Sami district rejects wind power compensation

The Sami district of Östra Kikkejaure in the far north of Sweden has rejected an offer of compensation for wind turbines planned in the area, arguing that they disturb their reindeer.

The district was offered 5,000 kronor ($695) per annum per turbine - a total of 5.5 million per annum, on completion of the project, but has demanded a significantly higher sum, local newspaper Piteå-Tidningen reports.

"We say no. The money is not in parity with the problems that this causes and the threat against our reindeer herding," Anders Ruth at the district told the newspaper.

The government has given its backing to the construction of 1,101 wind turbines in Markbygden, an area that is used by reindeer herders from Östra Kikkejaure for the winter grazing of their 4,000 strong flock.

The wind turbine project will affect about 25 percent of the grazing areas and the government has ruled that the Sami should be compensated.

"The same number of reindeer have to be fed from a reduced area, which will be exploited harder. It won't work, and it is not possible to find alternative grazing areas," Ruth told the newspaper.

The Sami argue that without sufficient grazing the reindeer will have to be given extra feed and this comes at a price, reported to be around twice that offered by Svevind, the wind power firm behind the project.

The planned wind power investments in Markbygden are estimated to cost 40-60 billion kronor and will generate as much energy as two nuclear reactors.

An estimated 20,000 Sami live in Sweden, with the population concentrated in the far north of the country.

Sweden contains a total of 51 'samebys', the administrative and financial district collectives which by law have the sole right to conduct reindeer herding in Sweden.

Currently, about 10 percent of Sweden’s Sami population belong to a sameby (literally ‘Sami village’). In addition to the right to control reindeer herding, members of a sameby also have hunting and fishing rights within its designated area.

There are too many reindeer and they are thrashing the environment. Screw the bloody reindeer and let the Sami get jobs like the rest of us.

Well done to my fellow nomads, carry on the good work and refuse the merger state buy outs. I think its a shame on the other wise almost perfect status of my beloved Sweden that it has failed to ratify the UN Convention on indigenous people land rights.

Sweden should leave Lapland. End the occupation of Lapland and free the Lapi people.

I hope Sweden does not take the route the Anglo Saxons took ever since they arrived in present day US in 15th century. After breaking 400 agreements, they had entered with the indigenous people, they drove them westwards into the most infertile corner of that big country. In the 15th century, the population of the indigenous people numbered 2 million; after continuous and indiscriminate onslaught on their communities over a long period of time their population fell down to two hundred thousand in 1950s. It is now too late to redress the past!

A penetration of technology in their midst of the Sami people might appear innocent but it can turn nasty as more and more ideas come to be imposed on them.
14:16 April 22, 2010 by spongepaddy
Yes, let's take the Sami's fertile land and drive them westward. To Norway.

I kind of have to wonder about what taking 2 nuclear power plants worth of energy out of the wind system will do to the movement of weather systems. It will probably happen somewhere other than in Sweden, but obviously we know that all the environment is connected. I am all for wind farms, I just want to be aware of the consequences before we start using more power just because we think it is harmless.

I love the idea of taking more sun light as I think in some parts of the world it is negligible to do so for issues like the depletion of the ozone. But is there a risk of taking away pressure systems from places that are depending on them for certain events?
15:43 April 22, 2010 by Kooritze
Well done Sami Folk......stand your ground
22:45 April 22, 2010 by spongepaddy
And by the way, if there are so many reindeer up there being subsidised by the taxpayer, then where is all the reindeer meat? Shouldn't it be showing up in ICA, next to the pork? At reduced prices? Or are they just eating it all?

And I know, let's pay them lots more money to shoot wolves so they can sustain their unsustainable reindeer populations and maintain a way of life that is clearly a developmental dead end. Best use of tax money. Ever.

Just put up the bloody wind turbines and ignore the whining.

Why don't you go and live in the UK, France, Germany or Denmark where your kind belong????
10:55 April 23, 2010 by spongepaddy
Kronaboy: Now if I had said such a thing about the Sami I would be up in court. But YOU can say it about me and it's just fine. Isn't that just a bit strange?

And what's your point? My kind? And who are MY kind exactly, you that is so wise?
12:58 April 23, 2010 by Kronaboy
@spongepaddy

The difference is my comments are not motivate by your race but by your lack of intellectual capacity. So why don't you join your fellow retarded racist morons in the UK, Denmark, Germany and France you should fit right in, you would just be one of the crowd, probably get a job in their police force.
14:47 April 23, 2010 by spongepaddy
@Kronaboy: An interesting comment, full of hatred and anger!

Are you saying the Sami are a different race? They must be, if you consider my comments "racist". Prove that please.

And why am I a racist? I am for treating people equally, regardless of their race. No special treatment for anybody. You think the Sami SHOULD be treated differently, precisely because of their race. So who's the racist now?

You are smarter than I am? Prove that too please. Because I bet you're not.

And why do you think I am from the UK, Denmark, Germany or France? Now you are stereotyping me. And I think that's a bit racist, to be honest.
15:44 April 23, 2010 by Kronaboy
To have anger and hatred would require for you to matter, what makes you think warrant such a waste of my time????
15:55 April 23, 2010 by spongepaddy
@Kronaboy

Because, if you start a discussion, then you should finish it. But now, by avoiding all of my points, you show that you have no answer to them. Which means that you admit that you have lost. You have noting else to add.

But that's fine, I will forgive you for being wrong. And have a nice weekend.
19:31 April 23, 2010 by Kronaboy
you are one sad person, wow I would hate to be you...
19:49 April 23, 2010 by spongepaddy
Maybe you would, but that doesn't remove the fact that you can't reply to my arguments. Can you? Because if you can't, then you are wrong, you have no defence, and you have lost. Or what rules of discussion were YOU following? House rules, perhaps?

And I do not plan to insult your character, as you seem happy doing to me, since that is not the issue here. Which also gives me the moral high ground, as well as being correct. So, do you want to admit defeat now, or later?
08:50 April 24, 2010 by Kronaboy
How old are you 15-16?
10:36 April 24, 2010 by spongepaddy
Why do you ask that, Kronaboy? Do you normally get beaten in arguments by teenagers?

If you want to defend what you have said, then do it. Address my points and argue like a man and stop these petty little insults because you have run out of things to say. Unless you have nothing more to say, which looks likely.

I think it is very clear to anybody reading this discussion who has won. When one person continues to try and discuss factually, and the other just throws insults, then the person who is correct is obvious.

You lose, Kronaboy. And my age is irrelevant, because you lose anyway.
22:46 April 24, 2010 by HALE
Good for the Sami, I'm sure the power companies aren't going to give you half of their annual profit, so dig in and make them pay....they made us pay alot more this winter.

It's your land and your patch of paradise.
