Princess Madeleine breaks up with fiancé

Sweden's Princess Madeleine has broken up with her fiancé Jonas Bergström, Stockholm's royal court has announced.

A statement on the royal family's website said the pair had taken a joint decision to separate after "mature consideration". The couple had reached the conclusion that it was best for both of them to move forward with separate lives, the statement said.

The decision to split follows weeks of media speculation that the couple's relationship was in trouble, including reports that Bergström had enjoyed a brief dalliance with a Norwegian handball star while on a skiing holiday.

The Princess and Bergström asked the media to show them respect and consideration following the decision.

"They need peace and quiet in this difficult situation," the court said. It added that recent intense media coverage had not made the situation easier. The statement said that no further statement would be made.

It is believed that the Princess had left the country prior to the announcement. According to media reports she boarded a plane at midday at Stockholm Arlanda Airport bound for New York.

Princess Madeleine, 27, and Bergström, 31, announced their engagement in August last year. The announcement that Madeleine was due to follow Victoria down the aisle took many royal watchers in Sweden by surprise, coming so soon after her big sister's announcement.

Last week, Queen Silvia announced that her youngest daughter would not be tying the knot later this year as previously planned amid mounting speculation about the health of the young couple's relationship.

Princess Madeleine and Jonas Bergström, who is a lawyer from the exclusive Stockholm suburb of Djursholm, have been together for eight years. On marrying the Princess, Bergström was set to receive the title Duke of Hälsingland and Gästrikland.

Must have met and shared notes with Tiger, this Jonas. But cheating on Royalty is something.

Dear Madeleine,

Next time, dont look for a guy that's in love with himself.

Your HOT... Most men would value a good woman that also looks great. Good Luck..
15:19 April 24, 2010 by peropaco
Good work Jonas. Now go get yourself a proper looking girl.
15:34 April 24, 2010 by sendia
Dude, I don't see who will be interested in you any more. Probably you are going to have a very lonely time.
15:56 April 24, 2010 by peropaco
Madeleine. I heard work is the best cure for a broken heart. Get yourself a 9 to 5 like the rest of the world and you will start feeling well soon after.

Yes! What a loser that man is - couldn't keep it in his trousers...

Now where does HRH go for a beer when she needs a shoulder to cry on?

Good riddance, Madeleine.

@pacey

what a wonderful rebound u will be, before she finally leaves u for me.
21:57 April 24, 2010 by STOCKHOMME
Certainly a lost occasion to get a modern monarchy : Madeleine certainly had to say no just because of the etiquette, she was probably willing to forgive, but she is not free. And as for Jonas, he was clearly too free. It's a cruel royal world.

Itsn't it a joke that marrige was already being talked about?. A royal family for that matter and then such a cheap infidelity scandal.

Swedes will never stop amusing me !

Waiting for Madeleine's next peak. hahaha

Maybe she wasn't giving it to him
00:59 April 25, 2010 by Swedesmith
Do you think she would be interested in a 51 year old pseudo-Swede who is willing to relocate? I'll even help with the dishes!
01:11 April 25, 2010 by cbeynch
You did the right thing Madeleine, in dumping this useless peasant. The Norwegian tramp who has been in the news lately kind of confirmed it.
03:38 April 25, 2010 by Greg in Canada
Even the Canadian news media has been reporting this story. Usually the British royals are the most watched, so its surprising to hear about Swedish royals over here.

I'd hate to be a royal. They can't even blow their nose or go to the toilet without some trashy dish rag tabloid making a story out of it.
06:03 April 25, 2010 by Tennessee Thunder
At least her chin dosen't cover three time zones.
08:46 April 25, 2010 by Zeina
I thought they were great couple I was eagrly waiting for their wedding
09:38 April 25, 2010 by Pacey
Atleast Jonas can boast that he has gone in HRH's pants more times than anyone else maybe her future husband! Now that is an extra curricular activity which will spice my CV. Maybe land me a job at Goldman Sachs!

Madeleine pls give me a second chance. I will always be faithful to you.

@ stabbull: Why do you presume she will go for a bull! The royalty doesnt like to have a big workout in bed so they dont like bulls!!
11:28 April 25, 2010 by stabbull

10:12 April 26, 2010 by J Jack
What a joke royalty has become. The 'get away with anything' opposite to what we are expected to read our kids at bedtime. Don't worry Maddie, find a charity to cause and the world will side with you against that immoral legal eagle and forget that you have been deflowered. It's a good thing that you are released from this apparent obsession to get married.
20:53 April 26, 2010 by sissygirl
I think the Princess is a pretty lady. Why are so many of you making fun of her looks? It has to suck to be a royal (except for the money)because everyone is always looking and criticizing.
10:39 April 27, 2010 by mastersamuel
YES!!! Håll upp händerna för Stureplan! Princessan betalar!!!

Jonas, if you are going to cheat, please cheat UP, not DOWN. Oh, and next time, make sure she does not have crooked teeth.
