What can we expect if Sweden Democrats get into parliament?
11:10 April 18, 2010 by miss79
reptile, we get al qaeda recruters in the future..then it be a big kaos..thats the problem

The fact that the Social Democrats garners most of its support from lazy union workers, and from the immigrant population who believe the social democrat mantra that they will "get more" (without doing anything), it should tell us something about the situation in Sweden today. It is of critical importance to Sweden's future that Swedish voters show Sahlin, and her marxist tax raising thugs, the door. I'd rather have SD in a coalition, although I never voted for SD, than a return to Comrade Palme's dictatorial whip lash. Defeat socialism in september!

Too bad for Sweden ... Wonder which country will attract the new generation of doers who will leave Sweden as the taxes continue to rise and the unions make industry impossible ? Canada ? UK ?

any ideas ? wherever the go that's where you should invest

It doesn't matter whether the blue side or the red/green side wins in the elections since they're both the same :(

As long as we have the democraticaly elected Goverment which is serving the interest of the people ex. jobblees and high taxetions is minimazed. Then we have no problems whether Green, Red or yellow name it will wins.

@suoperturbo and @jam5525; You are both wrong! It makes a major difference who heads up government. It would be a veritable disaster for Sweden to permit the socal democrats to get anywhere near Stockholm. Unless of course you are faux communist, making believe you are for democratic pinciples. Their type of socialism, and tax raising thugs, are passé outdated long ago, and must be eliminated.
