A Stockholm pub has been voted the "Best pub in the World" in the Best of British awards for establishments outside of the UK, organized by the Daily Telegraph and British Airways.

The 2010 winner of the title is The Tudor Arms in the Östermalm area of the city which has been recognised for being "an institution in Stockholm for expats".

"I think we won as a result of almost 40 years of flying the flag for the UK in this part of the world - fantastic," said Tudor Arms landlord Chris Billowes to The Local on Tuesday.

The Tudor Arms beat off stiff competition from pubs spanning the globe - Sid's Pub in Kuala Lumpur, Carnegie's in Hong Kong, the George and Dragon in Dar-es-Salaam, the Bull's Head in Bangkok and The Royal Oak in Cape Town.

Billowes explained that the Tudor Arms is a old-style British local and punters can expect a warm, British welcome whenever they drop by which according to old UK tradition is 11.30am-11pm Monday to Friday, Saturday 1pm-11pm and Sunday 1pm-7pm, with 20 minutes drinking up time.

"Many of the other pubs are chains or run as businesses, but we are a dead ringer for a classic British pub. When you walk in you can't guess where you are, you wouldn't guess Stockholm," he said.

The Tudor Arms found out about its success last Thursday and were all set to receive the award at a gala dinner at the Westbury Hotel in London when their travel plans, and those of their co-finalists, were scuppered by the volcano flight chaos.

While the Icelandic ash had cast a shadow on the official celebrations it proved no hindrance for "the Tudor" to organize an impromptu "knees up".

"I went out and bought 40 bottles of champagne for our punters who came by on Friday, they didn't last long as you can imagine, so quizmaster Johnny is organizing a bigger do later on," said Chris Billowes.

The Daily Telegraph "Best of British" awards are organized together with British Airways and are divided into six categories - Best British Shop, Best British Social Club, Best British Restaurant, Best British Sporting Club, Best British Bar/Pub and Best British Business Club.

The 2010 competition attracted 11,000 votes from people plumping for over 600 British establishments worldwide.

Congratulations. A well deserved win. Bit steep for a bacon burger and chips though....SEK 145.
09:53 April 27, 2010 by blondelover
I don't think so just the Stockholm pubs are best in the world.. their is lot in it :)
10:09 April 27, 2010 by Åskar
I remember when they turned 20. A newspaper wrote about them that "it's the same staff as when they opened and they are as snotty as ever".
10:25 April 27, 2010 by EtoileBrilliant
@Essingen - agree entirely. With prices like that it looks like that they have gone native.
10:37 April 27, 2010 by sherkovic
if that is the best then i am interested in know what is the worst?
11:10 April 27, 2010 by Gower76
@Essingen and EtoileBrilliant - well it's not surprising that they have Stockholm prices given that they have Stockholm costs.

The Tudor Arms really is a little piece of England, for good or for bad, totally genuine. Almost disorientatingly so. Congrats to them - this will mean a lot to them.
11:42 April 27, 2010 by Beavis
This award clearly needs to relabelled "Best British theme pub abroad pub". Its no where near "best pub"

I can think of a few hundred Irish pubs/microbrewery pubs world wide that beat all of these pubs mentioned hands down!
12:16 April 27, 2010 by Plowbridge
Shame that the award is from the Telegraph. It means nothing really.

But good luck to the Tudor Arms though.
13:08 April 27, 2010 by Åskar
@Beavis, may I suggest you read the article and find out the exact name of the award.
13:49 April 27, 2010 by peropaco
Tudor serves cosmopolitan and fancy umbrella drinks. That place is no pub.
14:33 April 27, 2010 by Nicklouse
peropaco: sounds like you have not been in many British Pubs.

Beavis: So British and Irish are the same! thanks for the heads up.
14:47 April 27, 2010 by Chrispyat60
Beavis: That´s a nice thing to write about a place you visited on a daily basis very regularly for all those years before you moved to London. You must admit that the Tudor was one of you homes in Stockholm, and you loved the place!!!!!

No one is getting this right !

Swedish chicks are so pretty. So it's all about them :) whether they are visitors, bartenders, waiters or even walkers by :)

I'm from Britain, and quite honestly I think pubs like this are a little unsettling. I suppose it'd be the same for any Swedish resident to come here and find something typically Swedish, where everyone is going around saying 'hey guys, look how Swedish everything is!' It just feels too fake...

I can imagine pubs like this are popular with the Swedish more than anyone though. To me, a pub is a pub. From what I see in the picture though, it looks nothing like a British pub.
15:45 April 27, 2010 by Britswedeguy
The last place I'd want to go in Sweden would be a 'British pub'!
16:06 April 27, 2010 by Greg in Canada
Imitation British pubs are found all over the world. We some have very good ones in Canada and I've had a pint or two in other good repros in Australia and the USA. However, nothing compares to the real thing, especially some of the thatched roof country pubs in parts of southern England. Its sad that a lot of the more rural pubs in the UK have closed down.
16:17 April 27, 2010 by DAVID T
I think it's a dump
18:49 April 27, 2010 by Flygger
Wouldn't be seen dead in the place. David T seems to have summed it up.

"The last place I'd want to go in Sweden would be a 'British pub'! "

I'm with you on this. I used to go quite alot but I got fed up with the expats complaining about Swedes and Sweden, most of whom think it is below them to learn the native language. Which of course explains their negative experiences in Sweden.

The grub ain't much cop either. Nothing like real pub grub you'd expect from a traditional pub in UK. The fake fish n' chips really sticks out.
02:11 April 28, 2010 by alistairwhitman
Love the pub. Love the people. It's my local and I know most of the clientèle great place to watch footy and rugby.

Complaints be damned...it's the real deal. Up the Tudor!
03:44 April 28, 2010 by Quizmaster John
Congradulations and well done Tudor Arms on winning the award. Its a great place, with great staff, great food, and filled with great people. A little piece of England as soon as you walk through the door. A home away form home and not just for Britts but many others as well!

To Beavis: I am shocked and disappointed with your comments. The Tudor was your home almost every day before you moved to England and you even had a line of credit when funds were low. And lets not mention the fact that the Tudor gave you a job when you needed one. I guess thats gratitude for you...

And to you others out there with your negative comments: It seems that some of you have never been there and don't know what your talking about. I suggest you try a visit and get your facts straight. Others well I'm shocked and disappointed by your negative comments coming from people who drink there on a regular basis. I was brought up with the saying "If you can't say something nice than don't say anything at all..." Words to live by!

Once again: Well done Tudor Arms and keep up the great work for next 40 years

Fully agree with your first paragraph, it really gets my goat up to listen to Brits knocking Sweden, especicially this fabulous city of Stockholm.

However as far as your second paragraph is concerned, we are chock ablock every weekday lunchtime, with most of our daily specials running out by 2pm. Our dining room is always heavily booked in advance, and you have to be pretty lucky to get a table if you just walk in after 6pm. So, what am I saying, you are definately in a minority, I´m very sad to sad.

If anyone fancies popping into the Harcourt Arms, just off Crawford St in London, then you'll hear the Swedish ex pat community gathered there regularly moaning about England. About the pipes on the outside of houses, how people don't take their shoes off when they enter houses, about how people use indicators on their cars...
11:32 April 28, 2010 by LiquidSnake
I agree with waybackwhen. The price there, from looking at that sign, is ridiculous. But pardon me for saying, Sweden in general seems quite an expensive country...

I visit Sweden because I like Sweden. I think English pubs and English shops should, for the most part, be kept in England. We're only a two our plane journey away. =X

"About the pipes on the outside of houses, how people don't take their shoes off when they enter houses, about how people use indicators on their cars..."

All of which arguments are ridiculous. Of course we take shoes off when we enter houses, it just depends on the person. Also, of course people should use indicators. Not only is it a law, but it's also much safer for other drivers and pedestrians.

Congrats Tudor Arms! This is a place to be and the atmosphere is varm, fun and it's a good place to relax. So Thank you to all of the staff. If i had more time on my hands i had been there more often and the quiz and QM John is a very popular event. All of this people give Tudor Arms its distinctive charm!!

peropaco: I have been going to Tudor for almost 8 years now and i have never seen any "cosmopolitan and fancy umbrella drinks"
13:19 April 28, 2010 by Åskar
I used to work not too far from Tudor and every now and then a couple of colleagues and I walked over to have lunch. It wasn't our closest lunch restaurant but it was the best by far. The last time I had something to eat there must have been half a year ago or so and the grub was still excellent.

This all reminds me that I must get a team together and go to a quiz night again.

Keep up the good work!

Anybody read aftonbladet today.

" Truth is that Tudor Arms is quite a mediocre place, even if a happy place, not a massive selection of beers, the food is not gourmet, the interior could do with a facelift...... BUT the atmosphere is a very warm one, the regulars part of the family, the Tudor is, for better or worse, real. That´s why they have triumphed over the competitors with their sparklingly clean interiors, their massive selection of hand pulled real ale, their menus shouting of exquisite dishes. Who wants all that luxury when you just want a pint and a chat? "
20:15 April 28, 2010 by Greg in Canada
"I think English pubs and English shops should, for the most part, be kept in England."

Any immigrant from the UK I've ever talked to always says the one thing most missed from over 'ome is the pub. After living in the UK for two years I have to agree. The pub is one British institution that SHOULD be imported to the rest of the world.
22:03 April 28, 2010 by wxman
You really have to love these BS awards. "...Over 600 British establishments worldwide." If they didn't go to every pub in the world, this is invalid. The award should say, "Voted best of the 600 we surveyed".
00:07 April 29, 2010 by texasgubbar
For drinking I prefer The Bishops Finger. No TV's to bother your conversation.
02:09 April 29, 2010 by chrissywhissy
wxman,

Just to put you right, this was not the result of "best of the 600 we surveyed" but best of 600 that were nominated by expats worldwide. ie those who care..

and to you, texasgubbar,

I thought Bishops Finger was a bottle of beer. Can´t get a TV in one of those..

They are probably happy to be without you, I´m sure there are plenty of other dumps which would appreciate your custom, if you can find them.....

Which picture were you looking at, obviously the wrong one. You have got hundreds to choose from if you visit their colourful, but ridiculously juvenile home-page....

Been there once many years ago, remember being it rather small. A very good head of Guinness though.
16:34 May 2, 2010 by viejose
I haven't been there yet, so for what I read I shouldn't go...guys calm down, a pub is a pub, a bar is a bar, an sports bar is an sports bar, a cantina is a cantina, and so for and so on. They have their own place in the world, personally I can't compare a bar from Mexico, for example Playa del Carmen with a Mexican bar in Stockholm or somewhere else not even in Los Angeles, CA, same with a bar in Madrid, or any sport bar in USA so if you like the place enjoy if you don't like it don't go, not make more out of what it is; my point is the local belongs where it started in the corner of the old neighborhood, and if some melancholic mate wants to open a similar establishment to have a piece of home foe people to enjoy, let it bee. Congrats to the Pub, Bar, Cantina or whatever you want to call it, and I am looking forward to stop by and have a drink or 2. Cheers.
